Los Angeles Gets CONNECTED

Our girl Sarah Shewey of Pink Cloud Events really did her thug thizzle this past weekend at the Abbot Kinney festival. Her execution of the green lifestyle area, CONNECTED, was a smashing success.

The festivities kicked off on Saturday night with a VIP lounge for media and sponsors of the event. The real party started on Sunday, where over 100 thousand people made their way to the festival to enjoy a day of music, food, shopping and entertainment.

GG&S was honored to be a media sponsor for CONNECTED, and we were excited to see so many people taking an interactive part in the lifestlye lounge. A good time was had by all!

Check out our girl Sarah Shewey’s blog at Pink Cloud Events, or peep her appearance on Alter Eco, or contact her for more socially conscious event planning here.

Thanks for letting us be a part of such a succcesful and meaningful movement!

Google Transit

Posted in auto/transportation by jen | Tags: , ,

On Sept, 23rd, 2008, Google Transit launched a feature which makes it easier for New Yorkers and visitors to the city, to plan trips and locate destinations on one of the largest transit systems in the United States.

Google Transit incorporates the cities subway stops, bus routes and commuter trains to outlying areas with its map features including street views. Simply type in your departure point and your destination and voilà, everything you need is at your fingertips.

No more guessing if the train you hopped on is going to drop you off in Williamsburg instead of the West Village. There’s also a feature called “Google Translate” so the tool can be used for the city’s non-English speaking tourists, visitors or immigrants.

Go Veggie

Founded in 1977, and taking place on October 1st, World Vegetarian Day, was created to promote the “joy, compassion and life-enhancing possibilities of vegetarianism”. It is a day for meat eaters to give meatless dining selections a try and for vegetarians to celebrate being a “veggie”.

Encourage your friends to give it a try for a day, or even a month (October also marks Vegetarian Awareness Month).

Gossip Girls And Great Food

Posted in food/drink by jen | Tags: , , , ,

Had a girls night and watched back to back episodes of Gossip Girls and Entourage (trashy, I know) and enjoyed an amazing locally grown, organic meal prepared by executive chef, Melissa Bowers (ok, she’s actually just my homegirl but she’s a maestro in the kitchen).

Arugula and parmesan salad, cherry tomatoes with bocconcini, fennel and endive salad, sauteed kale and organic farm-raised chicken with rosemary stuffed with baby potatoes (being a veggie, I passed on the chicken, but the girls seemed to enjoy it). It felt great to have a home cooked meal after a steady diet of Magnolia Bakery cupcakes.

VegPorn is not your average YouPorn. The site was started by..um…hold on…wait for it….Furry Girl and has been around since 2003. Damn, how have I been going on without this site for the past 5 years? I kid, I kid.

They don’t care about size or shape and all of their models are vegans or vegetarians. You can join for the low price of $12 a month, although I don’t think I would, even if it were $FREE.99. Be prepared to see lots of trees as backdrops and bushy, unshaved yes yes holes straight from the 70′s. Herbivores delight! Or as they lightly put it, “Eat Pussy, Not Pork.”

Warning- if you happen to be at your desk right now, I highly suggest you look over both shoulders before checking out the two links above. They are VERY NSFW.

Walmart To Reduce Plastic Bags

Posted in environment, reusable, shopping by jen | Tags: , , ,

The last time I was in a Walmart was to pick up a couple copies of the Leonardo Dicaprio narrated DVD, The 11th Hour. Having grown up in Canada, Walmart stores are a dime a dozen, while they are few and far between in Los Angeles.

All that aside, Walmart is looking to eliminate 9 million plastic shopping bags per year by the year 2013. Walmart will team up with the Environmental Defense Fund (EFD) to develop strategies to reduce, reuse and recycle an average of one-third of their plastic bags from 2008 levels. This will result in the elimination of an estimated 290,000 tonnes of carbon emissions and energy consumption equal to 678,000 barrels of oil.

Green Your Baby

Posted in baby/child, health by thuy | Tags: , , , , , , , ,

Two of my dear friends welcomed a baby boy into the world last week. The proud new parents have been eco-conscious way before it was “cool to be green,” so it came as no surprise when I checked their registry online and saw that they listed plenty of eco-conscious baby products.

