Tatjana Patitz: For The Love Of Horses, Coco Eco Magazine Issue 11
Posted in fashion, wild things by thuy | Tags: coco eco magazine, Return to Freedom, Tatjana Patitz
Never in my wildest dreams would I have ever thought that I would one day style a model I used to love as a teen. Ever! But I did and to boot, we wrapped up the shoot afterwards, drinking wine and talking about rescue animals, chicken coops and the plight of mustangs in the wild. Swoon!
The concept of the story was simple. Tatjana’s passion for saving wild horses. No emphasis on high fashion. Just beautiful, simple, equestrian style clothing, Tatjana and the horses. The shoot took place at the Return to Freedom ranch located in Ojai, in which Tatjana is a spokesperson for.
RTF is dedicated to preserving the freedom, diversity and habitat of America’s wild horses through sanctuary, education and conservation, while enriching the human spirit through direct experience with the natural world.

Elaine Kim Studio
Posted in fashion, shopping by thuy | Tags: Elaine Kim
Fashion designer Elaine Kim has taken an eight year hiatus from the design world after creating for her previous line Product. After much reflection and unstoppable creativity she is back with her own line of eco-fashion that blends modern design with environmental awareness.
Elaine’s new designs use the new cupro cotton material. Cupro cotton is a soft fabric that is made from regenerated cellulose fibers from discarded cotton husks and wood pulp. The husks and pulp that provide the cellulose fibers come from the linter of the cotton boll which is a renewable source material and is regenerated on a yearly basis. By using the cupro cotton, Elaine is choosing to forgo both petroleum and forest depletion making the source of the fabrics she uses as environmentally sustainable as the fashions she creates from them.

Tatjana Returns To Freedom
Posted in fashion, wild things by thuy | Tags: Return to Freedom, Tatjana Patitz
Styling Tatjana yesterday was AMAZING! She was down to earth and stunning in person. We shot at the Return to Freedom sanctuary which Tatjana is a spokesperson for.
Return to Freedom is a non-profit wild horse sanctuary founded in 1997 by Neda DeMayo, and is the realization of her life-long dream: to protect the freedom and natural lifestyle of America’s free ranging wild horses.
Return to Freedom provides a safe haven to nearly 200 wild horses and burros recognizing that wild horses live in tightly bonded herd groups. They became the first sanctuary with a focus on rescuing entire family bands. Designed to be a model program, they implement alternative and minimally intrusive management philosophies.
Thanks to the Coco Eco team, Tatjana, John and everyone at RTF for all their hard work!
I cannot wait to see the final images. Stay tuned!

Speaking of Freedom- remember this video and the familiar faces?

“Gristle” By Moby: From Factory Farms to Food Safety
Posted in film/tv/print, health by thuy | Tags: Gristle, moby
More than ever, meat is making the headlines and growing numbers of people are becoming more informed and passionate about what they eat. The facts are compelling: contamination cases are on the rise, obesity has become pandemic in the United States, and the animal agriculture sector is responsible for more human-induced greenhouse gas emissions than the entire transportation sector.
Gristle is for the growing number of people–from omnivores to vegans–who are thinking twice about the consequences of our industrial factory-farming system of raising animals for food. Multi-platinum musician Moby and leading food policy activist and expert Miyun Park have brought together fifteen of the country’s leading voices on this issue–an eclectic group from such diverse backgrounds as farming, workers’ rights activism, professional athletics, science, environmental sustainability, food business, and animal welfare advocacy–who together eloquently lay out how and why industrial animal agriculture unnecessarily harms workers, communities, the environment, our health, our wallets, and animals.
In the tradition of Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma, Gristle combines hard-hitting facts with a light touch and includes fascinating charts and illustrations depicting the stark realities of America’s industrial food system.

