Fairfax District Goodwill Grand Opening
Posted in los angeles, reduce/reuse/recycle, shopping, tech/gadgets by thuy | Tags: e-waste, fairfax district, goodwill, i love my hood, recycle clothes, reduce/reuse/recycleI’m so excited about the Goodwill that just opened up down the street. I dropped in on the morning of the grand opening and the place was bumping. Balloons, music, families, hipsters and contests.
One thing I noticed was there weren’t any tags on the clothes. Boo-ya! That means not wasting millions of paper price tags as well as the plastic tags they use to connect the price tags to the clothes. They have signs that feature a flat price for the different styles of clothing. Brilliant.
I talked to the manager on my way out and he informed me that they do free e-waste recycling too. You just pull up to their back parking lot and drop it off.
Guess what I did last night? Started going through my stuff to donate and all my dead electronics to recycle. Clearing clutter feels so good.
Once again, I love my hood!
It’s on Beverly/Hayworth. One block west of Fairfax.

Rock Row: Eagle Rock Townhomes
Posted in home, los angeles by thuy | Tags: eagle rock, LEED, rock row, townhomesThese fifteen fee-simple townhomes finally provide a realistic opportunity for quality homeownership. Priced from $463,000 to $529,000, Angelenos can now afford sustainable, sizable homes of superior quality. Located in the historic Eagle Rock neighborhood, these brand new homes are 40% larger than the typical bungalow home for competitive prices.
Each unit has a series of decks and balconies arranged to guarantee privacy, while affording the occupant abundant usable outdoor space. Reacting and adjusting to its neighbor, the townhouses each have their own character while fitting into the whole.
GREEN BUILDING. This project will also be the first Small Lot Subdivision in the City of Los Angeles to be LEED Certified under the new LEED for Homes program, incorporating many environmentally conscious features, ranging from a permeable driveway of grass pavers to instant hot water heaters. LEED Certification also guarantees excellent indoor air quality, very low utility bills, and an energy efficient and sustainable design and construction. An ecological viewpoint is carried from schematic design to the finishes and fixtures.
NOT CONDOMINIUMS. Rock Row is one of the earliest projects to be entitled under the new LA City Small Lot Subdivision Ordinance. This ordinance encourages homeownership through smart growth practices. These homes are structurally independent from the foundation to the roof; these are not condominiums, there is no HOA, and the owner actually owns the land.
I want to live there!
Open house this Sunday from 1-4 p.m. For more renderings, floor plans and info, click here.

89,459 More Single Men Than Women In Los Angeles
Posted in los angeles by thuy | Tags: green dating sites, los angeles, online dating, singleWTF? Can someone tell me what part of the world Cupid is living in because we need to recruit him and his bow and arrow to the city of angels STAT! Might as well send over Aphrodite, Dionysus and an industrial sized water tower, filled with a cocktail mix of Dopamine’s & Phernomes for that matter, we need all the help we can get.
Those blue dots represent the areas where single men out number single women. The largest cluster is hovering over my hood and it comes as no surprise since it always seems to be a topic of conversation within my circle of friends of both genders. The one suggestion that always seems to follow is online dating. We haven’t quite gotten to that point yet, but if you’re interested in finding a mate that shares the same beliefs/passions that you do, try some of the links below.
Click on the thumbnail to see the enlarged view of the map. As soon as I hit the publish button for this post, I’ll be studying it myself to plan my move. Hmm… Ft. Worth, TX or Ft. Lauderdale, FL? Forget it. Jen, see you at my place at 8 for another marathon of Planet Earth. Don’t forget the Breyers.