I was excited that the Born Free glass bottles were still available. They are BPA, Phthalate and PVC free. If I were a parent, I would take the extra precaution and buy these bottles instead.

The FDA won’t admit that the chemicals found in conventional plastic bottles may be dangerous to a child’s health. Remember, Phthalates are believed to make boys have smaller wee-wee’s, among a long list of other things. You wouldn’t want to do that to your future son would you?

I also picked up an organic cotton swaddler, or as some of me and my friends like to call it, an eggroll or burrito wrapper. I got a few other items but I didn’t gift wrap any of them. Why? Because it’s a waste of paper that’s going to be ripped off and thrown away. Instead I bought a 100% recyclable gift bag from Babies R Us, threw the items in and called it a day.

Congrats to Ivana, Greg and earth friendly baby Luka.

Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey Breast Milk Flavor?

Posted in animal cruelty, animal rights, food/drink by jen | Tags: , , ,

PETA has sent a letter to ice cream purveyors, Ben & Jerry’s, urging them to end the needless suffering of dairy cows and their calves, by using human breast milk in their ice cream instead of cow’s milk. This request comes on the heels of a Swiss restaurateur’s decision to substitute breast milk from lactating mothers for 75% of the cow’s milk used in the dishes he serves.

Cherry Garcia à la breast milk anyone??

(If it’s any consolation Ben & Jerry’s now makes organic ice cream. Check out the new flavors here.)

Celebs 4 Whatever It Takes

My New York eco-friendly shopping saga continues. I stopped in at Urban Outfitters looking for a black pleather skirt that I had seen online. No luck with the skirt but walked out with 2 reusable tote bags (it’s becoming an addiction), designed by various celebrities for WhateverItTakes.org

Kanye West, Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney and Gwen Stefani were among the celebs who lent their designs for the cause.

When you purchase a bag ($38) you are helping the 21st Century Leaders Foundation a charitable organization which funds key global development causes, including poverty alleviation, environmental conservation and the protection of children.

Net royalty proceeds generated by the Whatever It Takes Campaign go to the 21st Century Leaders Foundation, to fund selected charitable projects including those nominated by the celebrity artist.

I copped the bags designed by Kanye and Stella to add to my growing collection. Get out and cop yours!

Because Finding A Trash Can Is So Hard

Posted in environment, events, reduce/reuse/recycle by thuy | Tags: , , , ,

This past weekend I participated in Coastal Cleanup Day, but instead of the beach, I opted to go to the Culver City Creek. Once I did a mapquest, it was either 60 miles roundtrip to Zuma or 12 miles RT to Culver City and with gas prices nowadays….

When I first arrived along the walkway, I didn’t see any trash whatsoever. I kept my eyes peeled for cigarette butts, plastic bottle caps, jack in the crack soft drink cups- nada. I finally looked over the embankment- BINGO.

During my clean up I saw a lot of styrofoam, plastic food coverings, bottle tops, plastic bags, cigarette butts, etc., the usual suspects of litter. The not so usual were window blinds, a broken plastic trash can, part of a bicycle, fishing rods, kids plastic toys and so on.

Unless your throwaway item happens to be dripping in shit, puke or maggots, you should be holding on to it until you find a trash can or get home. Littering is lame and recycling is key.

Get Yo’ Bump N Grind On With Yes

Posted in animal rights, health, reduce/reuse/recycle, sexy ting tings by thuy | Tags: , , , , , ,

It’s companies like Yes and Rent A Green Box that get my organic cotton panties wet. Yes is a natural lubricant that is made from organic ingredients, which means it is completely free of parabens, glycerin, hormones, silicones and petroleum products.

Remember, ladies you’re putting this stuff in your honey pot and guys, your love stick is going to be swimming in it, so you may want to go the natural way.

The company is also against testing on animals. Did you know that KY tests their warming liquids by rubbing it on rabbits vaginas and penises? Poor rabbits!

