Extra, Extra, Read All About It!!

Posted in politickin' by jen | Tags: ,

Like most of you out there, Thuy and I were so caught up basking in Obama’s victory that we completely forgot to grab a copy of the L.A Times to commemorate the historical moment.

Thankfully we heard through the grapevine (Thanks Amy! Check her out at www.handbag-lab.com) that the Los Angeles Times office in downtown L.A was reprinting copies of the Nov. 5th, 2008 paper.

Thuy and I made a field trip out there and were amazed at the lineup snaking around the block.. you would’ve thought it was a streetwear store dropping the latest Jordans or ironic t-shirt.

Nope, just good old-fashioned paper and print.

It was amazing to see people of all ethnicities, race and gender snatching up bundles of newspapers. We even saw them being listed on ebay for $1800… (ummm, put down the crack pipe homie).

Anyways, we snagged a couple of extras so if you were one of those folks that got caught up in the moment and didn’t get a copy, holler at your girls… we’ll hook you up.

H&M Organics

Posted in fashion, reduce/reuse/recycle, shopping by jen | Tags: , ,

In an effort to be more eco-conscious H&M is aiming to increase the use of organic cotton by 50% in 2009 as compared to its useage in 2008.

You can always count on H&M for reasonably priced but well made interpretations of current runway trends. It’s my go-to spot if I’m in a clothing dilemma or on a budget.

I’m particularly a fan of the organic cotton line, not only for its environmentally friendly properties, but the cotton is super soft.

The Spring 2009 organic collection will include garments made from recycled materials such as PET bottles and textile remnants, wool from worn-out woolen garments and remnants of fabric, as well as recycled cotton which is recycled from fabric remnants in production.

Hallelujah For The Farm Animals

Posted in animal cruelty, animal rights, environment, food/drink, health, politickin' by thuy | Tags: , ,

It won’t exactly be like the picture above, but hopefully it will be better than those below.

We made our voices heard for the ones that do not have one. It’s simply wrong to confine veal calves, breeding pigs, and egg-laying hens in tiny cages barely larger than their bodies. Calves are tethered by the neck and can barely move, pigs in severe confinement bite the metal bars of their crates, and hens get trapped and even impaled in their wire cages. We wouldn’t force our pets to live in filthy, cramped cages for their whole lives, and we shouldn’t force farm animals to endure such misery. All animals, including those raised for food, deserve humane treatment.

This was needed for the animals and ourselves. Factory farms put our health at risk—cramming tens of thousands of animals into tiny cages, fostering the spread of diseases that may affect people. YES! on Prop 2 is better for animals—and for us.

The American Public Health Association called for a moratorium on new factory farms because of the devastating effects these operations can have on surrounding communities, spreading untreated waste on the ground and contaminating our waterways, lakes, groundwater, soil, and air. Prop 2 helps stop some of the worst abuses and protects our precious natural resources. That’s why California Clean Water Action and Sierra Club-California supported YES! on Prop 2.

GG&S x Pure/Roker Election Night

The boy we ♥. What now Raymond?

Michael Abbott and Timothy Linh Bui. Michael produced the Declare Yourself with Jessica Alba PSA campaign/spot, which prompted over 500,000 people to register to vote. Nice job! www.unitedfrontfilms.com

The most memorable shot of the evening. Raymond and his mom Darlene, watching Obama’s speech on the big screen.

The night that we had all been waiting for was finally upon us. We decided to have our own pre-election party at Raymond’s before heading out to the after party. The guests were arriving, the food was lined up, the drinks were flowing, and of course CNN was in the background. Just as it was about to get really good… snap-crackle-pop! The electricity went out. WTF? Apparently a transformer blew from the windy weather.

We rallied over to the Declare Yourself party at Zune Space. Words cannot explain the energy we felt the second we walked in the door or all the emotional outpour that came after hearing those words. “He did it. He’s the President.”

The end. But thankfully, it’s really a new beginning.

*Let the record show that Raymond is eating a 100% veggie hot dog in the picture below.

We now re-direct you to our normal broadcast system…green business as usual, but with a dose of political flavor.

Guayaki Organic Yerba Mate

Posted in environment, food/drink, health, reduce/reuse/recycle by thuy | Tags: , , ,

I recently met with my friend Angela who reps for Guayaki Yerba Mate and when I say reps-I mean she really holds it down for them to the fullest. I had yet to try the drink, but after receiving a case of the chilled bottles, a bag of the loose-leaf Yerba, the Yerba Mate tea bags and my very own gourd, I am hooked! And that’s just going off the taste. Once I got the break down on the mate leaf, the company and their practices, I was in awe and am now a devoted Guayaki fan.

Yerba mate is a beverage made from the leaves and stems of a powerful rainforest tree, native to the subtropical rainforests of Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina. It is consumed daily for optimum health, sustained energy and mental clarity. The leaves of the rainforest mate tree naturally contain 24 vitamins and minerals, 15 amino acids and abundant antioxidants. It is also organic, rain-forest grown, kosher and fairly traded.

