“Gristle” By Moby: From Factory Farms to Food Safety

Posted in film/tv/print, health by thuy | Tags: ,

GristleCover.JPG

More than ever, meat is making the headlines and growing numbers of people are becoming more informed and passionate about what they eat. The facts are compelling: contamination cases are on the rise, obesity has become pandemic in the United States, and the animal agriculture sector is responsible for more human-induced greenhouse gas emissions than the entire transportation sector.

Gristle is for the growing number of people–from omnivores to vegans–who are thinking twice about the consequences of our industrial factory-farming system of raising animals for food. Multi-platinum musician Moby and leading food policy activist and expert Miyun Park have brought together fifteen of the country’s leading voices on this issue–an eclectic group from such diverse backgrounds as farming, workers’ rights activism, professional athletics, science, environmental sustainability, food business, and animal welfare advocacy–who together eloquently lay out how and why industrial animal agriculture unnecessarily harms workers, communities, the environment, our health, our wallets, and animals.

In the tradition of Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma, Gristle combines hard-hitting facts with a light touch and includes fascinating charts and illustrations depicting the stark realities of America’s industrial food system.

Dirty White Trash (With Gulls), 1998

British-born and -based artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster skillfully skirt the boundaries between beauty and the shadowier aspects of humanity, playing with our perceptions as well as our notions of taste. Many of their most notable pieces are made from piles of rubbish, with light projected against them to create a shadow image entirely different to that seen when looking directly at the deliberately disguised pile.

MLK_DEEP

As some of you know- I have several jobs (Hey mon, I Jamaican!  I got tree jobs, what about you?  You lazy coconut!) and one of my favorites is handling operations for a DJ I’ve loved since I was a wee one.  His name is Marques Wyatt and he’s been running DEEP here in Los Angeles for 11 years strong!  Some of you may remember his other joints- Brass, MAC’s Garage and Does Your Mama Know?- what, what?!?!?!  Damn, I’m aging myself.

Although I’ll be working this Sunday night, you can find me shaking my birthday butt on the dancefloor to some other legends such as Timmy Regisford, Dj Adam 12 (She Wants Revenge, AFEX) Anthony Valadez (KCRW/Dublab)  and the lovely Joplin.  No work or school on Monday so I’ll be looking forward to seeing some of you there.  If I can still see at that point.  : )

1/16 Happy Birthday today to one of my favorite Capricorns- SADE!  Queen is 51 and still looks the same as back in the day!

1/11 You know I love me some Mary J!!

1/19 Dolly Parton shares my actual day. Love this song with her and Willie Nelson from 1965.

1/16 Ok, she’s not a singer but hot mess Co-Kate Moss is another Capricorn I gotta give props to.  Why?  Johnny Depp is why- Durrr!  Here she is doing her best Nomi Malone pole impression, minus the glitter, high waisted thong and big hair.

Recycling Yard #6, Seattle 2004 44×59″

Haunting and thought provoking comes to mind when viewing the photographic works by Chris Jordan, a Seattle-based photographer and environmental advocate.

Every day, 426,000 cell phones are discarded.

Photographer Chris Jordan heard statistics like that and wondered “what, exactly, does that mean? What does that number look like?”

His answer resulted in a unique photographic document that puts into perspective precisely how much is thrown away by otherwise responsible citizens.

I love his work. Check out Running the Numbers and Midway: Message from the Gyre

I have to admit, while house cleaning recently, I was tempted to throw away my Sonicare toothbrush. On the Phillips website, they claim you can recycle the battery and they listed Best Buy and Radio Shack as places to take them to. Well guess what? They fucking lied! I went to both places and my ass got denied. I was so frustrated, I just wanted to toss it. But I came home, read how to take out the damn battery myself and then took it to an e-Cycle drop off. Total pain but I felt good for making the effort.

Please take the time and effort to recycle your gadgets. Don’t toss them in the trash! The electronics don’t recycle themselves. You buy ‘em, you take them to e-Cycle heaven.

2012 Movie Set Goes Green

Posted in film/tv/print by thuy | Tags: , ,

image.axd

For a big budget, Hollywood-style disaster film, 2012 probably wouldn’t come to mind as an “eco film” to most people. But not only does the movie serve as a message (or warning) of the effects of impending climate change, the director, Roland Emmerich, and producers took great strides to be as green as possible when making it.

Emmerich, who drives a hybrid and powers his home with solar panels, said “After making The Day After Tomorrow, I said to myself, ‘From now on my movies should have a green footprint.’”

For the production of 2012, carbon offsets were purchased, biofuel was used for generators, sets were recycled and what couldn’t be recycled was donated to Habitat for Humanity. Said Emmerich’s producer partner Michael Wimer, who also drives an all-electric RAV4. ‘It was important to us. Changes are happening to the planet, and you either take responsibility or you don’t.’