I checked out their two previous events, one at the Smart House in Santa Monica and the most recent in a beautiful residence in Bel Air, where I acquired my first Sigg bottle in a (reusable) gift bag. Both parties provided great music, a cool artsy vibe, beautiful people, open bar, food, and of course, it was all for a good cause.
This event will be benefiting the Greenworld Campaign and Ocean Revolution. There will be guest speakers, a live painting by the artist Carlos Vera, a fashion show by Kama & Kucoon, and so much more. Several dj’s will be spinning over the course of both days but headlining will be my dear friend, Marques Wyatt from Deep on Saturday and King Brit on Sunday. Click here to get all the details.
Unfortunately, I won’t be there this time, but please have a nice, cold, stiff, organic one for me… or two… or three…

Posted in auto/transportation, board/bikes, boys we heart, events, fashion, los angeles, reduce/reuse/recycle, tech/gadgets by jen | Tags: mark the cobrasnakeIn a continued celebration of Earth Day festivities, we decided to hit up the Barracuda store (on Melrose Avenue in L.A) for a launch party in honor of legendary graffiti artist, Claw Money’s, latest project. She has teamed up with the good people over at Boosted Mobile’s Artist Series and created a line of low toxicity, vegan approved, artificial leather mobile carrying cases. The collection includes fanny packs, laptop cases and backpacks which come equipped with nifty pockets for your blackberry, ipod, iphone etc.
We shopped around, had a cocktail, and bumped into man about town, not to mention photographer to the famous (and to the not so famous), Mark Hunter (aka The Cobrasnake). We were stoked to find out that he doesn’t own a car, he bikes to photography gigs, and created a line of recyclable totes. Yay Cobrasnake!!!

Walkin’ In L.A….. Nobody Walks In L.A.
Posted in auto/transportation, boys we heart, environment, events, food/drink, los angeles by thuy | Tags: andy lipkis, los angeles, treepeople, wilshire earth day festivalNot much has changed since that Missing Persons song dropped in the 80′s. But today in honor of car free day, Jen and I took the bus from the Fairfax District to the Earth Day Festival on Wilshire Blvd. One of our “bus mates” was none other than Andy Lipkis, founder and president of TreePeople. If you don’t know about this guy, time to get schooled. TreePeople is a non profit organization that has been serving the Los Angeles area for over three decades, whose vision is “to inspire the people of Los Angeles to take personal responsibility for the urban forest.” Their staff and volunteers have gone on to plant more than two million trees in Los Angeles and have developed one of the nation’s largest environmental education programs. We’re looking forward to planting our first tree with Andy in the near future.
The rest of the day consisted of meeting up with friends, visiting various booths and enjoying a beautiful day in the sun.

The Little Seed That Could
Posted in baby/child, los angeles, shopping by jen | Tags: children's clothing, los angeles, organic, the little seedMy mid-80′s style icon Soleil Moon Frye (aka Punky Brewster) still has one foot in the fashion game, but this time we’re talking baby fashion. Along with good friends Beth Birkett and Paige Tolmach, Soleil has opened an eco-friendly baby store in Los Angeles, called The Little Seed.
Frustrated with the lack of non-toxic, organic baby toys, she took matters into her own hands and created an environmentally conscious baby emporium. I’m sure she’ll have plenty of business with Hollywood’s latest baby boom. New mommies Jessica Alba and Halle Berry have apparently decked out their nurseries using sustainable furniture and non-toxic products.

Is Cru For You??
Posted in food/drink, los angeles by jen | Tags: cru, los angeles, vegetarianAfter numerous glowing reviews of Cru restaurant in Silverlake, CA, I decided to grab a girlfriend and make my way over there for a post-workout bite to eat.. The first thing that struck me about Cru, was the cozy intimate vibe of the place. Cru is a vegetarian, raw food restaurant that offers a wide style of cuisine and translates these diverse elements into flavorful gourmet offerings.
I started my meal with an appetizer of flaxseed crackers served with cashew cheese and fig paste. It was palatable but nothing revolutionary. My main course was the garden salad with a chili lime vinaigrette. As basic as this sounds, it was extremely flavorful and chock full of delicious organic vegetables. My dining partner started with the treviso bruschetta, which was essentially a lettuce wrap filled with kale and pinenuts, and had the caesar salad as an entree… both were excellent. I highly recommend this restaurant, not only for the health conscious food, but also for the beautiful ambiance and friendly service…
