Radiohead: All I Need

Posted in baby/child, music by thuy | Tags: , , , , ,

Radiohead joined MTV’s campaign against human trafficking in their “All I Need” video:

“They’ve produced a video of two parallel stories running, one of a little boy in the West and one of a little boy in a sweatshop in the East, and the boy [in the West] ends up buying the shoes from the sweatshop. It’s actually quite powerful,” Yorke said. “It’s the sort of images I have in my head anyway. Sometimes when you’re walking down High Street and you’re looking at the incredibly cheap [sneakers], you sort of think, ‘Hmmm, well how did they manage to make that so cheaply?’ It sort of reminds me of one of my preoccupations, so I’m touched that the music goes with that. I think it’s great.”

This video is powerful. It’s scary that in this day and age 2.5 million people are victims of human trafficking. While one video can not make a huge difference, it can definitely raise awareness to the problem.

Will.I.AM: Take Our Planet Back

Posted in environment, music by thuy | Tags: , ,

Nice to see musicians using their talent to raise awareness. This song was inspired by a speech from Al Gore and made it’s debut at the Inaugural Green Ball on the historic day that Obama was sworn in as 44th President of the United States. The song touches on pollution, pesticides, alternative power, disease and more.

Will.i.am owns a Tesla and is installing solar panels on his house: “I’ll be completely off the grid. There’s a lot we can do.”

7″ Wonder

Forget about them tricks on the side. My eyes are focused right in the middle on my favorite 50 year old, animal loving, crooner. Yea, he’s gained a little weight and I know he’s got the greys but I would totally sit on that 7″ record and spin.

Morrissey and his bandmates appear in their birthday suits for the sleeve artwork of his new single ‘I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris’.

I really wish I was the stylist for this shoot. I’d like to know what contraption they came up with to keep those records up. No amount of double sided tape would do.

I can’t wait to stalk see him at Coachella. Him and Public Enemy-WHAT???

Inaugural Balls Go Green

Posted in events, music, politickin' by thuy | Tags: , ,

There will be no shortage of parties this weekend in DC . Two balls that are making quite a buzz will also be raising awareness for the environment. Below is a brief description of the two but visit our friends over at Ecorazzi and read their post. “Battle Of The Green Inaugural Balls,” to get the detailed breakdown of both events.

01/17/09: The Green Inaugural Ball: Maximum Celebration, Minimal Impact, at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium celebrates grassroots efforts to protect and improve the environment. The carbon-neutral event is open to the public. Tickets for the black-tie gala are $500 apiece and five percent of ticket prices will go to nonprofit groups that have partnered with event planner Event Emissary.

01/19/09: The Green Ball: Inauguration of a New Green Economy. Al Gore and more than two dozen ecological and environmental coalitions are mentioned on the invitation, which encourages attendees to “bring together a diverse coalition of environmentally-forward organizations, entrepreneurs, scientists and advocates, celebrating a commitment to growing the New Green Economy.” BTW, this event is sold out.

Legs And Fran Boogie Says Yes You Can Do Good

Hearing about parties like this one makes me miss the Bay Area. My homies Fran, Legs (Rock Steady Crew NYC) and Apollo (Triple Threat DJ’s) are doing the damn thang by providing a night with slammin’ music and HELLA fun in exchange for 5 bones and 2 cans of food that will be donated to the San Francisco Food Bank, which works towards ending hunger in SF by distributing food and advocating for improvement in government food programs and policies.

I know we’re all watching our dollars nowadays but this is one event that you better not even think about asking to guest list love for.

Nice work fellas. I got 5 on it. 4-1-Fever represent!!

MJB, Please Tell Me What’s The 411?!

Posted in animal cruelty, animal rights, fashion, music by thuy | Tags: ,

Mary, Mary, Mary. I have been down with you since the days of “You Remind Me.” When I was going through heartache, my boom box wanted to scream at me for listening to “I’m going down” over and over and over again. You were also there when I found “Real Love,” for the 1st, 2nd, 5th, 8th time. You’ve been with me through the years.

I used to want dress like you, right down to the tights, oversized jerseys, knee pads and backwards caps, ok, not the knee pads. I have mortifying pictures that could ruin my fashion career today, of me and a friend at your concert in Oakland, decked out in an all over, double-F, Fendi print, two piece outfit with big ass white shades on. I’m shuddering as I type this.