No Questions Asked Drug Drop-Off Locations In So. Cal
Posted in health, reduce/reuse/recycle by thuy | Tags: Drugs

After just posting about the NY E-Waste event, I started to research where to recycle electronics in LA and guess what I came across? A website for safe drug drop-offs at local sheriff stations. Shit, I’d normally be too paranoid to post anything having to do with drugs and the po-po but this is for a good cause, right?
From the website No Drugs Down The Drain:
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, in conjunction with the Los Angeles County Departments of Public Health and Public Works present the “Safe Drug Drop-Off” Program. The program provides an opportunity for residents to safely and anonymously surrender any unused or expired prescriptions, over the counter medications, “SHARPS” (needles), or any other controlled substances. There will be no questions asked (wink*wink). We just want to get it off the streets.
Drop off at your own risk!

Joaquin Phoenix Is BACK! And Hot. But Will Still Make You Cry
Posted in celeb, fashion, wild things by thuy | Tags: Exotic Luxury Goods, Exotic Skins, peta, river phoenixWhen I saw this link sent to me from a gf, I went giddy seeing Joaquin cleaned up, the crazy washed out from his eyes and ready to be my baby daddy again. My thrill was immediately replaced by horror. I have forced myself to watch Earthlings and many other animal cruelty videos but I had to close my eyes several times while watching this one.
It’s one thing to kill an animal humanely (is there such a thing?) for our luxury fashion addictions but to cut up and skin an animal while it is alive and leave if for dead, sometimes for up to 4 days???….words just can’t explain.
I just checked all of my shoes and bags and realized I do have a clutch made from what looks like alligator skin- I got it from a styling gig. It’s getting donated TODAY.
WARNING: This video is EXTREMELY GRAPHIC!!! But, I still suggest you watch it. You don’t have to stop buying or throw anything out- but at least you’ll be conscious of how it came to be.
Vivienne Westwood Designs For Sigg?
Posted in fashion, reduce/reuse/recycle by thuy | Tags: Reusable Bottle, sigg, vivienne westwood
WHY?? I LOVE Vivienne Westood and I USED to love SIGG until they left a sour taste of BPA and deception in my mouth. Yesterday I read that the queen of punk teamed up with the lie tellers to design a new bottle and I thought I was going to have to go back on my word and buy a SIGG again (yes I’m a label whore). But now that I’ve seen the bottle, I see that’s not the case. Yawn.
Her SIGG bottle design inspired her FW10/11 catwalk menswear designs with the slogan Act Fast, Slow Down. Stop Climate Change.
I still got love for you VW- long live the Queen!

World Water Day: Clean Water For A Healthy World 3/22/10
Posted in environment, food/drink, health by thuy | Tags: brita, landfill, Nalgene, surfrider foundation, World Water DayToday is World Water Day so get ready for a flurry of water related posts.
Brita and Nalgene (the real BPA-free reusable bottle-cough*SIGG*cough) teamed up to create the FilteForGood pledge to reduce bottled water waste. Together, filtered water and a reusable bottle are a solution for going green at home and on the go.
Take the pledge and fill your reusable bottle instead of the landfill.
March 22 was first deemed World Water Day in 1993 by the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) as an international day of observance and action to draw attention to the role that freshwater plays in our world and lives. Today’s reality is that one in eight people in the world don’t have access to safe water, millions of women and children must still spend several hours a day collecting water from distant, often polluted sources, and 2.5 billion people live without a toilet.
To do something about that UN-Water has chosen Clean Water for a Healthy World as theme for World Water Day 2010. The overall goal of the World Water Day on 22 March 2010 campaign is to raise the profile of water quality at the political level so that water quality considerations are made alongside those of water quantity.

