A Little Pain Never Hurt Nobody

Posted in charitable causes, environment, sexy ting tings, sustainability by thuy | Tags: , , ,

From the semi-pornographic website to the dark, den-like boutiques and kinky salons teaching subjects such as the art of Japanese Rope Bondage, Coco de Mer is on a mission to bring sexy back. But not at the cost of the environment. Sam Roddick’s boutique has quickly come to represent the height of inspired ethical and sensual chic for the globally, socially conscious and the sex loving among us.

Coco de Mer’s Rubberwood spanking paddle is handcrafted by a fair trade project in India. The wood comes from sustainable forests and produced in India in an ethical manner with good working conditions and pay. Rubberwood is prized for being eco-friendly because it comes from rubber trees that have already been cut down after their prime latex-producing years are over.

Coco de Mer likes to ‘give back’ and is in partnership with international charity, the Helen Bamber Foundation, which is devoted to assisting survivors of conflict and torture. Coco de Mer is also supporting the launch of the Women’s Project, a charitable enterprise dedicated to the rehabilitation of women whose human rights, health and social care needs have been severely compromised through war, politics, religion and sexual slavery.

Pauly Shore and a whole gang of other comedians had us cracking up. A great time for a great cause!!

Gucci For Unicef

Posted in celeb, charitable causes, shopping by jen | Tags: , ,

For it’s 4th annual campaign to benefit Unicef, Gucci will be releasing a white version of its Tattoo Heart Collection.

25% of the sale will be donated to Unicef and its cause of children’s rights around the world. The bag will be available Nov. 19th, 2008- Jan. 31, 2009 in Gucci stores worldwide.

Rihanna will be featured in the ad campaign.

I’m not sure how much this piece of arm candy costs, but I’m sure it’s steep…. and although it’s for a good cause, I’ll be making my donation directly to the Unicef foundation.

Times are tough and the last thing I need is a new handbag (especially not a leather one).

Halle Gets Twisted

Posted in celeb, charitable causes, environment, everybody's doing it by jen | Tags: , , , ,

Ever since the birth of her daughter Nahla, we’ve been noticing Halle Berry making the green transition. Her baby nursery was made with environmentally friendly materials and now we see her toting an eco-friendly yoga mat to class. This Yogamatic’s mat is made out of biodegradable materials and a portion of the proceeds go to Global Green.

You can also customize the mat with your own images. I wonder if Halle screened a pic of her hottie Calvin Klein model boyfriend on hers…

They have also come together with FEED Projects, and are donating proceeds from the purchase of a Rugby FEED Foundation bag, to support children in developing countries. Get Involved.

Richie-Madden Children’s Foundation

Posted in baby/child, celeb, charitable causes by jen | Tags: , , , , ,

I love to see celebrities using their fame for a good cause. Nicole Richie and her main squeeze, Good Charlotte frontman, Joel Madden, have made donating to a charitable cause super easy. They are looking to raise $25,000 to build a state of the art playground for kids at the Beyond Shelter in L.A.

If you care to donate, all you have to do is text “CHILD” to 90999 and a $5 donation will be made. Hey, if you can pick up the phone to vote for the next American Idol or Dancing With The Stars candidate, then you can definitely put your digits to good use and donate to a worthwhile cause.

Celebs 4 Whatever It Takes

Posted in celeb, charitable causes, reusable, shopping by jen | Tags: , , , , , ,

My New York eco-friendly shopping saga continues. I stopped in at Urban Outfitters looking for a black pleather skirt that I had seen online. No luck with the skirt but walked out with 2 reusable tote bags (it’s becoming an addiction), designed by various celebrities for WhateverItTakes.org

Kanye West, Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney and Gwen Stefani were among the celebs who lent their designs for the cause.

When you purchase a bag ($38) you are helping the 21st Century Leaders Foundation a charitable organization which funds key global development causes, including poverty alleviation, environmental conservation and the protection of children.

Net royalty proceeds generated by the Whatever It Takes Campaign go to the 21st Century Leaders Foundation, to fund selected charitable projects including those nominated by the celebrity artist.

I copped the bags designed by Kanye and Stella to add to my growing collection. Get out and cop yours!

A Birthday Boy We Heart: Graham Hill

Posted in boys we heart, charitable causes, food/drink by thuy | Tags: , , , , , ,

We have a huge heart-on for this multilingual, athletic hottie that started the mac daddy of all green blogs, Treehugger.com. Graham Hill celebrates his 38th birthday today and he asking his friends, family and readers to give a tax deductible donation to Charity:Water in his name, in lieu of gifts.

More than 75% of people in Ethiopia do not have safe drinking water. Charity:Water is a non-profit orginization that helps to bring safe, clean drinking water to people in developing nations by drilling wells to underground water that is safe to drink.

Many of us receive useless gifts for our birthdays. Huge props to Graham for forgoing this tradition to help people who are in need. Go here to give your gift, which will be matched for every dollar donated.

Happy Skeetday Graham. GG&S ‘s you long time.

One of the recent stops in his fabulous life was as a guest at the Toronto launch of Kate Hudson and David Babaii’s WildAid cruelty-free hair care line.

KFC’s Secret Recipe Revealed

Posted in animal cruelty, charitable causes, food/drink, health by thuy | Tags: , , , , , , ,

Moby is an advocate for a variety of causes, working with MoveOn and The Humane Society, among others. He’s also been a vegetarian for over 16 years and you can clearly see how he feels about the meat industry in his video, Disco Lies. Get your dancing shoes on.

