You know this song is gonna be played all around the world tonight.

Don’t you miss hearing Don Cornelius and his deep voice every Saturday morning? What about the scramble board, lip-synched performances and the dance line? My girls always made me be the token asian girl with the ass length hair when we did our Soul Train sessions. Ahh the good ‘ol days.

Below is a pic of Cheryl Song in her hey day and in 2005. She finally trimmed that hair.

Recycle Them Trees

Posted in reduce/reuse/recycle by thuy | Tags: ,

It’s estimated that 30 million Christmas trees made it into our living rooms this year. I was relived to learn that for every tree that is cut down, three seedlings are planted the following year to replace it, making it the ultimate carbon offset.

Many counties have curbside services. Be sure to check out the Earth 911 site to see if your area recycles trees, if not, type in your zip code and it will provide you with the a recycling facility near you.

Bev. Hills Surgeon Uses Body Fat To Fuel Car

Posted in auto/transportation, beauty, health by thuy | Tags: , , ,

A Beverly Hills doctor is being investigated after patients filed complaints that he performed liposuction and extracted too much fat and left them disfigured. During the investigation it was founded that he was turning the fat he removed from patients into biodiesel that fueled his Ford SUV and his girlfriend’s Lincoln Navigator.

Fat, whether animal or vegetable, contains triglycerides that can be extracted and turned into diesel. Using fat to fuel cars might be environmentally friendly, but it’s definitely illegal in California to use human medical waste to power vehicles.

Would you be down to fuel your car with human fat if it were legal, safe and available?

Green Plastic. Cha-Ching!

Posted in environment, shopping by jen | Tags: , , ,

“Put it on the credit card and worry ’bout it later”. This approach to spending sounds like a reasonable way to deal with this damn recession ( well at least that’s what I tell myself).

That being said, it looks like the credit card companies are giving you an excuse to feel less guilty about putting the latest Marc Jacobs handbag or Christian Louboutin pumps on that lil’ piece of plastic.

Discover launched their biodegradable credit card “in response to greater consumer interest in green products, and they are hoping this will appeal to those interested in living a greener life.”

“The biodegradable Discover Card is another way for environmentally conscious consumers to do their part to help protect our planet.”

“The card itself is made of biodegradable PVC, which breaks down 99% in nine months to five years in soil, water, compost, or whatever microorganisms are present (e.g. landfills or composts). Plus, the card leaves no toxic effect on the environment.”

This seems like a good start, but I would have to agree with the the lovely ladies over at Ladies Lotto,”it can’t possibly be all that good for the environment when it encourages unnecessary consumerism.”

Ponder that for a minute cuz this is one of dem things that make you go “hmmmm.”

1000 New Species Discovered

Posted in environment by thuy | Tags: ,

Scientists have discovered more than 1,000 species in Southeast Asia’s Greater Mekong region in the past decade, including a spider as big as a dinner plate, the World Wildlife Fund said Monday.

A rat thought to have become extinct 11 million years ago and a cyanide-laced, shocking pink millipede were among creatures found in what the group called a “biological treasure trove”.

The species were all found in the rainforests and wetlands along the Mekong River, which flows through Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and the southern Chinese province of Yunnan.

Not all species were found hiding in remote jungles — the Laotian rock rat, which the study said was thought to be extinct about 11 million years ago, was first encountered by scientists in a local food market in 2005, it said.

One species of pit viper was first noted by scientists after it was found in the rafters of a restaurant at the headquarters of Thailand’s Khao Yai national park in 2001. The discoveries documented in the WWF report “First Contact” report for the Greater Mekong include 519 plants, 15 mammals, 89 frogs, 279 fish, 46 lizards, 22 snakes, 4 birds, 4 turtles and 2 salamanders.

With all the buzz about more animals coming close to extinction from global warming, this is good to hear.

Pharrell Goes Bionic

Posted in celeb, environment, shopping by jen | Tags: , ,

Ok… I don’t think Pharrell even needs to be promoting something eco-friendly for me to have mad love for his swagger, but him being on the green tip just adds to his ridiculous sex appeal.

Pharrell has teamed up with the folks over at Bionic Yarn, “a textile firm based in New York dedicated to developing environmentally sustainable fabrics. They engineer, market and manufacture premium yarns and fabrics using fibers comprised of recycled plastic bottles.

