Boys We Heart: Van Jones
Posted in boys we heart, environment, home, solar, sustainability by thuy | Tags: green collar jobs, police brutality, prison, van jonesVan Jones is an activist working to combine solutions to social inequality and environmental destruction. He founded the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, which promotes alternatives to violence and incarceration, in 1996. He has won many honors including a Reebok Human Rights Award and an Ashoka Fellowship, and has served on the boards of many groups, including: the National Apollo Alliance, Social Ventures Network, Rainforest Action Network and Bioneers. The City of Oakland has adopted the Ella Baker Center’s “Green Jobs Corps” proposal, and Van is pushing to create the first-ever Green Enterprise Zone in Oakland.
Excuse me, I have some googling to do..gotta find out if Mr. Jones is married.
*UPDATE: Damnit, he’s married! I was ready to pack my bags and head back to my old stomping grounds in Oakland. Why are all the good ones taken???

Olsen Haus Shoes Rocks My Socks
Posted in animal rights, environment, fashion, shopping by thuy | Tags: environment, olsen haus, shoes, veganBeen eyeing shoes from Olsen Haus for quite some time. I would like to tell ya’ll what this fine company represents in the shoe game in my own words but they put it down so beautifully on their website, I’m just gonna rip a small tidbit from their philosophy page and save myself some time. Sorry, but after a 14 hour workday my fingers are giving me the side eye and telling me to get my arse to bed.
Business as Usual? More like Business Unusual.
The philosophy of olsenHaus is anchored in the universal truth, respect for all beings, with a dedication to the expression of truth in the material world. We are committed to being 100% animal-free / cruelty-free, producing functional goods, with a high standard of ethical social responsibility in animal rights, human rights, and the environment. Products are made of non-animal materials, in sample rooms and factories that are personally checked for ethical practices & environmental impact.
While many shoes kill, pollute, and destroy lives and ecosystems on their journey to your feet, we recognize these destructive production practices and do not consider them ‘business as usual’. We at Olsenhaus believe these processes can evolve toward a respect for animals, ecosystems and people.
Damn, that was like reading a bedtime story. Off to sleepytime I go so I can dream of kick ass companies that actually care, thriving ecosystems and crystal blue, pollution-free skies. Oh and shoes. Lots of them.

“Sustainability is the new luxury“, is their new motto.
The eco-friendly Heritage collection, is described as “signature sportswear for the really modern attitude.” The line debuting this summer, ranges from $39 to $150 and is made out of organic cotton, soy silk, and bamboo.
The company has also started using more recycled materials and changing treatment processes so its laundry facilities can comply with the Business for Social Responsibility’s clean water guidelines.

Stranded Polar Bears Make Me Sad
Posted in art, environment, film/tv/print by thuy | Tags: art, climate change, environment, london, polar bears
Even if their fake. Over the last few days, everyone’s been talking about a polar bear and a cub seen in London. It was actually a 16 foot high sculpture floating on the River Thames to mark the launch of “Eden”, a new natural history TV channel.
It took two months to make and was created by a team of 15 artists. This 100% recyclable structure is 20 x 20 and weighd three thousand pounds. The sculpture traveled 7.5 miles from Greenwich to Tower Bridge and the Houses of Parliament for a photo shoot.
Sir David Attenborough said: “The melting of the polar bears’ sea ice habitat is one of the most pressing environmental concerns of our time. I commend Eden for highlighting the issue; we need to do what we can to protect the world’s largest land carnivores from extinction.”

Happy New Year- Again!
Posted in events, holiday by thuyMany people have heard of Chinese New Year but not Vietnamese Tet (Traditional New Year.) Tet falls sometime between the last ten days of January and the middle part of February. The year 2009 is the Chinese/Vietnamese Year of the Ox.
Tet is a time for family reunions, exchanging gifts, best wishes, forgiving others, paying debts; in short, to start the new year with a clean slate, or else a bad luck curse will remain with you for the coming year. One traditional practice during Tet is the distribution of red envelopes filled with “lucky”
money, with the red envelopes symbolizing wealth and fortune. Children pay respects to their elders by wishing them good luck with crossed arms in exchange for li xi (red envelopes.)
Literally, Tet Nguyen Dan means the first morning of the first day of the new period. Officially, it marks the beginning of a new year on the lunar calendar. In reality, it is a friendly, festive, family holiday. Painstaking care is given to starting the year out right, since it is believed the first day and the first week of the new year will determine the fortunes or misfortunes for the rest of the year.
You can wish Chúc Mừng Năm Mới (Greet New Year to You) to the Vietnamese, or Phat Tai (Wealth) to the Chinese.
Wishing you all good fortune for the new year. Lawd knows we all need it!

130 Tons Of Inauguration Litter
Posted in environment, events, politickin', reduce/reuse/recycle, reusable by thuy | Tags: inauguration, litter, trash, washingtonDamn! I guess that’s expected for the turnout of the inauguration. Unfortunately most of it ended up on the ground because many trash cans were removed for security reasons.
I can understand the usual suspects..fliers, drink/food containers and trash in general but what’s up with the blankets, sleeping bags, foldout chairs, pillows, coolers, gloves, and personal items that were left behind? Lazy ass mother #@*%*’s. You got the shit there, you couldn’t take it back with you? And this is the meaning of a “throw-away society.” Short-lived and disposable. I’m sure there are a lot of shelters or homeless people that could have used that stuff.
Other litter that was left behind came from vendors hawking Obama souvenirs including chairs, tables and bags full of unsold merchandise.
At least some people listened to what Obama said that day and stayed behind to pick up after others.
Just came across this blog called Litter Free Inauguration. Check them out on CBS News.

