Isn’t She Lovely

Posted in environment, reduce/reuse/recycle by jen | Tags: , , ,

One of my bestest friends and also biz partner in the green grown and sexy game, Thuy, is a trailblazer when it comes to all things green. Not only did she hip me to the benefits of reusable bags, recycling, composting (ok, neither one of us has messed with that worminess yet) but she’s been holding down the SIGG bottle for a hot minute now.

SIGG bottles are manufactured in Switzerland in an eco-friendly environment and are a safe and non-toxic alternative to traditional plastic water bottles. Many plastic bottles are made of polycarbonate #7 and leach harmful chemicals into the containers ingredients. Due to a special internal coating, SIGG bottles exceed FDA standards and ensure 0% leaching.

So here’s the deal. Get a water purifier for your tap at home, fill up your SIGG bottle and you’re ready to roll. Not only will you save money on purchasing countless plastic bottles of water, but you eliminate the plastic waste and nasty chemicals lurking in your supposedly pure water from some remote spring in Fiji.

Reverse Graffiti Project

Posted in art by thuy | Tags: , , , ,

Artist Paul Curtis teamed up with Clorox Green Works to spread a message known as the Reverse Graffiti Project. The team goes into urban areas and creates murals with the use of stencils and Green Works plant-based cleaners. The canvas: dirty walls. The world is a dirty, dirty place indeed.

When I hear Clorox, the first thing I think of is toxic bleach but their Green Works line claims that each product contains over 99% natural ingredients that are biodegradable, recyclable packaging & not being tested on animals. Definitely a step in the right direction.

Organic Alcohol Known To Make You Missbehave?

Posted in Peeps We Rep, food/drink, girls we heart by thuy | Tags: , , , ,

A mag we heart , Missbehave, did a post about this story that Sean Evans of the New York Daily News wrote comparing his hangovers when drinking organic vs traditional alcohol. Inquiring minds want to know, are the hangovers the same? We have tried both versions and frankly after a night of debauchery on the good stuff, we still feel like crap, we still eat a bunch of carbs and we are still totally useless non-functioning members of society the next day. What we can answer for the Missbehave ladies is what’s availble as far as organic jesus juice is concerned.

Damn, all this writing has made me thirsty. Excuse me while I go pop in my Snoop D-O-Double G cd and make myself an organic gin & juice. Laid back.

Sing It To Me Teddy

Posted in green tips by thuy

Green Tip: Turn off the lights. I hear that song in my head every time I catch myself walking out of a room and forgetting to flip the switch. If you’re at home and going to leave a room for more than 5 minutes, turn it off. On your way out of a public restroon, shut it down. Last to leave work or at a friends or family members that forgets to or chooses not to? You know what to do. I’m sure the only instance I don’t have to give you this tip is when you’re in between the sheets.

Could you smoke 3 packs of cigarettes a day?

Posted in Logistics, environment, film/tv/print by thuy | Tags: , , , , , ,

Well that’s what the air quality is compared to for those living in Linfen, China, also known as one of the world’s most polluted cities in the world. Even though Linfen is nowhere near the Olympics in Beijing, I can see why China has put so much effort in trying to clean up their air quality for the past three years.

My friend Greg turned me onto this site, VBS.tv, a web-based channel created by the peeps of Vice magazine. Yea, that’s what I thought- Vice, covering environmental issues? Their amateur reporters brave the streets in various states and countries to save us from the crap on television and bring us actual, non-biased news.

I’m loving the series called Toxic, which shows us the ugly side of pollution, deforestation, and oil, to name a few. One to definitely watch is the 12 episodes about the floating toxic plastic island, twice the size of Texas, known as the Pacific Garbage Island.

Sucks To Be The Stylist That Did This Shoot

Posted in animal cruelty, animal rights, fashion by thuy | Tags: , , , , ,

Being a wardrobe stylist myself, I have to admit that I’ve had a few nightmares of showing up for a shoot and having some diva celebrity or a high maintenance producer not liking anything I’ve brought, even though there’s like 3 rolling racks of clothes to choose from. I’m knocking on sustainable, harvested wood as I type this. I’ve yet to have a nightmare of pissing a designer off though, up until now.

Stella McCartney was furious when she found out that lingerie from her line was loaned out to a stylist and used in an advert for a fur company. The ad features a model sporting a SM bra and draped in a $12,000.00 mink coat. It is well known, especially in the fashion world, that Stella is an animal/Peta activist, as well as being strongly against using fur or leather in her clothing line.

Hockley, a London boutique renowned for stocking the world’s best nastiest fur designers, has apologised for the mistake. A spokesman for the company said: ‘Hockley is aware of Stella McCartney’s views and is respectful of them. This was an unfortunate mistake and Hockley would not intentionally make anyone feel uncomfortable.

‘Hockley both requested and was told that the item was a vintage piece and apologizes for any embarrassment caused to Stella McCartney. It is not Hockley’s intention to use the image again.’

A little late now since it’s already in print in the current Vogue. Would you pay $12,000.00 to support this cruel and horrific industry? Let’s all say a lil’ prayer for the stylist before we go to bed tonight.

Method To The Madness

Posted in environment, health, reduce/reuse/recycle, reusable, shopping, sustainability by thuy | Tags: , , , , , ,

I’m finally coming close to using up the last of my toxic cleaning supplies. I was so excited to go to Target and stock up on the good stuff from Method. Not only is their packaging appealing, it’s also made from recycled materials. Once you’ve come to the end of your supply, you can toss it into the recycle bin because the containers and boxes are biodegradable or recyclable. Now that’s the true meaning of “cradle to cradle.” Extra brownie points for not testing on animals.

