NY Bus Steez

Posted in auto/transportation, environment by jen | Tags: ,

Walked out of my girlfriend, Melissa’s apartment and we hopped on the bus which literally comes every 10-15 minutes. It had been raining off and on and we wanted to arrive at our destination dry and looking presentable. I’m definitely not mad at the New York bus system-convenient, efficient… and clean.

Google Transit

Posted in auto/transportation by jen | Tags: , ,

On Sept, 23rd, 2008, Google Transit launched a feature which makes it easier for New Yorkers and visitors to the city, to plan trips and locate destinations on one of the largest transit systems in the United States.

Google Transit incorporates the cities subway stops, bus routes and commuter trains to outlying areas with its map features including street views. Simply type in your departure point and your destination and voilà, everything you need is at your fingertips.

No more guessing if the train you hopped on is going to drop you off in Williamsburg instead of the West Village. There’s also a feature called “Google Translate” so the tool can be used for the city’s non-English speaking tourists, visitors or immigrants.

Volt Revealed

Posted in auto/transportation by thuy | Tags: , ,

The long awaited Chevy Volt made it’s debut in Detroit yesterday. It is engineered to run purely off an electric motor for up to 40 miles on a single charge from a home outlet. After that a four-cylinder gasoline engine kicks in to charge the battery. The car would get more than 50 mpg if the driver drains the battery and uses a tank of gas. But the company says most drivers commute less than 40 miles a day, so they’ll rarely use gasoline.

It’s supposed to be released sometime in 2010. Actual price for the car is yet to be announced but it’s rumored to be in the 40K range. I’m all for electric cars but I believe Toyota will be coming out with a plug in as well, in 2010, and I doubt it will cost as much as the Volt.

Chinatown Bus- All Aboard

Posted in Logistics, auto/transportation by thuy | Tags: , , , ,

My mom lives in San Jose, CA and the last two times she came to visit, she took a bus. Not the Greyhound though. She took the Chinatown bus. This budget transportation type even has its own wikipedia entry.

When she told me it costs $35.00 one way, I was in shock. And then she told me about the free snacks and drinks they provide, the two fifteen minute pit stops the bus takes, a clean restroom on board, AC and an arrival time in LA in less than 7 hours.

The picture above is from the site and it’s in Vietnamese but there are basically 3 pickup and drop off points in S. Cali and N. Cali. So basically if I were to catch the bus here in Chinatown at 10:45 a.m, I would arrive in SF at 6 p.m. Not too shabby considering Greyhound takes longer and costs more.

When I dropped off my mom, I stepped in to check it out and it’s like… being in Chinatown. Asians of all types and the chatter was kinda loud! I did get a few stares, but that was expected. It was like the “white girl” alarm went off when I entered. That said, I’d still be down to take this mass transit transpo, but not without my huge ass sunglasses on, an ipod and a book. Hit the thumbnail below to see the enlarged pic for time schedules and destinations.

www.xedohoang.com

Update- apparently there are buses similar to this in the following states: Virginia, New York, Philadelphia, Georgia and Tennessee to name a few. Go to Apex.com to get more info. I just noticed that the bus provides free Wi-Fi. Blogging while bussin’? Holla.

Big applause to the Democratic Convention for taking steps to green an event with an expected attendance of 100,000 people. Here’s a short list of how the DNC will be the most sustainable convention in modern political history.

  • Freewheelin: 1,000 bikes are available free of charge to volunteers and delegates. There will be bike stations surrounding the convention as well as around key hotels.
  • The buses that are assigned to transport the delegates and media to and from their hotels and the Pepsi center will run either on hybrid, alternative fuel or biodiesel.
  • Free parking near the convention for all hybrids.
  • There will be no fried food. Each meal will include “at least three of the following colors: red, green, yellow, blue/purple, and white.” At least 70% of ingredients will be organic or grown locally. Cups wll be made of biodegradable material.
  • The Pepsi Center, where the convention is to be held, has committed to offsetting its energy use with wind power.
Visit Ben Carmichael’s entry at the HuffPo to find out more ways the DNC is stepping their green game up. Also, the DNC has a blog worth checking out too. Yea, I know, who doesn’t nowadays?

