Port-a-pint

Summer is almost here and that means backyard bbq’s and kegs galore.  Be the envy of all your lushed out friends and pop one of these babies out.  At least when you’re ten sheets to the wind you’ll be able to find your BYOC out of the sea of unclaimed red cups.

Joaquin Phoenix Is BACK! And Hot. But Will Still Make You Cry

Posted in celeb, fashion, wild things by thuy | Tags: , , ,

When I saw this link sent to me from a gf, I went giddy seeing Joaquin cleaned up, the crazy washed out from his eyes and ready to be my baby daddy again.  My thrill was immediately replaced by horror.   I have forced myself to watch Earthlings and many other animal cruelty videos but I had to close my eyes several times while watching this one.

It’s one thing to kill an animal humanely (is there such a thing?) for our luxury fashion addictions but to cut up and skin an animal while it is alive and leave if for dead, sometimes for up to 4 days???….words just can’t explain.

I just checked all of my shoes and bags and realized I do have a clutch made from what looks like alligator skin- I got it from a styling gig.  It’s getting donated TODAY.

WARNING:  This video is EXTREMELY GRAPHIC!!!  But, I still suggest you watch it.  You don’t have to stop buying or throw anything out- but at least you’ll be conscious of how it came to be.

Octomom Says No To Porn, Yes To PETA

Nadya Suleman has fourteen mouths to feed and is rumored to be running behind in mortgage payments. Well guess who’s come to the rescue by offering her 5 G’s and a months supply of veggie burgers? PETA!  FTW!!!  From their website:

It seems like everybody has an opinion about “Octomom” Nadya Suleman, who gave birth to eight babies last year. No matter where you stand on that decision, starring in porn isn’t Suleman’s only option to remedy the recently rumored foreclosure proceedings on her home in La Habra, Calif. In fact, PETA is offering to bolster her finances by paying to place an ad on her front lawn:

Vivienne Westwood Designs For Sigg?

Posted in fashion, reduce/reuse/recycle by thuy | Tags: , ,

Picture 5

WHY??  I LOVE Vivienne Westood and  I USED to love SIGG until they left a sour taste of BPA and deception in my mouth.  Yesterday I read that the queen of punk teamed up with the lie tellers to design a new bottle and I thought I was going to have to go back on my word and buy a SIGG again (yes I’m a label whore).  But now that I’ve seen the bottle, I see that’s not the case. Yawn.

Her SIGG bottle design inspired her FW10/11 catwalk menswear designs with the slogan Act Fast, Slow Down. Stop Climate Change.

I still got love for you VW- long live the Queen!

The Story Of Bottled Water

Posted in food/drink, reduce/reuse/recycle, video/media by thuy | Tags: , , ,

I have to admit, I haven’t ditched plastic bottles completely.  I try to remember to fill up my reusable bottles for on-the-go purposes but sometimes I forget or don’t want to be hassled with carrying it everywhere with me.  Cut to this little animated video from the lady that brought us The Story of Stuff.  I think I’ll start trying a little harder to stop being so forgetful and lazy.

Annie Leonard, the activist filmmaker behind “The Story of Stuff” and the above short, “The Story of Bottled Water,” had this to say:

In the last few decades, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Nestle and other big beverage companies have spent untold millions making us afraid of tap water. They’ve told us that if we want to be sure what we drink is pure and clean — not to mention hip and fashionable — we should buy bottled water. After all, nobody cool or environmentally conscious drinks tap water, right?

The thing is, there are a lot of inconvenient truths the bottled water ads don’t mention:

• Bottled water is subject to fewer health regulations than tap water. In 2006, Fiji Water ran ads bragging that their product doesn’t come from Cleveland, only to have tests show a glass of Fiji water is lower quality than Cleveland tap. Oops!

• Up to 40% of bottled water is filtered tap water. In other words, if you’re concerned about what’s in your tap water, just cut out the middleman and buy a home water filter.

• Each year, according to the Pacific Institute’s Peter Gleick, making the plastic water bottles used in the U.S. takes enough oil and energy to fuel a million cars. And that doesn’t even include the fuel required to ship, fly or truck water across continents and state lines.

• Three-fourths of the half-billion plastic water bottles sold in the U.S. every week go to the landfill or to incinerators. It costs our cities more than $70 million to landfill water bottles alone each year, according to Corporate Accountability International.

Santa Monica Restaurant Closes Down After Being Caught Serving Whale Meat

Posted in food/drink, los angeles, wild things by thuy | Tags: , ,

hump_close1

Whoa!  That was quick.  After being busted a few weeks back for serving endangered whale meat, Hump restaurant has decided to close up shop.  From their website:

THE HUMP IS CLOSING ITS DOORS

After twelve years doing business in Santa Monica, The Hump will be closing its doors effective March 20th, 2010.

The Hump hopes that by closing its doors, it will help bring awareness to the detrimental effect that illegal whaling has on the preservation of our ocean ecosystems and species. Closing the restaurant is a self-imposed punishment on top of the fine that will be meted out by the court. The Owner of The Hump also will be taking additional action to save endangered species.

One such action will be to make a substantial contribution to one or more responsible organizations dedicated to the preservation of whales and other endangered species.

The Hump apologizes to our loyal customers, the community of Santa Monica, and the public at large for our illegal actions. While the current difficulties faced by The Hump overshadow the many friendships formed over the years, we want our customers and friends to know how much we thank you for your support.

Good riddance!

World Water Day: Clean Water For A Healthy World 3/22/10

Picture 17

Today is World Water Day so get ready for a flurry of water related posts.

Brita and Nalgene (the real BPA-free reusable bottle-cough*SIGG*cough) teamed up to create the FilteForGood pledge to reduce bottled water waste.  Together, filtered water and a reusable bottle are a solution for going green at home and on the go.

Take the pledge and fill your reusable bottle instead of the landfill.

About World Water Day

March 22 was first deemed World Water Day in 1993 by the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) as an international day of observance and action to draw attention to the role that freshwater plays in our world and lives. Today’s reality is that one in eight people in the world don’t have access to safe water, millions of women and children must still spend several hours a day collecting water from distant, often polluted sources, and 2.5 billion people live without a toilet.

To do something about that UN-Water has chosen Clean Water for a Healthy World as theme for World Water Day 2010. The overall goal of the World Water Day on 22 March 2010 campaign is to raise the profile of water quality at the political level so that water quality considerations are made alongside those of water quantity.

The dress worn by Kate Moss will be auctioned off later in the year and hopes are high that will funnel extra cash for the charity.

Santa Monica Restaurant Busted For Selling Endangered Whale Meat

Posted in food/drink, wild things by thuy | Tags: , , ,

typhoon_whalemeat

Typhoon Restaurant Inc., which owns The Hump restaurant, and 45-year-old Kiyoshiro Yamamoto of Culver City, were charged Wednesday with illegally selling an endangered species product.

Two undercover diners working with the producers from “The Cove” requested whale from the “chef’s choice” menu and were served 8 slices of it for $600.  Yes, six hundred mother effin’ dollars!  WTF?  The diners bagged a sample of the meal and testing confirmed it was indeed sei whale.

Under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, it is illegal to sell any kind of whale meat in the United States, and sei are listed as endangered. Sei whales are the third-largest baleen whale, behind the blue and finback whales.

Hooray for the Oscar winning doc, The Cove and BOO to Typhoon!