The bathroom and kitchen cleaners smell delish. I picked up 2 fabric cloths for cleaning wood and windows- no more using paper towels! And for everyone out there that owns a Swifter, you would be smart to switch over to Method’s, which offers a washable, reusable cleaning cloth, as opposed to those one time use, disposable versions. Thanks to the people against dirty, I can now clean my crib with a clear conscious.

Peep the blue fabric bag under the products in the picture. It’s my reusable bag from Bed Bath & Beyond. It’s gigantic and the perfect size for Target shopping.

That’s Not A Pink Elephant

Posted in animal cruelty, animal rights, film/tv/print, music by thuy | Tags: , , , , , , , ,

Here’s a promo that Britney shot with Russell Brand for the MTV VMA’s. I guess the concept is supposed to be “there’s an elephant in the room?” That’s the best they could do? An unnecessary use of an animal for human entertainment, and all for the sake of promoting a music award show and this train wreck? She may be looking better these days but I think she needs to work on loosening up her weave and putting down the Starbucks Frappuccino’s. Something still isn’t right in the head.

The Olympics Get Some Heat

Posted in animal cruelty, animal rights by thuy | Tags: , , , , , , ,

We don’t agree with Peta’s hardcore tactics, but we do like seeing the celebs they get to pose in their birthday suits for animal rights. Their latest campaign features Olympic gold medalist, Amanda Beard, in protest of the fur industry in China.

I’ve seen footage of fur farms in China and it’s one of the most disgusting and heartless acts I’ve ever witnessed. Animals are bred and raised in tiny cages for all of their short lives, living in atrocious conditions with little food and shelter. When it’s their time to become a coat (cough, Aretha Franklin) or a bag (ahem, Mary Kate Olsen), they are usually bludgeoned or strangled, then hung by their feet and stripped of their skin. The most horrific part is that most of the time, the animals are still alive and struggling while getting their skin cut from one end of their body and peeled off, all in one piece. Skinned alive- literally!

Can you freaking imagine how that must feel? Think Silence Of The Lambs- but picture that ish happening to you while being alive and conscious! Hats off to Peta for bringing the awareness to China during the Olympics. Seriously people, fur is for the birds..and foxes, dogs, cats, rabbits, seals, coyotes, and chinchillas. Click on the thumbnails below to see others that have bared it all for Peta in the past.

Jet Blue Is Doing It Too

Posted in Logistics, everybody's doing it by thuy | Tags: , , , , ,

No longer will you be able to request a blankie and a pillow on Jet Blue. Not for free anyway. Thanks to the effed up economy and the rising costs of fuel, the airline will no longer stock recycled pillows and blankets. Instead they will offer an eco-friendly option for $7, on flights longer than two hours.

The carrier claims the pillow and blanket feature a fabric technology, developed by CleanBrands LLC, that blocks pesky critters like dust mites, mold spores, pollen and pet dander.

Sweet dreams and enjoy your ride in the friendly skies.

LA Will Ban Plastic Bags- FINALLY

Posted in environment, everybody's doing it, reduce/reuse/recycle, reusable, shopping by thuy | Tags: , , , , , ,

The City Council voted to ban plastic bags from stores, beginning July 1, 2010. Shoppers will be given the choice of bringing in their own or pay a 25-cent fee for paper or biodegradable bags. It is estimated that LA consumers use 2.3 billion bags every year. Only an estimated 5% of plastic bags are recycled statewide, according to the city’s Bureau of Sanitation.

The ban was proposed by Councilman Ed Reyes, who called plastic bags “the graffiti of the L.A. River,” which passes through his district. The Los Angeles council also voted to end official city purchases of polystyrene containers (styrofoam) for takeaway food, beginning next year.

Might as well start with getting your practice on now. It took us months to get into the habit of bringing the bags out of our trunks and into the stores with us. Once you’ve done your shopping and get to the cashier, the last thing you want to do, whether it be out of laziness or being in a rush, is leave your cart and walk back out to get them. After a while, it will become second nature, going against the phrase, “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.”

Everybody’s Doing It

Posted in celeb, charitable causes, environment, everybody's doing it by jen | Tags: , , , , ,

I’m definitely taking this charitable display of philanthropy on Naomi Campbell’s part, with a grain of salt. For all of her arrests, blackberry throwing drama, housekeeper abuse, not to mention a love of fur, I’m not sure if I should be giving her props or putting her on blast. Nonetheless, everybody deserves the opportunity to turn over a new leaf.

Naomi is pictured above planting to help raise awareness of environmental issues in Nigeria. A tree will be planted for every new baby born in the region’s hospitals in an effort to draw attention to the importance of environmental activism.

South Los Angeles Put On A Diet

Posted in food/drink, health by thuy | Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to place a one year moratorium on fast food restaurants in South Los Angeles. If approved by the full council and signed by the mayor, the law would prevent fast-food chains from opening new restaurants in a 32-square-mile area. The hope is that within that year, the city will attract establishments that will offer healthier choices, sit down dining, organic food, etc.

Thirty percent of adults in South Los Angeles area are obese, compared to 19.1 percent for the metropolitan area and 14.1 percent for the affluent Westside, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. “Cheap, unhealthy food and lack of access to healthy food is a recipe for obesity,” Brownell said. “Diets improve when healthy food establishments enter these neighborhoods.” A report by the Community Health Councils found 73 percent of South Los Angeles restaurants were fast food, compared to 42 percent in West Los Angeles.

Raymond Roker also touched on the subject in his entry for the Huffington Post. Check out his take on “Black in America on CNN: Are We There Yet?”