Somebody Didn’t Get Their Dunkin’ Donuts Fix

Posted in Logistics, auto/transportation by thuy | Tags: , , , ,

There’s been a lot of controversey over this video that was taped by a tourist, showing an NYPD officer knocking a cyclist off his bike during a Critical Mass ride in NYC. Some say that the cop singled out and shoved the cyclist off his bike for no apparent reason while others argue that there was a civil complaint against a rider matching his description for violating traffic laws and weaving in and out of cars and that he was endangering drivers by his actions. The video only shows so much. What do you think?

I think I’m craving donut holes and an ice coffee from DD after watching this mess.

Electric Avenue

Posted in auto/transportation, environment by thuy

With gas nearing 5 bones a gallon and all this talk of it possibly doubling that in the next few years, I’m starting to rethink my longing for a fuel/electric hybrid. I’ve never been much of a sports car type of gal, but the Tesla Roadster is definitely seducing me with its lithium-ion battery pack as well as its sleek & sexy design. It goes 0 to 60 in under 4 seconds and Tesla claims it will get 220 miles of driving per charge. I’m not sure when this car is officially coming out, but we did happen to pass a Tesla showroom off of Santa Monica Blvd., recently so hopefully in the near future. Check out the video below for a sneak peek at the zero carbon emitting, soon to be on every mans wish list, dream car.

Sk8

Posted in auto/transportation, charitable causes, events by jen

It seems like everywhere you look there’s some kid with baggy pants (or I guess they’re wearing them kinda tight these days) whizzing past you on a skateboard. That coupled with stories of woe from my girlfriends and their experiences with said sk8er boi’s (sorry, i couldn’t resist the Avril Lavigne reference), has left me with the feeling that skaters are taking over the world. Ok, so that might be a wee bit of an exaggerration, but they are definitely taking over a day and making it their own…. June 21st is officially Go Skateboarding Day (GSD).

Not only is skateboarding a great form of alternative transportation (no nasty carbon emissions here), but GSD marks a day where skateboarding also contributes to a good cause. Started in 2004, Go Skateboarding Day (GSD) was conceived as an excuse for skateboarders to skip their obligations and just get out there and grind.

This holiday has gained momentum and popularity with each passing year, with over 32 countries participating and upwards of 2.5 million media impressions in past years. Check the GSD website and see how you can create your own event for that day and donate proceeds from the event to a charitable cause.

Can’t Say I Didn’t Try

Posted in auto/transportation by thuy

Last night I headed out to Little Tokyo for a L.A Market Week Wrap Party @ the Unitard Gallery, to meet up with friends, enjoy some music, & take in some art & fashion. Earlier in the day, I came up with the bright idea of taking the bus to the event, knowing that I would be meeting up with friends that I could catch a ride back into Hollywood with. I went online to Metro.net to plan my trip out. You type in your start point and your final destination and it tells you what stop to go to to catch the bus/train and where you’ll end up as well as the average travel time & how much you save in gas. Seemed simple enough.

I walked a block away to the stop on Melrose and Fairfax. It was 8:30 p.m. and after waiting 13 mintues, I couldn’t help but think, if I had been driving, I’d be there by now. A few moments after, the Metro arrived so there was no time to puss out. 36 minutes later, I arrived at my stop at Temple and First St. I got off and thats when the panic kicked in.

I didn’t know where the hell I was and don’t know my way around downtown that well. The streets were dead except for a few transients so I made a couple of frantic phone calls to get directions. I began to walk but at that point I wanted to get there fast and started to keep my eye out for a cab. That was a bust, and I ended up walking the rest of the way. In NY, 10 blocks is a breeze & fun, but in downtown LA, in the dead of night, not so much. When I finally made it there, I gave a few hugs and made a beeline for the bar, a tall drink was in order. I’m glad I tried it, but next time I head out to the concrete jungle, I’ll carpool with friends or drive in my own, trustworthy, carbon emitting vehicle and yes, I’m cringing with green guilt while typing this.

Get A Piece Of An American Classic

I drool over these bags every time I go into Whole Foods. Local designer, Kim White uses dead stock fabric intended for car interiors of the 70′s and 80′s. Each bag comes stamped with the year and make of the car it came from. Cloth made back then was so durable that you can be sure this will be in your collection for a lifetime. I was never big on classic muscle cars but I would rock that Camaro bag like no tomorrow. Click here to view the collection.

Woody Allen once said, “In Beverly Hills, they don’t throw their garbage away – they make it into television shows.” Well, Planet Green debuted today and I will gladly waste my time watching anything on this channel about garbage, composting, recycling, gadgets, food, drinks, cars, beauty, fashion…I’ll stop here but basically, it covers EVERYTHING under our beloved sun about going green and it’s on 24/7. The one show I really love is Alter Eco, with Adrien Grenier. It’s really informative and covers a lot of ‘green’ spots in L.A. It’s about time. Floss Angeles, RISE UP!