The fabrics then can be used to make backpacks, luggage, handbags, clothing items and home furnishings.” Look for Pharrell to be incorporating this eco-friendly material into his clothing labels.

Interesting fact- An average pair of jeans made of the bionic yarn fabric contains seven recycled plastic beverage bottles. If adopted by today’s clothing designers, this type of manufacturing could potentially reduce plastic landfills that are already overcrowded.

Donna Karan Label Goes Fur-Free!!

Posted in animal cruelty, animal rights, celeb, fashion, shopping by thuy | Tags: , , , ,

This is amazing to hear. PETA has tried for years to get Donna Karan amongst other designers to ditch fur. Some successfully and others not. Well days after PETA launched their (now disabled) DonnaKaranBunnyButcher.com site, DK has announced that starting with the fall 2009 line, the fashion house will no longer use fur. Tim Gunn of Project Runway narrated a video that was sent to DK, breaking down the cruel world of fur in the fashion industry.

Thank you to PETA for fighting the fight and to Donna Karan for doing the right thing. Chalk one up for the furry ones thanks to Tim Gunn!

Skip The Holiday Cards

Posted in environment, green tips by thuy | Tags: , ,

Well at least the paper kind. It’s an easy and simple step you can take to help save on waste and overall, the environment. I used to buy cards by the dozens and have them on back up for bdays, congrats, thank you’s, etc.

Those days are so over. I went through boxes of cards given to me over the years and got rid of most of them. I never look at them and they take up precious space.

It’s all about the e-cards. I made the one above a few years back. You pick a design, write your message, enter the email addy and press send. Ta-da. There are even funny videos, like the one below: You Can’t Wrap This- HAMMERTIME! Here’s a few sites that offer them. Find more by going to google.

And for all ya’ll asking, yes, that’s Bishop (king of all things green, literally) the P-I-M-P in that pic above and no I am not working for him. I know times are tough, but I’m not quite to that point. Although it’s nice to know I have friends in “high” places if shit ever hits the fan.
Look who I bumped into on the street the day after I wrote this post. Guess this will be my virtual 09 card. BTW…I inquired about any open positions. He’s cutting back on his “workforce” as well. Damn, scary times indeed!

Oh Christmas Tree…

Posted in environment by jen | Tags:

It’s hard to get in the Christmas spirit in sunny California, with the sun blazing, occasional heat waves and not a snowflake in sight. I guess that’s part of the reason I don’t usually do the whole christmas tree get down.

However, this flatpack plywood tree is definitely a dope look if I ever decide to go that route. Guess I’ll have to look into it for 2009 ‘cuz this one is so popular that it’s already sold out for 2008!!

Buro North, an Australian design company, is selling a “flatpack Christmas tree that is 80% more eco-friendly than a traditional pine. It’s made from environmentally aware ingredients, cut with energy-sipping CNC routers, and packed super flat for low carbon shipping.”

The tree is offered in 3 sizes and can be folded it up and stored away conveniently while taking up very little space.

Pierced Kittens For Sale WTF???

Posted in animal cruelty, animal rights, pets by thuy | Tags: , , , ,

File this under: Dumbass lady missing sensitivity chip needs to get her brain checked.

An unnamed Pennsylvania women was busted for trying to sell “Gothic kittens” with neck, ear and tail piercings on eBay. Animal Protection officers were tipped off after a listing appeared on a website under the title “pure black, tailless, pierced, gothic kitten.” The seller was asking for $400 per animal.

The woman, who had a pet grooming business in the basement of her home, is expected to face charges. I’m sorry but she needs to be beat upside the head with a recycled vibrator. I can’t wait for them to release her name/pic so I can put her ass on blast.

It’s too early to hear of all this fuckery. This story makes me want to go on a Sunday afternoon, organic Bloody Mary binge. Mmm.. Bloody Mary’s.

The thumbnail pictures below were the actual flix used on the site, showing the 3 month old kitten with two 14-gauge ear piercings and a “submission ring” through the back of its neck.

UPDATE: Here’s video with the story and her company is called: Pawside Parlor. I’m sure her business is going to shrink thanks to this.

Stop Shopping mission reminds us that even though we may be “hypnotized and consumerized,” we still have a chance to save ourselves this Christmas.

