Posted in beauty, video/media by thuy | Tags: , ,

The Story of Cosmetics, examines the pervasive use of toxic chemicals in our everyday personal care products, from lipstick to baby shampoo.

Produced with Free Range Studios and hosted by Annie Leonard, the seven-minute film by The Story of Stuff Project reveals the implications for consumer and worker health and the environment, and outlines ways we can move the industry away from hazardous chemicals and towards safer alternatives. The film concludes with a call for viewers to support legislation aimed at ensuring the safety of cosmetics and personal care products.

Baby Smiley Gives Makeup Tutorial Says Eff The Ozone Layers

Posted in beauty, environment, eye candy, video/media, wtf by thuy | Tags: , , ,

Yes as in layers- she pluralized it, not me.

“Now, in order to get these razor blade sharp look you’ll get like 3 gallons of hairspray. Don’t even worry about the- what is it called? The Ozone Layers? Gotta have at least like 50 more layers left for the earth to like freeze over and explode.”

Sorry but I think this gem from Cops would’ve given a better tutorial. If you only watch one video today-make it this one. I’d quote my favorite parts, but it’d be the entire thing, so just press play.

I’m going to try this the next time I get pulled over by the po po’s.

GG&S Styles Coco Eco Magazine

Jen and I styled our first eco-friendly photo shoot for Coco Eco Magazine. Our subject was the stunning supermodel Josie Maran, who also has her own makeup line out that features organic ingredients and is free of fragrance, parabens, and petrochemicals. www.josiemarancosmetics.com

We pulled from Mr. Larkin, Elena Garcia and Puridee . We fell in love with the entire wardrobe, especially the pieces that were made of milk fibers.

You must visit www.cocoecomag.com. It’s a paperless online magazine, it’s free and it’s pretty bad ass as far as “green” publications go.

Congrats Anna on another great issue. Already looking forward to the next.

Bev. Hills Surgeon Uses Body Fat To Fuel Car

Posted in auto/transportation, beauty, health by thuy | Tags: , , ,

A Beverly Hills doctor is being investigated after patients filed complaints that he performed liposuction and extracted too much fat and left them disfigured. During the investigation it was founded that he was turning the fat he removed from patients into biodiesel that fueled his Ford SUV and his girlfriend’s Lincoln Navigator.

Fat, whether animal or vegetable, contains triglycerides that can be extracted and turned into diesel. Using fat to fuel cars might be environmentally friendly, but it’s definitely illegal in California to use human medical waste to power vehicles.

Would you be down to fuel your car with human fat if it were legal, safe and available?

Natural In New York

Posted in Logistics, beauty, reusable, shopping by jen

So I’ve been on an extended stay in NYC and aside from eating and shopping my way through the Big Apple, I’ve been impressed with all of the vegetarian restaurants, natural food markets and eco-friendly stores. On my way to C.O Bigelow I got sidetracked by Lifethyme Natural Market (healthy organic food downstairs, all-natural beauty emporium upstairs).

I was transfixed with all of the products that not only smelled great but didn’t contain all of the nasty toxic chemicals of traditional beauty products. I left with a kukui body butter, a super moisturizing face balm and citrus body wash and packed it all up in my organic reusable tote.

Chocolate Sun

Posted in animal rights, beauty, reduce/reuse/recycle by jen | Tags: , , , ,

Would you consider yourself sun-challenged? Do people think they’ve seen a ghost when you strip down to your bikini or swim trunks? If this sounds like you, have no fear… Chocolate Sun is here!!

Chocolate Sun is an all-natural, sunless tanning company located in Santa Monica, California. In traditional sunless tanning salons, the tanning formulas contain unnatural dyes, chemicals and preservatives. Chocolate Sun owner, Susie Hatton, worked with a chemist to create their own botanical formula enriched with herbs, vitamins and anti-oxidants.

Due to the all-natural formula, there is no nasty odor that is usually associated with sunless tanning. In addition, the salon will customize a tan fragrance by adding natural essential oils to the formula. A full body tan is $55, and discounts are offered if you buy a tanning package series.

They also offer a line of skin care called “Flowers” which is 100% chemical preservative free (grapefruit seed extract is used as a preservative). They use recycled packaging for the products, and do not test on animals.

LUSH Gets Naked… Woo Hoo!

Posted in beauty, environment by jen | Tags: , , ,

Nudity always gets our attention and Lush stores are banking on this theory to draw attention to their “package free” concept. Over 58% of Lush’s handmade line of cosmetics and beauty products are sold without packaging including bath balls, soap bars and cakes.