Get On The Bus

Posted in auto/transportation, environment by jen

Green Tip: Use Public Transportation. With gas prices just getting stupid high, the good ol’ bus system is literally becoming a realistic alternative. I know the association with taking the bus in L.A isn’t exactly in line with some who are accustomed to rolling in ‘lacs and ‘lades (that’s Cadillacs and Escalades to those of you who aren’t familiar with the urban dictionary). But with the crazy amount of damage being done to the environment with the toxic carbon emissions from all the cars on the road, it’s an option to be strongly considered.

Plan your trip by hitting up one or more of the various public transportation options here in L.A- LADOT or Metro to name a few. It will be gentler on the environment, not to mention your pocket book. Who knows, one of your trips might find you you squashed up next to the future love of your life!

Why Good Girls Love Bad Boys

Posted in auto/transportation, environment by thuy | Tags: ,

Jen and I have been on a mission to ride our bikes as an alternative form of transportation, but honestly, we’re a bit skerrd. Last month, I witnessed a guy get smacked off his bike by a car, and since we’ve been looking into bike riding safety in LA, it’s quite discouraging.

The members of CRIMANIMALZ took to the streets on May 9th. They videotaped their crew of about 30 cyclists getting onto the I-10 Fwy, during rush hour and riding almost two miles to the 405 Fwy. Their message: RIDE A BIKE, YOU’D BE HOME BY NOW. They are looking for city officials to make bicycle safety a priority, not only through the creation of safe and easy places to ride, but also as a means of transportation. A dangerous statement, not to mention illegal, but one with great intent. The city of angels needs to wake up and smell the smog!

Note: GGS digs masked, renegade, bicycle boys! Holla at yo’ ride or die chics!

Do Your Part

Posted in auto/transportation, environment, reduce/reuse/recycle by jen

We all want to play our part in making the earth a better place, but many of us don’t know where to start. Here are a few simple tips that require very little effort on your part, but will have an enormous effect on the environment.

  • USE REUSABLE BAGS- An estimated 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide each year. Check out stylish options such as Baggus and Envirosax and make a statement while you’re doing your part to save the planet.
  • BUY LOCAL AND ORGANIC FOOD- Most food travels over 1500 miles from “farm to fork”. Buying locally grown food reduces the energy spent on food shipping. Organic farmers also use less fossil fuel and release fewer greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere.
  • DITCH BOTTLED WATER- Although most plastic bottles are recylable, the first “R” of the “3 R’s” (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) is to Reduce! Switch from single use plastic water bottles to a SIGG bottle or a Kleen Kanteen.
  • USE NATURAL CLEANSERS- Traditional cleaning products are loaded with toxic chemicals that are horrible for you and for the environment. Make the switch to eco-friendly products offered by companies such as Method, Seventh Generation and Begley’s Best.
  • WALK, BIKE, TAKE THE BUS- We all know how much toxic air pollutants are emitted from our cars. Limit your time spent in your car and take the time to use other forms of transportation such as walking, biking, public transportation etc.

Palm Trees, Bumpin’ Music & Good Times.

This past weekend my girl Jen hired me to help with the New Era gifting suite in Palm Desert, CA. Hmm.. gifting hats to artists, sitting poolside with friends, and drinking in the desert heat while listening to dj’s spin? It was a no-brainer and another ‘best time ever” to add to the books. The big bonus was being able to rent any car of my choice. Apparently the Prius is a hot commodity because I had to call at least 8 different rental services before tracking one down.

We stayed at the Mod Resort, which was rented out by FADER/Boosted for their daytime pool parties. I got to take a peek at Boosted’s eco-friendly, leather free line, consisting of dope accessory bags and colorful headphones. Holla for the hook up on my new fanny packs from the Mad Steez & Claw Money collabos.

I wasn’t planning on making it to the actual festival but Raymond Roker from URB magazine hooked us up with last minute tickets- THANKS RAY! Not only did we carpool to the festival, but we lessened our carbon footprint (not by choice) thanks to our cabbie, who dropped us off at the wrong entrance, forcing us to walk for at least 2 miles to get to the fairgrounds. I would’ve loved to have seen the Global Inheritance set up, but unfortunately I missed it because they had already shut down for the night. Catching the end of Portishead and half of Princes’ set was AMAZING! We about lost it when Sheila E. came on and performed every girls favorite 80′s song, “The Glamorous Life.” Already looking forward to next year.

