What A Cute Buttney

Around The World For Earth Hour
Posted in events, eye candy, news by thuy | Tags: earth hour picturesLights on the Las Vegas Strip are viewed looking northbound from the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Bund on the banks of the Huangpu River in Shanghai, China.
The Eiffel Tower in Paris, France.
The skyline of downtown Toronto, Canada.
Go to www.Boston.com to see the rest of the amazing shots from around the world.
And to all the haters that criticized Earth Hour, please stick a recycled dildo in your piehole.
Of course Earth Hour itself is not going to solve all of our environmental problems. But, it’s not supposed to solve all the problems. It was not an effort to conserve power for one hour. It was meant to be a symbolic event- not only to raise awareness – but to show the “powers that be” that there are hundreds of millions of individuals, and tens of thousands of communities, towns, cities, governments on this Planet Earth that are aware and are demanding that changes start NOW!
Every action taken, large or small, is the opposite of doing nothing.

Rock Row: Eagle Rock Townhomes
Posted in home, los angeles by thuy | Tags: eagle rock, LEED, rock row, townhomesThese fifteen fee-simple townhomes finally provide a realistic opportunity for quality homeownership. Priced from $463,000 to $529,000, Angelenos can now afford sustainable, sizable homes of superior quality. Located in the historic Eagle Rock neighborhood, these brand new homes are 40% larger than the typical bungalow home for competitive prices.
Each unit has a series of decks and balconies arranged to guarantee privacy, while affording the occupant abundant usable outdoor space. Reacting and adjusting to its neighbor, the townhouses each have their own character while fitting into the whole.
GREEN BUILDING. This project will also be the first Small Lot Subdivision in the City of Los Angeles to be LEED Certified under the new LEED for Homes program, incorporating many environmentally conscious features, ranging from a permeable driveway of grass pavers to instant hot water heaters. LEED Certification also guarantees excellent indoor air quality, very low utility bills, and an energy efficient and sustainable design and construction. An ecological viewpoint is carried from schematic design to the finishes and fixtures.
NOT CONDOMINIUMS. Rock Row is one of the earliest projects to be entitled under the new LA City Small Lot Subdivision Ordinance. This ordinance encourages homeownership through smart growth practices. These homes are structurally independent from the foundation to the roof; these are not condominiums, there is no HOA, and the owner actually owns the land.
I want to live there!
Open house this Sunday from 1-4 p.m. For more renderings, floor plans and info, click here.

Ode For Intelligent Optimists
Posted in charitable causes, environment, film/tv/print, food/drink, health, news, sustainability by thuy | Tags: news, ode magazine, positive newsOde is an independent magazine about the people and ideas that are changing the world.
Sometimes it’s difficult to see beyond the war, poverty, exploitation and pollution that the mainstream media use to fill our view of the world. But there is more to life. There are other stories to report. Stories of countless initiatives being launched around the globe by people devoted to justice, respect and equality. Stories that bridge the gap between thinking and doing, between rage and hope, and the painful gap between the rich and poor – and thus build peace and sustainability.
That is the news that Ode promises to deliver. By reading Ode you connect to a network of positive change and inspiration. Ode points the way to knowing better, doing better and feeling better.
Ode publishes ‘the stories that are different from the ones we are brainwashed to believe’ (Arundhati Roy). Ode challenges us and invites us to change. We realise that change starts with information. We can only make a choice to change things for the better when we learn how it can be done. Similarly, we can only change our behaviour when we understand the harmful effects of what we do.
Ode teaches and inspires us, helps us see how every one of us can contribute to a more just and sustainable world.
Ode is printed on recycled paper or you can do your “green” civil duty and receive the digital version. Subscribe here and you’ll get the first issue free and then the one year subscription will be $19.95. They’ll also plant a tree for joining as well as send you a Thich Nhat Hanh meditation CD.