This is poodle art and apparently it’ all the craze. Contestants have two hours to pimp primp their dogs out with child safe hair coloring, shears and accessories. According to all the owners, dogs love humiliation attention and don’t mind the prep time or what it takes to be turned into these AMAZING pieces of living art. It’s amazing to me that their dogs tell them so.

Ok, I’m not gonna call this cruelty, but I am gonna call it CA-RAY-ZY. As in the owners of these dogs gotta be bat-shit crazy. Wired reports that CBS has embedded a video ad in Entertainment Weekly. The ad is called a “VIP (video-in-print) promotion” and it works similar to the audio greeting cards. Let me see.. a 2-5 minute promo and then a lifetime in a landfill. Makes total sense.

These photographs are the story of my trip to Greenland with my good friends from Thirty Seconds to Mars.
Jared Leto went to Greenland on an environmental mission to shoot a video for his band’s single, A Beautiful Lie, and invited me along to take photos.

He came back with an incredible video that focuses on the effect global warming is having on the world’s coldest climates and I came back with the photographs featured in this show.

Although it has only been two years since my trip, the glaciers and icebergs have already changed dramatically. I hope you enjoy the exhibit, but also take time to reflect on the fact that this ice is disappearing at an alarming rate.

Lady Gaga Dons Kermit To Denounce Fur

Never one to shy away from being outrageous, Lady Gaga wore this get up during an interview on a German TV show.

Inevitably, the interview took a turn towards Lady Gaga’s unconventional fashion choices in recent European interviews, specifically a coat made up completely of plush Kermit the Frog puppets.

“The Kermit the Frog outfit is by an incredible designer by the name of Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, and he does a lot of museum art fashion pieces,” said Gaga. “I really loved this one in particular because I thought it was commentary on not wearing fur, ’cause I hate fur and I don’t wear fur. We were all laughing at the house because it looks like a pile of dead Kermits.”

Heath Ledger X Modest Mouse: For The Whales

King Rat

Before his untimely death, Heath Ledger began directing a video for Modest Mouse’s “King Rat”. Unfortunately he died before the video was completed, and it has been languishing in limbo until now.

The concept of “King Rat” video is based on Ledger’s “vision, brave and unapologetic in its nature [which] marry his love of bold and original music with his impassioned stance against the illegal commercial whale hunts taking place of the coast of Australia each year.” Proceeds from this video’s downloads in its first month of release will go toward Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, an international non-profit organization committed to ending the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world’s oceans.

Watch Ledger’s music video, completed by his associates at the Masses, a violently unabashed commentary on illegal whale hunting.

Earth Cinema Circle

I’ve been reading about Earth Cinema Circle for quite some time and I’ve finally made the decision to join after realizing I’m pretty obsessed with movies such as ‘Food Inc.’ and ‘The Cove.’ Movies like these don’t usually get an entire back wall of “Guaranteed In Stock!” at Blockbuster- but they should!

Earth Cinema Circle is a DVD club dedicated to increasing social & environmental awareness through entertaining films.

How it works: Every other month the customer is sent 1 DVD containing 4 environmental movies on it. It is sent in 100% recycled packaging and after viewing the movies, they’re yours to keep. All that for the low price of $17.95 (plus $4.95 s+h.) Bonus: Earth Circle Cinema is sponsored by Gaiam and narrated by Ed Begley, Jr. Beat that Netflix!

If you break that down, including shipping, you’re only paying $5.73 a movie. Cheaper than a matinee and more fulfilling than the entire box set of Gossip Girl.

Check it out and do your recession ridden wallets a favor and support environmental filmmakers by joining Earth Cinema Circle now!

Must See Movie: Food, Inc.

Posted in film/tv/print, food/drink, health, organic, politickin', shopping, veggie love, video/media by thuy | Tags: , , , , , ,

Photobucket

In Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation’s food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government’s regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation’s food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment.

We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, herbicide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won’t go bad, but we also have new strains of E. coli—the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults.

Featuring interviews with such experts as Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation), Michael Pollan (The Omnivore’s Dilemma, In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto) along with forward thinking social entrepreneurs like Stonyfield’s Gary Hirshberg and Polyface Farms’ Joel Salatin, Food, Inc. reveals surprising—and often shocking truths—about what we eat, how it’s produced, who we have become as a nation and where we are going from here.

Literally! Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey starts a run at Staples Center on Wednesday. In the predawn hours before Jackson’s memorial, the elephants will walk from the train station to the arena.

Boo to the animal torturers known as Ringling Bros!

PS- the pic is from their last Staples Center trip in 2008. I’m cringing for the elephants and at those gas prices!