It’s A Wrap
Posted in fashion, los angeles, reduce/reuse/recycle by thuy | Tags: It's A Wrap
People often ask what we do with the clothes we purchase for videos, commercials and movies. From my experience, they’re usually turned into the production company. I know much of it is kept or gifted out but sometimes it gets to the point where you just don’t need another pair of jeans or a sweater set used on a mom character in a Fed Ex commercial.
Welcome to It’s a Wrap. It’s where the clothes used on actors end up and it’s open to the public. Most of the items are brand new or have only been worn once or twice. The clothes range from the Gap to various designer labels. I found an unworn pair of Gucci shoes for $250 and a kick ass Vivienne Westwood skirt for $75.
Definitely worth a visit.

H&M Organic Cotton Isn’t 100% Organic
Posted in fashion, organic by thuy | Tags: H&M, organic cotton
Over a year ago, H&M announced that they were introducing more organic cotton into their lines. I’ll admit- I buy from H&M (yes I contribute to fast fashion too) and I have purchased at least 3 tshirts based on the fact that I was sold on the whole organic cotton thing. Well, looks like someone pulled a little “Sigg has no BPA’s” white lie.
Lothar Kruse, a director of the independent testing laboratory Impetus in Bremerhaven, who examined the cotton fabrics claimed around “30% of the tested samples” contained genetically modified (GM) cotton. The head of the Indian agricultural authority, Apeda, Sanjay Dave, told the newspaper they were dealing with fraud on “a gigantic scale.”
The GM cotton found in the brand’s collections has been traced back to India which now supplies nearly half of the global supply of organic cotton. According to Organic Exchange figures – to be released shortly – India produced 61% of the total amount of organic cotton produced in 2008/09 with some 107,000 tonnes of fibre out of the total 175,113 tonnes grown worldwide.

It was CNN Heroes of 2009 and I got a quick reality check of people with real issues and the ones that are doing something to help.
Bartender Doc Hendley is providing clean water to communities worldwide. Through creative fundraising, his nonprofit Wine To Water has brought sustainable water systems to 25,000 people in five countries.
Jordan Thomas, 20, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, lost both of his legs in a boating accident in 2005. Since then, his Jordan Thomas Foundation has raised more than $400,000 to provide prosthetics for children in need.
Efren Peñaflorida gives Filipino youth an alternative to gang membership through education. His Dynamic Teen Company‘s 10,000 members have taught basic reading and writing to 1,500 kids living in the slums.

Gucci’s Signature Stripe Just Got Cooler. And Greener
Posted in environment, fashion, shopping by thuy | Tags: gucci, Rainforest Action Network, The Gucci Group
I never thought I would see this day but now that it’s here, let’s join arms in an interlocking G formation.
Gucci has joined forces with the Rainforest Action Network and decided to stop using paper from Indonesian rainforests and plantations as well as avoiding the suppliers Asia Pulp and Paper.
“Standing rainforests are not a luxury, they’re a necessity if the world wants to stop climate change,” said Mimma Viglezio, executive VP for global communications. “Our actions are lowering our own carbon footprint, but we hope that they will also raise awareness inside the fashion industry that it’s possible for our industry to make a difference for rainforests and for the climate.”
With this policy, they are ensuring that all paper categories used by the group, from printing paper to shopping bags, do not come from endangered forests.
The Gucci Group also owns Yves Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen so this small change is going to make a HUGE difference.

Posted in health by thuy | Tags: bpa, erectile dysfunction, impotence
Alright guys, it’s time for ya’ll to start paying attention to toxic chemicals too. This is what HealthDay Reporter had to say about the penis fun times killer:
Exposure to high levels of the controversial plastics chemical bisphenol A (BPA) significantly raised the risk of sexual dysfunction, including impotence and low sex drive, among Chinese factory workers, a new study has found.
The researchers stressed that the workers were exposed to BPA levels about 50 times higher than what most Chinese or Americans would be exposed to in everyday life.
Even so, they said the study adds to a growing body of research that shows that the ubiquitous chemical may be harmful to humans. BPA, used to make polycarbonate plastic (hard, clear plastic) and epoxy resin, is found in electronic and medical equipment, cars, sports safety equipment, and food and drink containers, including plastic bottles and the lining of cans.