Yes recognizes that global warming is real and they are committed to the 3 R’s in their business practice. They reduce packaging and their energy use. What they can’t reduce, they reuse, and the rest gets recycled. They adhere to a sustainable wood policy and make donations that support a climate change initiative. And of course, all of their packaging and containers are recyclable.

And since YES is the name of one of my favorite dances, I leave you with this video by comedian and dancer, Robert Hoffman. Seriously, get your earphones on if you’re at work, it’s kinda NSFWish and press play, over and over and over again.

“Oh-oh, look at Kiki, she caught the YES. Alright, slow down bitch, that’s enough. Kiki stop, you’re YESING too hard!”

Next Sunday, the 24th annual Abbot Kinney Festival rolls into Venice, CA. Abbot Kinney Blvd. will be closed to traffic from Main St. to Venice Blvd to accommodate the festivities. There will be 3 stages of live music, dancers and performance artists, a spectacular Family Courtyard, Traditional festival and ethnic foods, a Beer Garden, a Green Living Area and over 300 vendors featuring original handcrafted goods.

Pink Cloud Events has been commisoned to curate and produce a young and engaging green lifestlyle area called CONNECTED.

The “CONNECTED” concept focuses on the motivation for living a green lifestyle: to be connected to your community, your environment, your future and your self.

The Green Living Area will feature a multitude of delicious healthy food and beverage options, a bike valet, eco-art workshops, environmentally focused tours of the surrounding neighborhood, and a community music piece.

The goal for this year is to be a zero waste event. They are encouraging recycling and will not be allowing vendors to use plastic bags or Styrofoam, so bring your fashionable reusable totebags. In the “Green Living Area” there will be environmentally conscious vendors and non-profits, interactive events, workshops and innovative ideas on Green living. They’re asking everyone to bike to the event (there will be a bike valet), or take public transportation.

If you care about the environment and want to connect with others that do as well, you won’t want to miss this event. We’ll be there throughout the day so be sure to come visit us in the Green Lifestyle Area, which is located on Milwood Avenue, next to the G2 environmental art gallery.

Coastal Cleanup Day 09.20.08

Posted in environment, events by thuy | Tags: , , ,

Last year I attended my first California Coastal Cleanup Day. It’s not an event I would have normally volunteered my services to. I remember noticing it was on a Saturday morning and thinking to myself, there’s no way I can do that, I’ll be too busy nursing my hangover about that time in the morning.

Well when the day before the event finally came up, I got some crazy hair up my arse and decided to cancel my plans for that night, get to bed early and head out to the beach the next morning to clean up litter off the beach. I’m glad I did it and I’m looking forward to being a part of it again this year.

Every state with a coastline participates, including the Great Lakes states, and even some inland states clean river and lake shores. The one-day cleanup is international—at last count, over 60 nations participated—and may be the largest volunteer day on the planet.

Heal The Bay brings out over 10,000 volunteers to cleanup sites each year in L.A. County to over 50 sites along Santa Monica Bay and along inland creeks and waterways. Go to their site to find a location near you.

I’ll probably pick Zuma Beach again. Holla at me if any of you are planning on going.

Carrotmob Makes It Rain from carrotmob on Vimeo.

Carrotmob organizes consumers to make purchases that give financial rewards to those businesses who agree to make socially beneficial choices.

In this viral campaign, they choose a liquor store in the Mission District of San Francisco that agrees to put aside 22% of its profit for environmentally friendly improvements, if CM gets shoppers to come in on one day to make purchases that exceeds its normal daily sales.

K&D market brings in between $1800-$2000 a day on average, $3000 on a really good weekend day. On the day of the event, they made over $9000 in less than 3 hours, which allowed them to redo their lighting system to be energy efficient as well as get new gaskets in their refrigerators.

You big corporations better watch out. There’s a new crew in town and they’re about to bust some carrot caps in yo’ asses.

High-Rolling Chihuahuas

I need to offset the the depressing post below. I’ve never been a big chihuahua lover, but these ones melted my heart. The pups were born with a congenital defect that left them without front legs. They were rescued from a puppy mill by the North Shore Animal League in Port Washington, NY on Long Island, which is the world’s largest no-kill pet adoption center and is home to many special needs pets.