Isn’t She Lovely?
Posted in food/drink, girls we heart, health, organic, politickin', veggie love by thuy | Tags: garden, local, michelle oban, white houseAbout two dozen elementary school students helped first lady Michelle Obama break ground on the first day of spring for a garden on the White House grounds.
The 1,100-square-foot garden, the first of its kind since Eleanor Roosevelt planted a victory garden during World War II, will grow dozens of vegetables, berries and herbs.
The collection of crops, a wish list from White House kitchen staff, will include lettuces, squash, fennel, rhubarb, cucumbers and sweet and hot peppers. White House chefs will use the produce to prepare meals for the family and for official functions, and some of the produce will be donated to Miriam’s Kitchen, a soup kitchen near the White House.
There will also be a beehive.
“We’re going to try to make our own honey here as well,” Obama told the fifth-graders from Bancroft Elementary School in Washington before they got to work on Friday.
The students will be brought back to the White House next month to help with the planting, and after that to help harvest and cook some of the produce in the mansion’s kitchen. The first harvest is expected by late April.
With the garden, Obama initiated a public campaign to help Americans better understand where their food comes from.
I think I’ve made it clear how I feel about Obama, but just to let ya’ll in on a lil’ secret, I crush on Michelle too.

Revolution Fitness is offering spinning classes on the Green Spinner NXT Bike, which transports all the energy you generate in class right back into the gym’s power supply.
In every spin class, one of the new StarTrac stationary bikes is attached to a battery, which is getting powered up through the energy generated by the spinner. The other end is then plugged into the mic or stereo and powers them up.
As of right now, it’s only one bike in every class, which you can reserve in advance, but the owners are looking to eventually make Revolution Fitness BYOB (bring Your Own Battery) so you can bottle up your workout to power anything you like.

Breakin’ It Down: Sustainability
Posted in breakin' it down, environment by thuy | Tags: earth, environment, natural resources, sustainability, sustainableSustainability is broadly defined as meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
(1) The term “sustainability”, when applied institutionally within a university, is essentially the development of a process or management system that helps to create a vibrant campus economy and high quality of life while respecting the need to sustain natural resources and protect the environment.
(2) Sustainable programs are those that result from an institution’s commitment to environmental, social and economic health, or the “triple bottom line”. Sustainability has both individual and institutional applicability, and is usually a balancing act.
To be sustainable, regardless of context, the earth’s resources must be used at a rate at which they can be replenished. There is now clear scientific evidence that humanity is living unsustainably, and that an effort is needed to keep human use of natural resources within sustainable limits.

Recycled Skateboards For Furniture
Posted in auto/transportation, board/bikes, home, office, reduce/reuse/recycle by thuy | Tags: contemporary design, eames lounge, nelson bench, noguchi, skate study house, skateboardNewport Beach-based design firm Skate Study House takes its inspiration from contemporary design, California living and most importantly- skate board culture. Works like the Noguchi coffee table, the Nelson bench, the Eames Lounge and more are reproduced with the features of a classic skateboard deck. The “Jet Set Lounge” shown above, is a skateboard-inspired take on the original Le Corbusier Lounge. This version uses neoprene wetsuit material used by surfers and 8 skateboard decks as support.
A GearCrave favorite, the Noguchi coffee table inspired the skate style version by Skate Study House, theTokyo Lounge Table. Where the original employed dark, smooth, geometric wood as its base, the Tokyo table uses a split skateboard deck in the same fashion. The template for this skateboard deck is from the Jim Gray Pro Model, well known in the 80s.
Another all-time GearCrave favorite, the Eames Lounge and Ottoman are reproduced here with skateboard vision. The Godfather Lounge and Ottoman uses 7 walnut laminated skate decks with cushions on the metal frame.
Last, the classic, oft-copied Nelson wall clock has found its own inspiration from the half-pipe. The Skate Study House version, shown here as the Astro Clock, uses flourescent skate wheels and bearings in place of the bright painted wood pieces on the Nelson version.
More info and ordering details are available on the Skate Study House website.

Surfrider Foundation have teamed up with Saatchi & Saatchi LA to create “Catch of the Day”, a guerrilla ad campaign aimed at bringing attention to the rampant polluting of our oceans and beaches. Different types of unsavory garbage were collected from beaches across the country and then packaged to look like commonly sold seafood meat. The packages were then placed around specific local farmers’ markets – in an effort target seafood consumers. It’s a provocative approach that delivers an undeniably clear message.

