Russell Brand To Host Swap Meet At Beverly Center 5/27

Posted in events, los angeles by thuy | Tags:

buy-love-here-poster-med-1

Attention all actors and hoarders in LA:  Comedian and actor Russell Brand is scheduled to host ‘Buy Love Here,’ a swap meet type event on Thursday.

Buy Love Here‘ is a pop up and exchange shop, where for one day money will have no currency. The shop is the brain child of British comic Russell Brand and will take place between 2pm and 6pm on Thursday the 27th of May 2010, at The Beverly Center in Los Angeles.

The idea is to raise debate about the scale of consumer culture and to promote the re-use of products in a surplus society. It is a social experiment to examine shopping habits whilst providing an opportunity for Russell to speak directly with the public and gauge opinion. The day will be filmed as part of an ongoing documentary Russell is currently filming about the pursuit of happiness.”

Katy Perry, Adrian Grenier and Perez Hilton are scheduled to be part of the event. Art by Shepherd Fairey will be on display.

MLK_DEEP

As some of you know- I have several jobs (Hey mon, I Jamaican!  I got tree jobs, what about you?  You lazy coconut!) and one of my favorites is handling operations for a DJ I’ve loved since I was a wee one.  His name is Marques Wyatt and he’s been running DEEP here in Los Angeles for 11 years strong!  Some of you may remember his other joints- Brass, MAC’s Garage and Does Your Mama Know?- what, what?!?!?!  Damn, I’m aging myself.

Although I’ll be working this Sunday night, you can find me shaking my birthday butt on the dancefloor to some other legends such as Timmy Regisford, Dj Adam 12 (She Wants Revenge, AFEX) Anthony Valadez (KCRW/Dublab)  and the lovely Joplin.  No work or school on Monday so I’ll be looking forward to seeing some of you there.  If I can still see at that point.  : )

1/16 Happy Birthday today to one of my favorite Capricorns- SADE!  Queen is 51 and still looks the same as back in the day!

1/11 You know I love me some Mary J!!

1/19 Dolly Parton shares my actual day. Love this song with her and Willie Nelson from 1965.

1/16 Ok, she’s not a singer but hot mess Co-Kate Moss is another Capricorn I gotta give props to.  Why?  Johnny Depp is why- Durrr!  Here she is doing her best Nomi Malone pole impression, minus the glitter, high waisted thong and big hair.

I met up with my friend Giles to check out the last night of Environmentaland at the Hollywood & Highland center. There was a band, games, prizes and screen printing done by my friend Mike Crivello’s company Hit + Run.

If you’re looking to give your guests something cool at your next event- look into getting custom tee’s from the H+R team. There are organic cotton styles to choose from and the last time I spoke to Mike, they were looking into getting vegetable dye as an addtional option. WIN!!

Sorry for the lack of pictures of the actual event- my battery died and Giles has an iPhone= no flash.

Broccoli City was started by a few young guys who were largely influenced by the urban community. With the growth of the BC Company, and the different experiences of each founder, they found a need in the urban community to be more conscientious of the “Earth”. They have stated that while they are not radical preaching tree-huggers, they understand the importance of our environment, and want to close the gap in the urban community. The BC motto is that “most people live on this earth, but Broccoli City lives in it”.

Apple Levy and The Green Girls, under the tutelage of Apple, have created a warm and educational resource of Green, Green and more green eco friendly information, through blogging, videos, photos and articles.

Green Grown and Sexy is composed of two- LA based city girls. Follow the passion of the Sexy duo, animal rights, recycling , taking baby steps in taking care of the environment They wanted to be educated about Green, and that’s what they’re doing, join the movement.

Eco-Diva, is the Green guru of gurus, a freelance eco writer and consultant, she is the one to go to. If you interested in style, but not just any style, “ethical luxury”, you must contact he. The “green” way, she’s the one to contact.

VeeV is the World’s First Acai Spirit. Its goal is to change the way consumers think about cocktails and in the end, the way cocktails are ultimately consumed. Acai, the exotic Brazilian berry taking the world by storm, is said to be one of the healthiest fruits on the planet.

There is a need for education in the urban communities about “Being Organic”. In collaboration with Apple Levy and the Green Girls, Green Grown and Sexy, “Eco-Diva”, & Broccoli City, has joined forces to educate, stimulate, and foster relationships with the “Green” experience. The Stay Organic and Stay Fly event is a free mixer featuring “organic” liquor sponsored by VeeV. The event takes place on September 9, 2009 at the Standard Hotel (@ 8300 Sunset Boulevard, West Hollywood, CA 90069).

The questions to the urban communities about being “green” will begin to be resolved. Broccoli City with Apple Levy and The Green Girls, Green Grown and Sexy, and the “Eco-Divas” are teaming up to increase awareness, educate the community, and to bridge the urban gap to a more “organic and fly”, way of living.

F*CK RINGLING BROS!

Posted in animal rights, baby/child, events, in the wild, los angeles, video/media, wtf by thuy | Tags: , , , , , ,

Sorry about being out of commission since being back. Busy with work and prepping for my next shoot with Coco Eco Magazine.

I was just sent this link from Perez Hilton. Ringling Bros. had their show (arrived the day of the Michael Jackson Memorial) in LA at the Staples Center- they had a 4 day run beginning on July 9th.

When I heard that a few of my friends were going to the circus that week, my stomach knotted up. I tried explaining to them that the animals (especially the elephants) get beat and it didn’t make a difference. How could it if you only see the glittery show side and not what goes on behind those curtains and what they go through while traveling between cities and in their training sessions?

PETA vice president Daphna Nachminovitch said that their undercover agent “witnessed these elephants being beaten for no apparent reason.”

