5-0 Going Green?
Posted in auto/transportation by thuy | Tags: carbon motors, cop car, greenStart studying these pics now. This Robocop looking thing may soon be the look of cop cars in the future.
The carbon E7 is a 300-horsepower bio-diesel-fueled bad-guy chaser that has “integrated external and internal surveillance capabilities, radar, LoJack, an automatic license plate recognition system, radiation and biological threat detectors and 360 degree, high visibility and built-in LED emergency lighting.
Instead of a 4.6-liter Ford V8 engine underhood, the E7 will feature a clean-diesel engine capable of running on biodiesel. This model will be faster and “greener” than the standard Crown Victoria model and although I love anything that is green, I hope to never see the inside of one of these.

Don’t Forget The Tofurkey!
Posted in animal cruelty, animal rights, food/drink by jen | Tags: atkins diet, master cleanse, south beach diet, thanksgiving, tofurkeySo the day we’ve all been waiting for is finally upon us. An excuse to kick our low-carb, Atkins, South Beach or Master Cleanse diet to the curb for a day and carb out on mac & cheese, creamy mashed potatoes, candied yams and veggie stuffing.
Personally I’m good on chowing down on just the sides but for the rest of you who can’t resist tearing into a turkey, how about showing a little compassion this year and dig into a mouthwatering, tender, juicy Tofurkey. Ok, so maybe the picture above isn’t really doing it justice but don’t knock it ’till you try it.

From Clueless To Kind
Posted in animal rights, celeb, girls we heart, health by jen | Tags: alicia silverstone, batgirl, batman and robin, clueless, fatgirl, kind diet, veganYour favorite Clueless girl and long-time vegan is set to write a tell-all book…. No, not about her wild-child party days, followed by a stint in rehab, more partying then a relapse, back to rehab.. rinse and repeat.
Alicia Silverstone is actually one of the few Hollywood girls who hasn’t gone that route. On the contrary she has been a strict vegan for years and hardcore animal activist. She’s also very publicly battled the bulge and was even referred to as “Fatgirl” instead of “Batgirl” in the Batman and Robin movie.
So it only makes sense that she would pen a book on vegan dieting.
The book entitled The Kind Diet is set to release in Fall 2009 and “explores the connection between what we put in our bodies and what we’re doing to the planet, and how choosing the right foods in the kitchen can help you feeling lighter, sexier, and more alive.”
The book will also include a 3-step diet program, along with 75 vegan and macrobiotic recipes.

Paperless Business Cards
Posted in food/drink, office by thuy | Tags: business cards, laser print, peanutsA Japanese company named Arigatou is using high grade CO2 laser engraving technology to print logos, names and telephone numbers on organic materials like beans, rice and peanuts.
These “Taberu Me” cards cost a bit more than regular cards, a set of 150 costs 5,800 yen (around $50). “Taberu” means “eat” and “Me” could either be “business card” in Japanese or “me” in English.
So depending on how you would like to interpret it you could end up saying, “Nice meeting you, here is my card, eat me!”

Kate Moss, are you listening?? Tony Montana, are you in the hizzle??
It was recently revealed that four square metres of rainforest are destroyed for every gram of cocaine snorted in the UK.
Francisco Santos Calderón, the vice-president of Colombia said 300,000 hectares of rainforest were destroyed each year in Colombia to clear land for coca plant cultivation, predominantly controlled by illegal groups, including the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, known as Farc.
Santos said many middle-class Britons who used cocaine were unaware of its environmental impact. “For somebody who drives a hybrid, who recycles, who is worried about global warming – to tell him that that night of partying will destroy 4m square of rainforest might lead him to make another decision.”

Gwyneth Effs Up
Posted in animal cruelty, animal rights, celeb by jen | Tags: fur, gwyneth paltrow, peta, tod'sGwyneth Paltrow had a lot of explaining to do after becoming the face of the Tod’s campaign. She was photographed with a fur stole draped over her shoulders for the lead shot of the campaign.
Her apology to PETA in part reads-
“It was a daylong photo shoot on a boat near Capri, and there were all sorts of poses with all kinds of clothes – none with fur,” she added. “During one set-up, a stylist came up from behind and draped a stole around my shoulder.
She continued: “I didn’t pay much attention to it, and when I noticed it was fur, I assumed it was fake fur, but did not ask, so it’s my fault. I was very surprised when they ended up using that one shot out of hundreds for the centerpiece of the Tod’s ads.
“I know it’s not a great excuse, but I hope you and your members understand.”
She also stated that she doesn’t wear fur at all and she and her family mostly eat a vegetarian diet.
Well… we’ll let it slip this time… but we’re watchin’ you Gwynnie.