Baby Elephant Gets A Prosthetic Leg
Posted in in the wild by thuy | Tags: baby elephant, fake leg, landmine, prostheticI saw this story a few days ago about a baby elephant that was fitted with a prosthetic leg in Lampang, Thailand, after losing a limb from stepping on a landmine. I just came across actual video of Mosha and her prosthetic leg on Green Daily, shown below.
The baby elephant was rescued when she was seven-months-old and brought to the Friends of the Asian Elephant hospital where she became the first elephant in the world to be fitted with an artificial leg in 2007.
Now aged three, Mosha is growing at such a rate she has now been fitted with a second prosthetic leg.
Stumbling around on three limbs at the world’s first elephant hospital, she refused to mix with other elephants and shunned food.
Doctors had feared the worst until she had a chance meeting with Dr. Therdchai Jivacate, who runs a foundation for human amputees.
Jivacate knew that Mosha would not survive as she grew heavier with age. “When she cannot walk, she is going to die,” he said.
Almost a year after her operation, Mosha eats 200 pounds of food a day and is growing so fast that doctors recently fitted her with a second, larger prosthesis.
After her daily exercises, Mosha takes a nap. The prosthesis is only removed when she sleeps.
I agree with Cat, who posted the video. The poor elephant does look stressed or confused. Hopefully it was just from the commotion and the multitude of handlers surrounding her at the time.

Victoria’s Secret Goes Organic And Vegan
Posted in animal cruelty, beauty by thuy | Tags: animal rights, beauty, cruelty free, pink body, vegan, victoria's secretVictoria’s Secret has gone green and vegan with their brand new line of cruelty-free beauty products called Pink Body. Pink Body can now be added to the growing list of cruelty-free brands.
These products, ranging from tinted lip butter to an energizing sugar scrub (sounds yummy!), include great skin-nourishing ingredients like oat extract and soy milk, and body-purifying antioxidants like grape seed oil. And these products are so eco-friendly that even the packaging is made from recycled material. Props to Vicky’s Secret!

Radiohead: All I Need
Posted in baby/child, music by thuy | Tags: all i need, mtv, radiohead, sweatshop, teenage, thom yorkeRadiohead joined MTV’s campaign against human trafficking in their “All I Need” video:
“They’ve produced a video of two parallel stories running, one of a little boy in the West and one of a little boy in a sweatshop in the East, and the boy [in the West] ends up buying the shoes from the sweatshop. It’s actually quite powerful,” Yorke said. “It’s the sort of images I have in my head anyway. Sometimes when you’re walking down High Street and you’re looking at the incredibly cheap [sneakers], you sort of think, ‘Hmmm, well how did they manage to make that so cheaply?’ It sort of reminds me of one of my preoccupations, so I’m touched that the music goes with that. I think it’s great.”
This video is powerful. It’s scary that in this day and age 2.5 million people are victims of human trafficking. While one video can not make a huge difference, it can definitely raise awareness to the problem.

Green Tip: Buy Organic
Posted in environment, food/drink, green tips, health, organic, veggie love by thuy | Tags: farms, health, organic, pesticides, toxinsIt’s common sense; organic food is good food. Good to eat, good for the environment, good for the small-scale farmers and farm workers who produce it. By the year 2000, the USDA estimates that half of all U.S. farm products will come from only 1% of the farms. The EPA says that agriculture is responsible for 70% of the pollution to the country’s rivers and streams caused by chemicals, erosion, and animal waste runoff. Organic farming may be one of the last ways to keep both ecosystems and rural communities healthy and alive.
Organic food doesn’t contain toxins like pesticides, heavy metals, dangerous industrial chemicals (for example, artificial flavors, colors or preservatives). And everything in it is natural: it’s real food, not “Frankenfood” created in a laboratory for profit regardless of the fact that genetically modified, synthetic foods have massive, well-known health hazards