Pambo: This One’s For You Paul!!
Posted in animal cruelty, animal rights, celeb, eye candy, food/drink by thuy | Tags: animal cruelty, kfc, pamela andersonPam Anderson by David LaChapelle
You won’t find Pamela Anderson’s release at your local multiplex. The former Baywatch star and longtime animal advocate gave her voice for this video “Kentucky Fried Cruelty,” an undercover exposé blowing the whistle on the cruel treatment of animals at KFC’s factory farm and slaughterhouse suppliers. The video details just how horribly KFC treats chickens. Birds are so crippled that they can’t even walk, live birds are forced into tanks of scalding-hot water while completely conscious and able to feel pain, and Moorefield, W.Va., slaughterhouse workers kill birds by slamming them against the wall and stomping on them.
Thanks for the kind words Pauly boo-boo. Press play. It’ll make you feel better. xx
Oh and for those of you that have weak stomachs or don’t like to see violence- don’t press play.

Our Clothing Habits Are Hurting The Environment
Posted in Uncategorized, environment, fashion, sexy ting tings, shopping by thuyThe UK group More Than Pretty Nickers wants the fashion industry to take a stand against destruction to the environment for production of clothes. We are starting to see more lines made from organic textiles and designers coming out with eco-friendly lines, but it also comes down to the consumer.
Buy less and choose quality, classic pieces that will last a long time. Seems a bit unrealistic with the birth of fast fashion, trends changing every month and stores that sell disposable clothes such as Forever 21 and H&M.
It’s the big name fashion houses that should be paying attention to this. Stella McCartney is a great example. She refrains from using fur or leather in her line and uses some green practices for her business. Even the shopping bags used in her store are biodegradable. Small things like that can make a big difference in helping our precious environment.

Free Food At Whole Foods??
Posted in food/drink by jen | Tags: whole foodsGreen grocery mecca, Whole Foods, has got some ‘splainin to do to John Schultz, an employee who was fired for trying to aprehend a shoplifter. The cause for his dismissal was for “touching” the shoplifter in the process of the citizen’s arrest. He grabbed the man’s jacket and put his leg behind the shoplifters’ leg.
The Whole Foods manager, insisted John let the shoplifter go, and told the media that the fact that John had touched him, period, was grounds for termination.
Wow, That’s going to make it pretty difficult for them to enforce any type of shoplifting security….

See How Single Stream Recycling Works
Posted in reduce/reuse/recycle by thuy | Tags: single stream recylcingHere in LA, we have our blue recycle bins where we toss together a variety of paper, glass, plastic and aluminum, and lord knows what else. I’ve always wondered how it gets separated once it makes it to the plant. What happens if I accidently put a plastic piece with the #5 in there? Here’s two clips that break it on down.
I did learn one thing. Loose shredded paper is a problem. They suggest putting it in a clear plastic bag. Great more plastic. Whatever it takes I guess.

Serve In Honor Of MLK Day
Posted in charitable causes, events, politickin' by thuy | Tags: day of service, martin luther king jr, obama, renew america, vounteerGen. Colin Powell, a Republican who endorsed President-elect Barack Obama before the November election, has together with the Presidential Inaugural Committee announced the “Renew America Together” initiative, which will kick off on Jan. 19th, the day before Mr. Obama is sworn in as president.
The initiative, which will begin on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, is a call to “all Americans to make an ongoing commitment to serve their communities and their country,” according to a release.
“At this moment of great purpose and great promise, President-elect Obama is calling on all Americans to make an ongoing commitment to serve their communities and their country,” said Powell, an honorary co-chair of the inauguration. “We’re not just asking the American people for one day of service. We are asking you to make an ongoing commitment of your time – an hour, a weekend, whatever you can spare. Because that’s how we’re going to rebuild this country and meet our great challenges –
together.”
To kick off the initiative on the 19th, Mr. Obama, Vice President-elect Joe Biden and their families will participate in community service projects in the D.C. area.
As times are tough right now and many are out of work, this would be the perfect time for us all to give back to our communities. It could be for one day, one week or ongoing.

My Google Search Is Hurting The Environment?
Posted in environment, news, tech/gadgets by thuy | Tags: carbon emissions, environment, google searchSo according to some smart Harvard physicist dude, my two google searches above used the same amount of energy as boiling water for a cup of tea. 7 grams of CO2 to be exact.
Normally this might be something that would give me “green” guilt but hey, at least we’re not all polluting the air by driving to the library to do research. Damn, remember those days?
A single cheeseburger has a carbon footprint of around 3,600 grams – over 500 times larger than a Google search. Excuse me while I go Google how many grams my veggie burger generates.
Update: Google has responded
to The Times article, stating that a single search is actually equivalent to a mere 0.2 grams of CO2. The blog post also details some of Google’s efforts to further green technology as well as the energy efficiency of its own data centers.

The Honda Insight 2010 will start selling on April 22, 2009 (Earth day) with starting prices of $18,500 and fuel efficiency of about 60mpg.
In addition to a sophisticated hybrid engine, the Insight also features another fuel-saving device. The Insight comes standard with a driver-focused fuel-efficiency enhancement technology named Eco Assist. As part of this system, pushing the dash-mounted ECON button modifies various vehicle systems to minimize the vehicle’s overall energy use for increased fuel economy. A sophisticated feedback system uses ambient color behind the speedometer to indicate efficiency as you drive. And a cumulative scoring system provides ongoing support.