Another Undercover Video Of Turkey Abuse
Posted in animal cruelty, animal rights, food/drink, health, news by thuyThis will be my first Thanksgiving sans turkey. Thinking about it, I’ve been kinda feeling sorry for myself. Envisioning my plate consisting of just the fixings, I thought, it’s not going to be the same without it. And to all my veggie friends, yes, I know about Tofurky, but ya’ll know I’m still not big on the whole fake meat thing just yet.
After watching this video I busted in on my own pity party and was reminded once again, exactly why I gave up meat in the beginning of the year.
LEWISBURG, W.Va. (AP) _ Global poultry grower Aviagen Inc. said Wednesday it has suspended a supervisor and would investigate a video released by an animal rights group that appears to show horrific abuse of turkeys at the company’s West Virginia farms.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said the video, which includes workers stomping on turkeys’ heads and twisting their necks to kill them, was shot by an undercover investigator who worked on the companies’ farms for more than two months.
Some wannabe smart lady of the National Turkey Federation in Washington, D.C., questioned the timing of PETA’s sting, saying that the turkey industry takes pride in the health and well being of its flocks and this was an isolated event. She said some other stuff but I’m too annoyed to type it all out. Just watch the video.
I want to ask Mrs. Fur-Trim Wearing Smartypants if she’s personally been to ALL of the thousands of farms across the U.S. on a daily basis to confirm her statement. Farm abuse happens all the time and there is no way to regulate it. I don’t care when or how the hell this video was shot. It shows us, the consumers, the truth. Thank you Peta! And back to her isolated comment, does that include the previous account of the Butterball factory farm getting busted for animal abuse too? Isolated my ass.
By all means, enjoy your turkey this year but please at least look into getting an organic, free-range turkey with no antibiotics, hormones or preservatives. You can pre-order them at Whole Foods.
Oh yea, duh *warning* the video has graphic content. You can thank the fine, educated, compassionate, hard working employees of the AVIAGEN farm for that.
If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be a vegetarian. ~Paul McCartney

Prisons Go Green & I’m On The Hunt For A New Penpal.
Posted in environment, everybody's doing it, reduce/reuse/recycle, solar by thuy | Tags: compost, prisons go green, reduce/reuse/recycleAs around-the-clock operations, prisons are voracious resource hogs, and administrators are under increasing pressure to reduce waste and conserve energy and water.
To keep costs down, the Indiana Department of Corrections installed water boilers that run on waste wood chips, and built a wind turbine at one prison that generates about 10 kilowatts an hour and saves $2,280 a year.
At Ironwood State Prison in Blythe, Calif., 6,200 solar panels send energy back to the grid, enough to power 4,100 homes a year. The prison was trying to meet an executive order requiring state agencies to reduce energy use by 20 percent by 2015, said a spokeswoman, Lt. Sue Smith.
Organic farming, recycling and solar in the prison system? Ok ma, forget about that nice dentist man I mentioned earlier. As Jody Watley would say: I’M LOOKING FOR A NEW LOVE.
Don’t worry, I won’t go for the Richard Ramirez type. Maybe one with just a misdemeanor offense. Heck, it doesn’t matter, as long as he can build me my dream apartment dweller compost bin or take care of my window plants that keep dying, it will be a match made in heaven.
But for now, inmate # 2478932, where ever you are, please write me soon with all your green credentials. Oh and pretty please decorate my envelope like the one below. Perhaps with a dope chola chic recycle symbol, sad clowns tree’s and graffiti hearts. I love prison art!
And what are you all looking at? Don’t tell me none of you don’t have any friends behind bars! No? Um..well lucky you. Thanks to computers, writing a good old fashion letter in cursive really sucks a big one nowadays.
Anyway, I guess I can go remove myself from inmateconnection.com and writeaprisoner.com. Hey, don’t judge!!!

Posted in environment, health, news, reduce/reuse/recycle, tech/gadgets by thuy | Tags: e-waste, pollution, recyclingIf you own any of those things mentioned above or any other type of electronic in your office or household, watch this video. So that means each and every one of you reading this right now should be pressing play.
Electronic waste is no joke. Most of the e-waste from the states is shipped illegally to Asia where labor workers (including women and children) disassemble the pieces for gold and metals. Field sized piles of monitors and scrap pieces are burned daily and the fumes from the chemicals that are released through the process are toxic, polluting the air, soil and eventually getting into the water stream.
Women that work in the field have the highest level of miscarriages and birth defects. Cancer is also a high probability. Much of the work is carried out by children, commonly using only rudimentary tools and with no protective equipment.
I’ve donated appliances to E-waste recycling events with the belief that they were not being shipped overseas and were being recycled safely here in the United States. I feel bamboozled. It’s sad and disturbing that people are capitalizing on the green movement.
Props to the 60 Minutes reporters for fighting back against the Chinese gangsta’s. Read what the accused recycling company (Executive Recycling) had to say about the allegations here.

Party people.
Organic beats provided by Dublab.
Opportunity Green held it’s two day conference at UCLA over the weekend and on Saturday night we got to be a part of the after party thrown by, none other than the event queen herself, Sarah Shewey of Pink Cloud Events.
There were yummy treats provided by some of our favorite eateries such as Leaf Cuisine, Tender Greens and Ciudad. Bevearges full of goodness were served by my friends new company, Barbelles. Hot chicks serving up canned heat is always a nice addition to any soiree. We loved the various stations that were set up for recycling and composting. No forks, plates, cups, or food bits went to waste. This was a party for the conscious.
Afterwards, a handful of peeps headed to Ecco in Hollywood, where they had a special table reserved for Ms. Shewey and her entourage. Environmentally friendly 360 vodka makes dirty dancing and innocent debauchery a lot more fun.
If you watch Planet Green’s Alter Eco show, keep your eye out for Sarah, she’s appeared in a few recent episodes.