Rent-A-Tree Is The Business

Posted in environment, reduce/reuse/recycle, reusable by thuy | Tags: , , , ,

Embedded video from CNN Video

How does this sound? You pick a tree, it gets delivered, you pay a rental fee that would cost about the same as buying one, the tree gets picked up after the holiday, replanted and next year, you can 1) pick out a different tree or 2) call dibs on the tree you had the year before.

I need to know who started this genius idea and is he hot? If not, I’ll at least bow down to him. Ok, I just found the video and answered my own question. I bow down.

This system is brilliant! I get sick of seeing trees all up and down the streets months after the holidays are over. What an eye sore! Like I said previously, I’m having a Xmas-free Xmas but when/if I ever do partake in these type of festivities again, I will definitely be renting my tree.

Jeremy Piven Drops Out Of Broadway Due To High Mercury Count

Posted in celeb, environment, food/drink, health by thuy | Tags: , , , ,

Extreme mercury toxicity is what’s to blame for Piven’s recent illness which landed him 3 days in a hospital and his doctor ordering him to drop out of his Broadway show and get rest. Piven is reportedly an avid sushi eater, sometimes having it twice in one day.

Being half asian, I’ve always gotten crap for not eating seafood. The smell and consistency of fish has always grossed me out. I’ve tried to make myself like it, esp. since every time someone suggests what to eat, sushi is the first choice. I’ve recently heard of two friends that got deathly ill from having a high mercury count and their stories weren’t pretty. I remain seafood-free except for the occasional tuna sandwich.

Go here to learn more on which fish have the highest mercury levels: TUNA is one of them! Yikes. Be careful ya’ll.

WANTED: Eco-Fugitives

Well lookie here. Seems like the government is actually stepping up for the environment after all. They’ve started a most-wanted list and their targets are environmental fugitives accused of assaulting nature.

The crimes range from smuggling chemicalsls that eat away at the earths protective ozone layer, dumping hazardous waste into oceans and rivers and trafficking in polluting cars.

Similar to the FBI most-wanted list, the Environmental Protection Agency is unveiling a roster of 23 fugitives, complete with mugshots and descriptions of the charges on it’s website, http://www.epa.gov/fugitives.

This needs to be made into a show with John Walsh as the host! And while their at it, can they please put up these mugshots for shits n giggles? These guys are defintiely a danger to society, the ocean, air, wind, etc.

Carol Browner: Energy Czar

Looks like Carol Browner will be the White House point person for energy and environmental issues. Quick take: It’s a very green pick. When Browner was EPA head during the Clinton years, she was known as a fierce defender of federal environmental rules during a period when Newt Gingrich and the GOP were trying to dismantle them en masse, and she generally received high marks from green groups, though industry lobbyists and Republican staffers found her way too aggressive.

Special Delivery

Posted in auto/transportation, board/bikes, environment by thuy | Tags: , , ,

UPS won brownie points with me when I read that they were using paperless shipping stickers. Now I’m learning that they’re going to offer deliveries on bikes for the holiday season to go green and reduce costs. Environment loving, bicycle riding, man in a uniform + me = a match made in poo poo colored heaven.

This was going to be a gift-free year for me, but now, I may need to call my bro and ask him to send me something. Got that Tommy? Send your big sis some socks or an empty box. I don’t care, just send me a package and request it be delivered by bike.

Ok, I take that back. I was envisioning a hot Critical Mass type dude knocking on my door with a package and his bar code reader thingy, but after reading this account from a girl that witnessed the brown goodness, I’ve changed my mind. Beefy types aren’t my steez.

“We saw a UPS bike delivery on Union and 23rd in Seattle yesterday, Dec. 11. The bike was a Trek Mt. bike. The trailer was clunky and aluminum. I had never seen one like it before but it looked okay. The delivery guy did NOT look like he was from the bike scene, he was beefy and looked like… a UPS driver.”

If you live in California, Washington or Oregon and are looking for a seasonal job ($17/hr,) visit their career section after the jump. JUMP!

*Note: The picture above is an old school version of their delivery bikes. UPS started as a foot and bike delivery service. I believe they look different today, with a bike and a cargo carrier attached to the back. Couldn’t find a pic, but thats the description according to peeps that have actually received this service.