On August 27th they are encouraging their employees in over 24 U.S cities to show up for work in their birthday suits (well not totally naked cuz’ that would just be weird, but sporting their work apron and nothing else).

If you are in the Los Angeles, check out the Beverly Hills store, maybe they will be part of the “Go Naked” campaign. You might not find plastic packaging on the on the products, but we’re not promising that you won’t catch a glimpse (or two) of surgically enhanced, silicone-filled body parts. Hey… this is Los Angeles after all.

SmartShield To The Rescue

Posted in beauty, environment, health by jen | Tags: , , , , ,

I have to admit, I’m not as diligent about applying sunscreen as I should be, but I always slather all of my exposed body parts when I hit my (almost) daily hikes up either Fryman or Runyon Canyon.

The problem with most sunscreens is that they contain a whole gang of chemicals that most of us can’t even pronounce. This is where my latest discovery comes in: SmartShield Sun Protection. Not only is this sunscreen oil-free, PABA-free ( an organic compound believed to increase the risk of skin cancer) and DEET-free (a controversial insect repellent ingredient), it’s also eco-friendly!!

Smart Shield is biodegradable as well as marine friendly. In other words it won’t contaminate marine life or disrupt the natural marine habitat.

Check out the other eco-friendly products that SmartShield has to offer here.

Of course everyone is jumping on the green bandwagon. A favorite nail polish brand to many ladies, China Glaze has jumped on board too. The polish is not water based, nor is it chemical-free or green in anyway, but that didn’t stop them from coming out with an entire line of colors with titles such as Treehugger, Hybrid and Shower Together. Ok, I take that back, the box is made of recycled paper. Wow.

Sensual Seduction

Posted in beauty, shopping by jen

Ladies, are you looking for the fountain of youth along with the secrets to soft skin?? Unfortunately I think we’ll be waiting awhile to find the key to eternal youth, however I can give you some insight into silky, soft, sensual skin while using products with ingredients you can actually pronounce.

The first step is to drink tons of filtered water from your SIGG bottle (no, we’re not getting paid to endorse them, it’s just a great product that no greenie should be without).

Next EXFOLIATE in the shower with an organic sugar scrub. I’m feeling the one from Nature Girl; the products are free of synthetic fragrances and dye, they donate a percentage of after-tax profits to environmental causes, they don’t test on animals and the packaging is super cute, which is always a plus!

After you towel off, quickly apply a super MOISTURIZING LOTION while your skin is a little damp, preferably a body butter. Nature Girls’ shea body balm is made with African shea butter, organic California lavender water and healing organic herbs.

Last but not least, finish off with a DRY OIL body spray by Suki with with a range of organic herbal ingredients. Best of all this product is vegan.

This is my personal skin softening regimen, but for a whole range of beauty tips check out Gorgeously Green By Sophie Uliano with a foreword by Julia Roberts.

Pampering With A Purpose

Posted in baby/child, beauty, events by thuy

Last nights’ Opportunity Green event was an evening of pampering, networking and inspiration. Guest speakers really opened our eyes to the incredible dangers of chemicals in our beauty products. We heard a lot of discussion about the link between these products and cancer as well as a possible link to autism.

On a less serious note, there was tons of pampering for all of the lovely ladies…(and men)- Manicures with non-toxic Aquarella nail polish, mini-facials with Jurlique products and eyebrow waxing with Jenny Wax. Thuy and I opted out of those services, but snapped a quick flick on our way out with hostess of the evening, Karen Solomon (Co-founder and CEO of Opportunity Green). Congrats on a beautiful and inspiring evening!!

Love the Skin You Are In

Posted in beauty, organic by jen | Tags:

“Product junkie” doesn’t even begin to explain the obsession I have with all things that you can lube and lather all over your skin (keep your minds out of the gutter). I am a girlie girl to the fullest, so you can imagine what my makeup bag and vanity cabinet looks like. If it was invented and it smells good… then I own it. This obsession, however, is certainly not jibing with my newfound commitment to REDUCE, plus it’s been taking it’s toll on my pocketbook as well.

My new commitment is to donate the products I can’t use, to friends who are more than happy to give my sloppy seconds a new home. I’ve also made a promise to not buy any new products until I’ve finished every last drop of the ones I currently own, and then it’s strictly natural, eco-friendly products from here on out… Goodbye $225 La Mer face cream (yes I really spent that much on a 2 ounce pot).. hello Whole Foods Natural Beauty section…