Can they get any better? I couldn’t see how, but they do. They offset over 55 tons of their corporate CO2 footprint, locally. They build relationships with growers committed to sustainable forest production in Paraguay, Argentina, and Brazil. All their packaging is biodegradable. One of their principal sources for Guayakí Yerba Mate is the 12,500-acre Itabo Rainforest Preserve in Eastern Paraguay. In that Preserve, yerba mate has been replanted in its native habitat.

I could keep going, but seriously, I would have to break this up into a gazillion posts. Just go to their site, read what their about, fall in love and pick up one of their energy drinks in the chilled drink section of your local store or get yourself a gourd and enjoy the warm tea-like version.

Thanks for all the love Angela. Keep on keeping on with all the goodness that you do.

Gucci For Unicef

Posted in celeb, charitable causes, shopping by jen | Tags: , ,

For it’s 4th annual campaign to benefit Unicef, Gucci will be releasing a white version of its Tattoo Heart Collection.

25% of the sale will be donated to Unicef and its cause of children’s rights around the world. The bag will be available Nov. 19th, 2008- Jan. 31, 2009 in Gucci stores worldwide.

Rihanna will be featured in the ad campaign.

I’m not sure how much this piece of arm candy costs, but I’m sure it’s steep…. and although it’s for a good cause, I’ll be making my donation directly to the Unicef foundation.

Times are tough and the last thing I need is a new handbag (especially not a leather one).

McCain Hates Gooks

Posted in politickin' by thuy | Tags: ,

“I hate the gooks,” McCain said in response to a question from reporters aboard his campaign bus. “I will hate them as long as I live.” February 17, 2000.

McCain refused to apologize for that remark, but he did make the following statement the day after: “I was referring to my prison guards, and I will continue to refer to them in language that might offend some people because of the beating and torture of my friends. Gook, is the kindest appellation I can give.”

The word “gook” was first used in 1899 by American soldiers fighting Filipino insurgents. During the Korean War, the term was aimed at Koreans and Chinese. It was directed at the Vietnamese when Americans were fighting in Vietnam. It is now used as a slur toward any Asian or Pacific Islander.

It seems that the general public takes racism towards Asians lightly. What if McCain was a POW in Somalia, and he made that same statement but with the N-bomb instead? No one would take issue if he referred to “the bastards who tortured me”, but “gooks” inherently implies a whole class of people who had no hand in his torture.

If certain people treat you as badly as the captors treated McCain, you don’t call those evil people a word that is used in the US to pejoratively refer to the entire East Asian population. You don’t choose to call the Asians you like by their names and the asians you hate “gooks.” You don’t choose to call black people you like “black people” and the black captors who torture you the N-word. You especially don’t get to do that if you’re a public figure running for office. Being an honorable public servant and former POW doesn’t grant you carte blanche to be a racist.

Obamas Loss Traced To Thuy Nguyen?

Posted in politickin' by thuy

OH HELL NO!

Thats the message I received on my blackberry that almost made me crap my pants. Thanks Jeff for trying to pull a funny. You’ve given me more reason to make sure I get up bright and early on Tuesday morning to vote.

I definitely don’t want to be known as the “mother fucking cocksucking lazy fuck that couldn’t get out of bed in time to vote.”

Here are the rest of the phrases that will haunt me in my dreams tonight.

  • Non voter identified: Thuy Nguyen
  • Thuy= Loser
  • 10 Million strong against Thuy Nguyen
  • All Gods children welcome- except for Thuy Nguyen
  • I cannot believe Thuy would allow this to happen
  • Republicans praise Nguyen
Check it out and spread the word to others to prevent this. No one wants to be THIS nonvoter! See your name in lights here.

Please Vote YES On Prop 2

Posted in animal cruelty, animal rights, food/drink, health, politickin' by thuy | Tags:

What it would do: Require farmers to pen egg-laying hens, veal and pregnant pigs in ways that allow the animals to lie down, stand up, fully extend their limbs and turn around freely. Exceptions are made for the transportation of these animals, rodeos, fairs, 4-H programs, lawful slaughter, research and veterinary purposes.

What it would cost: The state legislative analyst’s office concluded that there is a potential that state and local tax revenue from farm businesses could decrease, possibly in the range of several million dollars a year. There is also a potential minor cost to enforce the law, which would partly be offset by increased fine revenue.

Who’s for it: U.S. Sens. Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein; Assembly members Loni Hancock (Berkeley) and Mark Leno (San Francisco); the city councils of Los Angeles, San Francisco, Berkeley and Davis; the Humane Society of the United States; Oakland Animal Services.

We Recycled On Halloween

Posted in events, everybody's doing it, fashion, reduce/reuse/recycle by thuy | Tags: ,

There used to be a time when I wouldn’t be caught dead in the same costume twice, but this year, I did things differently. I recycled two of my costumes from previous occasions and I must say, I’m pretty damn proud of myself for doing so. Props to all my friends for doing the same.

Thanks Raymond, for wearing that skirt and mad love to Mariqueen. You were the perfect Crazy 88 for GoGo.

Please click on the second thumbnail below for the full effect of that girls costume. Raymond was definitely enamored by her jungle of love.

Time to go nurse my well-deserved hangover. Pho anyone?
