Obama makes the green section of my heart go pitty pat and for that, I thank him. I raise my glass yet again in honor of all the days to come with him in the White/Green House. Salud!

Meat Was Murder For Moz At Coachella
Posted in animal cruelty, boys we heart, celeb, events, food/drink, music by thuy | Tags: animal cruelty, coachella, meat, meat is murder, morrissey, moz, mozzersThe video clip above is of Morrissey walking off the stage during his set at Coachella because the smell of cooking meat offended him.
Morrissey gave his quote of the year at Coachella just before he walked off the stage during his song “Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others”: “I can smell burning flesh and I hope to God it’s human,” he said, smelling the barbeque sold by festival vendors.
To his credit, Moz did return to the stage and continue his set, giving the explanation that “the smell of burning animals is making me sick. I just couldn’t bear it.”
Morrissey usually has a strict ban on meat products at his gigs, but at festivals, anything goes.
Homie is SERIOUS about his hatred for meat. I don’t blame him. The smell of seafood makes me want to puke through my nostrils.
In other news, he was set to play the next night in my old stomping grounds of San Francisco. He cancelled his show only to be seen later chilling at the DNA Lounge. Oh that Mozzers, always so dramatic. We wouldn’t have it any other way. But I would have been PISSED as hell if I was supposed to be attending that show and he cancelled!

Van Jones Pops His Green Collar For Obama
Posted in boys we heart, environment, news, politickin' by thuy | Tags: environment, green collar economy, green for all, green jobs, jobs, obama, van jonesI was totally doing the YES dance after learning that one of the “boys we heart” has made it into Obama’s camp!
Author and activist Van Jones will be a special adviser for green jobs, enterprise and innovation in the Obama administration.
Nancy Sutley, chairwoman of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, said in a release Monday that Jones will start work next week to help direct the administration’s efforts to create jobs and help the environment. Sutley said Jones will work on “vulnerable communities.”
Jones founded Green for All, a national organization that promises environmentally friendly jobs to help lift people out of poverty. He wrote the New York Times best-seller “The Green Collar Economy.”
Where can I apply to become Van’s “Tool Time” girl?? That position has my name written all over it. I have references.

White House Chef Thinks Green And Local
Posted in boys we heart, food/drink, politickin' by thuy | Tags: chef, obama, organic, sam kass, sustainable, white houseAnd homeboy is my new flavor of the week! Read more about him below while I go research how I can volunteer at his soup kitchen.
Dinners at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue might be a little greener these days: the new White House assistant chef, Sam Kass, is an environmentally conscious University of Chicago graduate who founded a home cooking service that focuses on ingredients from local farms.
Kass, 28, the Obama family’s personal chef in Chicago, will assist White House executive chef Cristeta Comerdord, a holdover from the Bush White House. Kass, who grew up in Chicago, trained at a Michelin-starred restaurant in Europe before going to work at Avec, a Chicago wine bar that specializes in Mediterranean food.
Avec chef-owner Paul Kahan has said, “The cool thing about Sam is that he’s very active, very involved with issues that relate to food. His goal has always been to improve the world from a food standpoint.”
After leaving Avec, Kass founded Inevitable Table, which according to the Web site promotes “a healthy lifestyle that focuses on the quality and flavor of food to encourage good eating habits.”
Score one for Locavores.

Boys We Heart: Van Jones
Posted in boys we heart, environment, home, solar, sustainability by thuy | Tags: green collar jobs, police brutality, prison, van jonesVan Jones is an activist working to combine solutions to social inequality and environmental destruction. He founded the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, which promotes alternatives to violence and incarceration, in 1996. He has won many honors including a Reebok Human Rights Award and an Ashoka Fellowship, and has served on the boards of many groups, including: the National Apollo Alliance, Social Ventures Network, Rainforest Action Network and Bioneers. The City of Oakland has adopted the Ella Baker Center’s “Green Jobs Corps” proposal, and Van is pushing to create the first-ever Green Enterprise Zone in Oakland.
Excuse me, I have some googling to do..gotta find out if Mr. Jones is married.
*UPDATE: Damnit, he’s married! I was ready to pack my bags and head back to my old stomping grounds in Oakland. Why are all the good ones taken???

A Birthday Boy We Heart: Graham Hill
Posted in boys we heart, charitable causes, food/drink by thuy | Tags: charity, charity water, donate, graham hill, treehugger.com, water, wellsWe have a huge heart-on for this multilingual, athletic hottie that started the mac daddy of all green blogs, Treehugger.com. Graham Hill celebrates his 38th birthday today and he asking his friends, family and readers to give a tax deductible donation to Charity:Water in his name, in lieu of gifts.
More than 75% of people in Ethiopia do not have safe drinking water. Charity:Water is a non-profit orginization that helps to bring safe, clean drinking water to people in developing nations by drilling wells to underground water that is safe to drink.
Many of us receive useless gifts for our birthdays. Huge props to Graham for forgoing this tradition to help people who are in need. Go here to give your gift, which will be matched for every dollar donated.
Happy Skeetday Graham. GG&S ♥‘s you long time.