It’s Going To Be A Scorcher!

Posted in Logistics, auto/transportation, environment, events, reduce/reuse/recycle, reusable by thuy | Tags: , , ,

If you’re heading out past the windmills to Coachella this weekend to bake in the sun and party like its 1999, be sure to keep your eye out for the 45 ft. tall wind powered clock stationed at the main entrance. Global Inheritance will be present once again with cell phone charging bikes, a solar powered DJ booth, and eco-friendly screen printing on bamboo and organic cotton to spread the word on sustainable fashion. They will also do a live conversion of vegetable oil into biodiesel, and demonstrate the pros and cons of producing and using biodiesel to fuel cars and other fossil fuel-guzzling items.

I was late on learning about this but Coachella teamed up with Amtrak for the Coachella Express. It leaves today from the Union Station in downtown L.A and will make its way to Indio, where they’ve created a temporary platform for the festival-goers to be picked up and shuttled to the campgrounds. It leaves again on Monday for the return trip. Damn, door to door service and it’s FREE! Can’t beat that with a bat.

Don’t forget to wear your (organic/paraben-free/not tested on animals) sunblock and stay hydrated. You’ll be glad you did once it gets dark and you’re trying to have enough stamina to catch MIA, Jack Johnson, Prince or any of the other 129 performances. Also, keep your eyes open for the stands that will be exchanging a new bottle of water for every 10 empty ones turned in. Go one step further to reduce, instead of recycle, and bring a Kleen Kanteen.

In a continued celebration of Earth Day festivities, we decided to hit up the Barracuda store (on Melrose Avenue in L.A) for a launch party in honor of legendary graffiti artist, Claw Money’s, latest project. She has teamed up with the good people over at Boosted Mobile’s Artist Series and created a line of low toxicity, vegan approved, artificial leather mobile carrying cases. The collection includes fanny packs, laptop cases and backpacks which come equipped with nifty pockets for your blackberry, ipod, iphone etc.

We shopped around, had a cocktail, and bumped into man about town, not to mention photographer to the famous (and to the not so famous), Mark Hunter (aka The Cobrasnake). We were stoked to find out that he doesn’t own a car, he bikes to photography gigs, and created a line of recyclable totes. Yay Cobrasnake!!!

Not much has changed since that Missing Persons song dropped in the 80′s. But today in honor of car free day, Jen and I took the bus from the Fairfax District to the Earth Day Festival on Wilshire Blvd. One of our “bus mates” was none other than Andy Lipkis, founder and president of TreePeople. If you don’t know about this guy, time to get schooled. TreePeople is a non profit organization that has been serving the Los Angeles area for over three decades, whose vision is “to inspire the people of Los Angeles to take personal responsibility for the urban forest.” Their staff and volunteers have gone on to plant more than two million trees in Los Angeles and have developed one of the nation’s largest environmental education programs. We’re looking forward to planting our first tree with Andy in the near future.

The rest of the day consisted of meeting up with friends, visiting various booths and enjoying a beautiful day in the sun.

There will be lots to learn, see and do, including a performance from Michael Franti from Spearhead- all for the loving price of 0 dollars and 0 cents- hope to see you there. HAPPY EARTH DAY!

Fly The Friendly Skies

If you travel frequently, air travel, unfortunately contributes a disproportionate amount of greenhouse gases to your personal climate change footprint. But, if you happen to be flying on Virgin America between April 19 through the 22nd, you can let go of some of that green guilt thanks to Virgin and Method cleaning products.

The two San Francisco-based companies are pledging $3 for every guest flying on Virgin America on Earth Day, April 22. Each guest will have a pledge made on their behalf to support environmental restoration projects through the California State Parks Foundation. Along with the pledge, every flier on every Virgin America flight on April 22 will receive Method’s chic reusable “Plastic Bag Rehab” tote with the company’s new compostable cleaning surface wipes made from 100 percent bamboo. Damnit, why couldn’t my trip to San Francisco be this weekend instead of next? You can find out more about Virgin’s and Method’s Earth Day activities here.

Whenever you travel be sure to offset your carbon emissions from air travel. It’s easy, cheap and can be done online faster than it will take you to brew your fair trade, organic cup of coffee…here are a few sites.