Donors contributed 1k for custom aluminum-frame scooters for the pups in January. Before that, the dogs were able to hop and walk on their hind legs. They have since been adopted by Donna Imhof who works as a veterinary technician at North Shore. Truly amazing.

What Would You Title This Post?

Posted in animal cruelty, animal rights, food/drink, health by thuy | Tags: , , , , , ,

I can’t even put into words what this story made me feel. Although I don’t agree with some of Peta’s tactics of getting their messages across, I am always grateful for their undercover videos of animal abuse.

I can’t refrain or apologize for putting these type of pictures or videos (click it, I double dog dare ya) on this blog. Ever. I’m sure these are not the images anyone wants to see while having their morning coffee and breakfast, especially if it consists of bacon, but I feel the need to spread the word to those that want to know what’s really going down in the green pastures slaughterhouses of America.

In this undercover video, workers on a hog feedlot are seen slamming baby pigs onto a cement floor, shocking them with cattle prods, beating them with metal poles and shoving poles into the anuses and vaginas of the animals.

The feedlot is located in Bayard, Iowa and provides meat to Hormel Foods, the maker of SPAM. After earlier Humane Society videos documented cattle abuse at feedlots, Hormel said none of its suppliers abused animals.

PETA will turn its videos over to the Green County Sheriff’s Department and demand the arrest of 18 workers. PETA says the following abuses were witnessed by its investigators:

  • A supervisor shoved a cane into a sow’s vagina, struck her on the back about 17 times, and then struck another sow.
  • Multiple pigs were beaten with metal gate rods, and lacerations were found on more than 30 sows – which is probably evidence of more abuse.
  • A worker hit a young pig in the face four times with the edge of a herding board, and investigators witnessed dozens of similar incidents involving this worker and 11 other workers.
  • Two men – including a supervisor – were witnessed jabbing clothespins into pigs’ eyes and faces. A supervisor also poked two animals in the eyes with his fingers.

And this my dear friends, is one of the biggest reasons why I gave up meat on January 2nd, 2008. I can’t understand this type of cruel and perverted behavior. WTF compels human beings to do this to animals?

The thumbnails below are of:

  • A pig that had blue toxic paint sprayed into it’s snout and eyes as she nursed her piglets.
  • Piglets that were slammed into the ground to be killed but are still alive, suffering til their death.
  • Tails and testacles that were cut without any anesthetic.
  • A pig forced to farrow in a cage just large enough to allow the sow to lie on her side.

Volt Revealed

Posted in auto/transportation by thuy | Tags: , ,

The long awaited Chevy Volt made it’s debut in Detroit yesterday. It is engineered to run purely off an electric motor for up to 40 miles on a single charge from a home outlet. After that a four-cylinder gasoline engine kicks in to charge the battery. The car would get more than 50 mpg if the driver drains the battery and uses a tank of gas. But the company says most drivers commute less than 40 miles a day, so they’ll rarely use gasoline.

Posted in Peeps We Rep, environment, events, green tips by thuy | Tags: , , , , ,

WIth this whole shift in green thinking, have you ever had a light bulb go off in your head on how to help the environment? If so, our good friends over at the XPrize Foundation want to hear from you.

Your first step should be to watch their introductory video, to get an idea of what they’re looking for. Next, you’ll need to make a two minute video with your crazy green idea on energy and the environment and submit it here. Entries must be made by October 31st, 2008. Simple as that.

Be sure that your video answers the following questions:
1. What is the Grand Challenge or world-wide problem that you are trying to solve?
2. What is the specific prize idea (goal, rules, judging criteria)?
3. How will this prize lead to benefits for humanity?

Oh and btw, there’s a $25,000 grand prize.

Yup, you better be scurrying on over to your webcam right now. Two minutes, one slamming crazy idea to help mother earth and 25 G’s. Need I say more? Get your thinking caps on GG&S readers! Check out the video submissions they have so far and get in where you fit in.