Shepard Fairey Gives Us HOPE
Posted in Peeps We Rep, art, boys we heart by jen | Tags: hope, obama, planet green alter eco, shepard faireyPlease excuse the Obama overload, but hey when you’re inspired, you gotta ride the wave.
Another super inspiring boy we heart is the legendary and super-talented Shepard Fairey. His artistic portrayal of Obama through his iconic “HOPE” posters have swept the nation, and even garnered a stamp of approval from Barack himself.
We also love Shepard beacause he is a doting father of two, a devoted husband, and a ‘greenie’ who recently had an eco-friendly makeover on his daughters’ nursery, which was featured on Planet Green’s Alter Eco.
Check out the short clip above in which he talks about his involvement in the Obama Campaign. Preach Brother!!

Boys We Heart: Joaquin Phoenix
Posted in animal cruelty, animal rights, boys we heart, celeb, environment, film/tv/print, food/drink, health, pets by thuy | Tags: animal rights, food, joaquin phoenix, petsThis Golden Globe and Grammy Award winning actor, director, producer and social activist makes my heart go pitty pat. On Jan 2nd, 2008, I fell head over heels for Joaquin after watching a movie called “Earthlings.” It wasn’t his dreamy blue eyes or the sexy scar above his lip that did me in because he doesn’t even appear in the film. It was his voice. Over the course of two years, Joaquin worked on the narration for EARTHLINGS which is a feature length documentary about humanity’s absolute dependence on animals (for pets, food, clothing, entertainment, and scientific research) but also illustrates our complete disrespect for these so-called “non-human providers.”
With an in-depth study into pet stores, puppy mills and animals shelters, as well as factory farms, the leather and fur trades, sports and entertainment industries, and finally the medical and scientific profession, EARTHLINGS uses hidden cameras and never before seen footage to chronicle the day-to-day practices of some of the largest industries in the world, all of which rely entirely on animals for profit.
I commend Joaquin for being the voice to the ones that do not have one. It was a rude awakening for me, but one that was needed and as my friend Raymond said recently, ” I would rather embrace truth than hide from it.” You don’t have to turn vegan or stop wearing leather, but if you watch this movie it may open your eyes to what you have been putting in and on your body as well as the injustice these animals are served for our own pleasures and comfort. I bought the DVD so I can lend it to friends that are interested in watching it, but it is also available to watch online here.
Thanks Karen, once again. xx

Boys We Heart: Raymond Roker (Krishna)
Posted in Peeps We Rep, boys we heart, environment, food/drink, reduce/reuse/recycle, sustainability by thuyYesterday was my good friend Raymond’s birthday and I was determined to make it a green celebration. He’s the founder of one of my favorite publications, Urb magazine, a long-time vegetarian, a passionate animal lover and an all around great guy. I spent a good part of my day on a mission to find him the perfect eco-friendly gift. I was ecstatic when I found this t-shirt since Raymond is known to bike around town. My love for Sigg bottles run so deep that I’ve decided to gift them from now on in the hopes that the person receiving it will give up water bottles too.
For dinner we opted for Akasha, (9543 Culver Blvd, Culver City, 90232) a newly opened restaurant in Culver City that has a very high standard of sustainability. Their bar highlights fresh juice cocktails and organic spirits, beer and wine. Their kitchen sources from farms, ranches and fisheries that are guided by the principles of sustainability. Some of the materials used throughout the restaurant are natural ceramic tiles made from sand, reclaimed barn wood and local limestone.
We indulged in great conversation over a bottle of organic wine and enjoyed our meals knowing that this restaurant was doing their part to make the earth a better place. Click here to see a list of all their incredible green practices.
Happy Birthday Raymond! xx

Beware of Barracudas and Cobrasnakes!
Posted in auto/transportation, board/bikes, boys we heart, events, fashion, los angeles, reduce/reuse/recycle, tech/gadgets by jen | Tags: mark the cobrasnakeIn a continued celebration of Earth Day festivities, we decided to hit up the Barracuda store (on Melrose Avenue in L.A) for a launch party in honor of legendary graffiti artist, Claw Money’s, latest project. She has teamed up with the good people over at Boosted Mobile’s Artist Series and created a line of low toxicity, vegan approved, artificial leather mobile carrying cases. The collection includes fanny packs, laptop cases and backpacks which come equipped with nifty pockets for your blackberry, ipod, iphone etc.
We shopped around, had a cocktail, and bumped into man about town, not to mention photographer to the famous (and to the not so famous), Mark Hunter (aka The Cobrasnake). We were stoked to find out that he doesn’t own a car, he bikes to photography gigs, and created a line of recyclable totes. Yay Cobrasnake!!!

Walkin’ In L.A….. Nobody Walks In L.A.
Posted in auto/transportation, boys we heart, environment, events, food/drink, los angeles by thuy | Tags: andy lipkis, los angeles, treepeople, wilshire earth day festivalNot much has changed since that Missing Persons song dropped in the 80′s. But today in honor of car free day, Jen and I took the bus from the Fairfax District to the Earth Day Festival on Wilshire Blvd. One of our “bus mates” was none other than Andy Lipkis, founder and president of TreePeople. If you don’t know about this guy, time to get schooled. TreePeople is a non profit organization that has been serving the Los Angeles area for over three decades, whose vision is “to inspire the people of Los Angeles to take personal responsibility for the urban forest.” Their staff and volunteers have gone on to plant more than two million trees in Los Angeles and have developed one of the nation’s largest environmental education programs. We’re looking forward to planting our first tree with Andy in the near future.
The rest of the day consisted of meeting up with friends, visiting various booths and enjoying a beautiful day in the sun.