*CRINGE* I was raised on KFC (but not in a Britney Spears way) and it was only up until a few years ago that I gave it up. I came across the video that was narrated by Pamela Anderson, showing the abuse that went down in the KFC plants. I was so disgusted and in disbelief that I had been eating diseased, hormone pumped, infected limbs from animals that had been raised their entire lives in cramped quarters as well as tortured and beaten.

I don’t miss it one bit, but I do miss their coleslaw. I could eat an entire side of that coleslaw with a biscuit and call it a day. Damn you Colonel Sanders!

Wrap Up For A Good Cause

Posted in charitable causes, fashion, shopping by thuy | Tags: , , , ,

Tom’s brand is famous for their laid back styles that are comfortable and affordable. They’re also known to donate a pair of shoes to a child in need in different areas around the world, for every pair that is purchased. To date, since the Santa Monica based company opened in 2006, they have donated over 60,000 pairs. For 2008, they had planned to donate up to 200,000.

Their newest addition is the wrap boot, inspired by the tradition of Argentine Polo and the brightly colored leg wraps of their champion horses. I don’t like to promote anything that glorifies the use of animals as entertainment but because of the brand and the goodness they’ve done, I’ll have to make an exception. Check out the the behind the scenes pictures for the campaign from The Cobrasnake.

Let’s Beat This Bitch

Unfortunately almost everyone I know, including myself, has had a loved one affected by cancer. This is a deadly disease that needs to be banished…completely.

On Friday September 15th, in an unprecedented move, all the major networks, ABC, NBC and CBS will devote a commercial-free prime-time hour to the fight against cancer. More than a dozen of the world’s most accomplished female musicians will premiere a charity single titled “Just Stand Up” to support the “Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C)” philanthropic initiative.

The single, which will feature artists such as Ciara, Sheryl Crow, Rihanna and Fergie, amongst others, will be available to purchase exclusively on the itunes store starting September 2, 2008.

Hook your ipod up with some of this goodness and do your part in ending cancer’s reign as a leading cause of death.

Everybody’s Doing It

Posted in celeb, charitable causes, environment, everybody's doing it by jen | Tags: , , , , ,

I’m definitely taking this charitable display of philanthropy on Naomi Campbell’s part, with a grain of salt. For all of her arrests, blackberry throwing drama, housekeeper abuse, not to mention a love of fur, I’m not sure if I should be giving her props or putting her on blast. Nonetheless, everybody deserves the opportunity to turn over a new leaf.

Naomi is pictured above planting to help raise awareness of environmental issues in Nigeria. A tree will be planted for every new baby born in the region’s hospitals in an effort to draw attention to the importance of environmental activism.

Girls We Heart: M.I.A.

Posted in celeb, charitable causes, events, girls we heart by jen

Not only does British/Sri Lankan singer M.I.A have the sickest fashion sense and one-of-a kind musical style, she also has a big heart! She recently performed at an MTV Awards after-party and announced that she would donate half of her $100,000 fee to charity. Her plan is to use the money to build schools in Liberia, where $52,000 will fund a school for a 1000 students.

In a recent development M.I.A just announced at the Bonnaroo musical festival that her performance there was to be her last gig ever. Let’s hope that this is just a nasty rumor because we definitely need musicians in the game who care about giving back.

Sk8

Posted in auto/transportation, charitable causes, events by jen

It seems like everywhere you look there’s some kid with baggy pants (or I guess they’re wearing them kinda tight these days) whizzing past you on a skateboard. That coupled with stories of woe from my girlfriends and their experiences with said sk8er boi’s (sorry, i couldn’t resist the Avril Lavigne reference), has left me with the feeling that skaters are taking over the world. Ok, so that might be a wee bit of an exaggerration, but they are definitely taking over a day and making it their own…. June 21st is officially Go Skateboarding Day (GSD).

Not only is skateboarding a great form of alternative transportation (no nasty carbon emissions here), but GSD marks a day where skateboarding also contributes to a good cause. Started in 2004, Go Skateboarding Day (GSD) was conceived as an excuse for skateboarders to skip their obligations and just get out there and grind.

This holiday has gained momentum and popularity with each passing year, with over 32 countries participating and upwards of 2.5 million media impressions in past years. Check the GSD website and see how you can create your own event for that day and donate proceeds from the event to a charitable cause.

Girls We Heart: Nicole Richie

Posted in baby/child, celeb, charitable causes, fashion, girls we heart, shopping by jen

Nicole Richie has definitely come a long way since her spoiled, ditzy, dim-witted diva days on the Simple Life (I’m not gonna lie, season 1 & 2 were great but it all went downhill in season 3 when Paris and Nicole got into a big fight and didn’t talk for like a year, and then made up and were reunited in season 4, and everything was all good again…but I digress)

Ever since the birth of her daughter, Harlow, she’s been getting all philanthropic on us. She created the Richie-Madden Children’s Foundation with her rocker boyfriend Joel Madden, and recently announced a collection of Signorelli angel tees to be sold with the profits donated to build a pediatric clinic on wheels for the Children’s Health Fund. Her goal is to raise $400,000 through the sale of the $75 tees, which are available at all Cusp boutiques.