Saving The Planet One Hole AT A Time

Posted in environment, green tips by jen

Wow… I just thought this was a dope ass font when I stumbled across it, but now I’m really feeling it. Dutch company SRANQ conceptualized a font that uses less font while maintaining readability in an effort to save ink.

With the Ecofont SPRANQ hopes to increase environmental awareness as well as increasing customer awareness about printing behavior. They recognize that printing is both a waste of ink and paper and their hope is to inspire software giants and printer manufacturers to innovate in an environmentally conscious manner.

They tried lots of possible ink-saving-options. From extra thin letters to letters with outlines only. They experimented with using various shapes: dashes, squares, triangles and even asterisks. In the end the circle was choosen as the best option.

You can download the ecofont into your font folder here for FREE!!

Note- The Ecofont works best when using font size 9 or 10. The results vary depending on your software.

Universal Goes Green

Posted in environment, fashion, film/tv/print, reduce/reuse/recycle by thuy | Tags: , , , ,

In my profession as a wardrobe stylist, I see so much waste on a daily basis, it’s sad. There’s not much you can do about it. I’m sure as hell not walking up into Yves St. Laurent or Chanel on Rodeo Drive with my reusable Whole Foods bags and saying “please use these instead.” I shudder at the thought of the reaction I would get from some of the snooty hags salespeople that work in those stores.

Anyway, I almost creamed my bamboo panties when I went to one of my favorite costume houses and saw their “go green” signage. Usually when you pull for TV, you pull ALOT! I’m talking truckloads. The clothes are on hangers but all the shoes and accessories go into plastic bags. Well now Universal has taken a step in the right direction and got these reusable fabric bags for the accessories. I Heart Uni!

My friends always ask me what the costume houses are like. It’s a huge warehouse with rows upon rows of clothing, costumes, shoes, hats, jewelry, props and everything under the sun from all different eras. You name it, they’ve got it and in every color, version and size you can think of. These pictures don’t capture the massive size of the Universal costume department. I’ve spent countless days in there over the years and I still have not seen everything there is to see.

We buy clothes all throughout our lives and eventually, they get thrown out. The items they have in a costume house live on forever. It’s like recycled apparel heaven and it’s one of my favorite places to go to.

Seriously, remember that movie Mannequin, when they get locked in the mall every night and Emmy (Kim Catrall) gets to wear all those fabulous dept. store clothes? Well, fab for the 80′s. I have dreams of getting locked in Universal or Warner Bros. and dressing up in Marie Antoinette gowns, 70′s fits and authentic vintage dresses from all around the world. Sigh.

Bye Bye Pet Love

Who can resist stopping at a pet store and wondering “how much is that puppy in the window?” We’ve all spent hours gazing at these fluffy little creatures and dreaming of bringing them home with us.

Unfortunately, the reality is that pets sold at pet stores endure horrible conditions on their way to the glassed-in prison in the mall.

Longstanding pet store, Pet Love, in the Beverly Center is closing their doors after 15 years in business amidst accusations of puppy mill practices.

National animal rescue organization, Best Friends Animal Society, staged an anti-puppy mill campaign at the mall with table and fliers and petitions for “A Puppy-Store-Free-L.A”, which led to the mall not renewing Pet Love’s lease.

Doors official close January 31st, 2009.

The message here is to get your pets from a rescue center or animal shelter.

Posted in Peeps We Rep, charitable causes, film/tv/print, girls we heart, home by thuy | Tags: , , , ,

Props to my girl Kahi Lee, a truly talented interior designer and host on HGTV’s “Design on a Dime.”

Kahi has teamed up with Botanist/Orange22 to unveil a new eco-friendly furniture line named “Unlock the Cure,” which benefits the Cancer Research Institute. The line consists of a cocktail table, bench and an end table with a cut out key design.

Kahi’s inspiration:

“I call my design “Unlock the Cure”. Cancer has affected far too many people in my life and I’m committed to doing something about it. The cure is out there, we just need to find the key. The light-reflective and luminous quality of the metallic finish symbolizes hope and optimism.”

Well, I too have a thing for keys..and a thing for being eco-friendly and I, like many, have been affected by a loved one suffering from cancer. Thanks to Kahi, for designing these beautiful pieces to remind us all to keep hope alive in finding a key to the cure.