I even named a GG&S category after one of your best songs ever.

But seriously girl, you’re doing the most in that dead animal look. “Share my world.” You can do it. Maybe if you watched one of those gory videos we love to post on our blog, you’ll be able to look at defenseless, furry animals in a different light and sing “Sweet Thing.”

“All That I Can Say,” is you’ll be “Just Fine” without it. I promise.

Pink Cloud Does It Again With Opportunity Green

Sarah (Pink Cloud Events) and GG&S locking down the Olan Mills prom pose.

Party people.

Organic beats provided by Dublab.

Opportunity Green held it’s two day conference at UCLA over the weekend and on Saturday night we got to be a part of the after party thrown by, none other than the event queen herself, Sarah Shewey of Pink Cloud Events.

There were yummy treats provided by some of our favorite eateries such as Leaf Cuisine, Tender Greens and Ciudad. Bevearges full of goodness were served by my friends new company, Barbelles. Hot chicks serving up canned heat is always a nice addition to any soiree. We loved the various stations that were set up for recycling and composting. No forks, plates, cups, or food bits went to waste. This was a party for the conscious.

Afterwards, a handful of peeps headed to Ecco in Hollywood, where they had a special table reserved for Ms. Shewey and her entourage. Environmentally friendly 360 vodka makes dirty dancing and innocent debauchery a lot more fun.

If you watch Planet Green’s Alter Eco show, keep your eye out for Sarah, she’s appeared in a few recent episodes.

50 Million Dollar Record Collection

Posted in music, reduce/reuse/recycle by thuy | Tags:

Does anyone want to help this poor guy recycle his record collection? Paul Mawhinney owns the largest collection of vinyl LPs and 45s in the world. Because of the digital music frenzy and the dwindling interest in physical music formats, Paul was forced to close his record shop. Now facing diabetes and rising health costs, he’s put up his entire collection for sale.

It had been appraised at about $50 million, but Paul was asking a mere $3 million. He’s had no serious offers, and an eBay auction back in February fell through. He is now selling his collection online here.

A fascinating fact about his collection:

If you started listening to the music in this collection on the day you were born, and listened every minute of every day, by the time you finished, you’d be 57 years old. That’s a lot of music. And it’s a lot of history.

Our Voices Will Change Their World

Posted in Peeps We Rep, baby/child, music, politickin' by thuy | Tags: , ,

The Agape Children’s Choir and Little Engine Productions have created a video called “Change My World,” with a non-partisan view, at encouraging voters to take an interest in our children’s future and taking their voices to the polls.

The emphasis of the words is on sending a positive political message while transcending party lines. Fifteen year-old Ayanna Stokes, who joined the choir at age ten, sings the lead vocals. This isn’t the first time Ayanna has used her musical talent in a political arena, as she was also a featured soloist for programs honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Stacy Peralta, an award winning documentary film maker known for such projects as Dogtown & Z Boys andRiding Giants, directed the video. The lyrics for the video, were written by Emmy nominated composer Tree Adams and producer Gina Matthews. Their collaborative goal was to use music as an inspiration, while using the voices of kids, to encourage voters to consider children and their future when they cast their ballots.

I recently attended Agape and pleasantly surprised to witness the children’s choir perform live. They sang, danced and even added in a message about recycling and the environment. Their performance was very inspiring, as is this video.

Do it for the children. Vote.

We all know of Queen for their classic songs- We Are The Champions, Bohemian Rhapsody, and We Will Rock You. I found another anthem from their collection and it rocks! Bicycle Race was a hit single from their album Jazz and was written by Queen’s frontman Freddie Mercury.

To release the song, Queen staged a bicycle race with 65 naked girls. A clip from this race was used as the single cover. The video was originally banned, and had to be re-edited with colour added to censor out any offensive imagery. The song is famed for its ‘bicycle bell solo’, which fans would often replicate live at Queen concerts with their own bells. Watch it at the 1:47 mark.

I want to hear Christopher Walken say, “I gotta have more bike bell.”

Here’s a promo that Britney shot with Russell Brand for the MTV VMA’s. I guess the concept is supposed to be “there’s an elephant in the room?” That’s the best they could do? An unnecessary use of an animal for human entertainment, and all for the sake of promoting a music award show and this train wreck? She may be looking better these days but I think she needs to work on loosening up her weave and putting down the Starbucks Frappuccino’s. Something still isn’t right in the head.