Ringling Bros. said they could not comment on the video because it had not been viewed yet, but they did say that “PETA is an animal rights extremist group…We are very proud of our animal care, we are committed to the care of all our animals partly through our conservation programs at the Ringling Bros. Center for Elephant Conservation…We have 139 years of experience of working with Asian elephants.”

If you support Ringling Bitchasses this is what your money is contributing to.

Disgusting.

FUCK YOU RINGLING BASTARDS!

One pissed off bitch.

m.a.m.a. e a r t h is a new non-profit organization that is ready to introduce itself to the world. Proceeds from this charity event will benefit Nourish the Children and Shine On Sierra Leone.

m.a.m.a. e a r t h is the brainchild of Kailani Bayot, a mother of two from O’ahu, HI who now resides in Los Angeles. Kailani has never been short on ideas and she’s pouring all of her creative energy into m.a.m.a. e a r t h.

“We are dedicated to raising awareness and making a change for the better by helping charities raise funds to benefit their causes,” says Kailani. “The concept of m.a.m.a. earth started with bracelets I make using hemp and the natural stone azurite-malachite, which is believed to be a sacred stone that promotes healing and aids in transformation. It has been a natural progression to become a non-profit organization and the bracelets are a wonderful way to raise funds for schools or organizations along with your favorite charity.”

The m.a.m.a. e a r t h red carpet event takes place at Dakota Lounge located at 1026 Wilshire Blvd., Santa Monica on Thursday June 11th at 8pm. Presale tickets are available at www.dakotalounge.com. Watch HOME Documentary Online For Free

HOME is a 2009 documentary by Yann Arthus-Betrand (photographer of “Earth from Above” book.). The film is entirely composed of aerial shots of various places around Earth. It shows the diversity of life on Earth and how humanity is threatening the ecological balance of the planet.

The movie was released simultaneously on June 5th (World Environmental Day) in cinemas all over the world, on DVD, TV and on YouTube. Released on the same date in 50 countries is a world record for any film release in history. The film is 100% free, and no profits will be made from its release or future showings.

Making this movie was an unusual risk for its financial backer, one of the planet’s biggest retailing conglomerates, France’s PPR SA. PPR, the maker of Gucci handbags and Puma shoes, paid PPR, the maker of Gucci handbags and Puma shoes, paid 10 million euros ($20.55 million) of the 12 million euro production budget to create HOME.

Laurent Claquin, senior vice-president of corporate social and environmental responsibility at PPR, said the company took a chance on the film.

“It’s true we’re putting ourselves at risk in a way,” said “We’re not perfect yet. We’re never going to be perfect. But we have a duty to act.”

In May, PPR Chief Executive Francois-Henri Pinaulttold a press conference: “This film commits us not to consume less, but to consume differently.”

The film is narrated in English by Glenn Close, in Spanish by Salma Hayek – also Pinault’s wife – and in 15 other languages.

eco-logical

Eco-LogicalART is a non-profit sister company to Peter Schulberg’s personal recovered element studio, the DejaDesign Gallery. Both entities share his conviction that beautiful objects surround us and only need to be re-envisioned.

With Eco-LogicalART Schulberg takes his theory of creative recovery to ground braking—or rather ground liberating new heights. The gallery’s fine art line features original art painted on recycled billboard vinyl. Tossed into landfills by the ton weekly, this heavy, ink impregnated material is an environmental nightmare. But ECO-LA takes the indestructible nature of the advertising vinyl and turns it into an asset. In fact the art can even hang on an exterior wall.

At 14 by 48 feet it is estimated that over 250,000 people a day will see the free art month long drive-by “exhibit.” To put that in perspective the famed Getty Museum averages about 4000 visitors daily.

The next billboard drop is Saturday June 13th. Go to the site for more info.

Eco-LogicalART is located at 4829 W. Pico Blvd (just east of La Brea) LA, CA, 90019. 310-525-0676

All aboard! Decided to head out by means of public transpo. Universal City to downtown hell-a. Final Destination- Standard Rooftop.

Made new friends with a young pack of skater boyz. Don’t call Chris Hansen on our asses.

I don’t know why we found this so amusing. (cough, sigg sippy cup, cough)

Cali Angels and friends.

Thanks to Family Affair for partnering with Surfrider Foundation West LA/Malibu Chapter to support the Rise Above Plastics campaign. The campaign was dedicated to eliminating single-use plastic water bottles and all other single-use plastic such as utensils and bags.

Special thanks to Chris Caparro and of course to Marques Wyatt and all the other DJ’s for getting our booties bumping under the sun. L.O.V.E.

Meat Was Murder For Moz At Coachella

Posted in animal cruelty, boys we heart, celeb, events, food/drink, music by thuy | Tags: , , , , , ,

The video clip above is of Morrissey walking off the stage during his set at Coachella because the smell of cooking meat offended him.

Morrissey gave his quote of the year at Coachella just before he walked off the stage during his song “Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others”: “I can smell burning flesh and I hope to God it’s human,” he said, smelling the barbeque sold by festival vendors.

To his credit, Moz did return to the stage and continue his set, giving the explanation that “the smell of burning animals is making me sick. I just couldn’t bear it.”

Morrissey usually has a strict ban on meat products at his gigs, but at festivals, anything goes.

Homie is SERIOUS about his hatred for meat. I don’t blame him. The smell of seafood makes me want to puke through my nostrils.

In other news, he was set to play the next night in my old stomping grounds of San Francisco. He cancelled his show only to be seen later chilling at the DNA Lounge. Oh that Mozzers, always so dramatic. We wouldn’t have it any other way. But I would have been PISSED as hell if I was supposed to be attending that show and he cancelled!

What Is Earth Day?

Posted in environment, events, holiday by thuy | Tags: ,

Earth Day is a Birthday!! Just like a birthday is a special day to celebrate a person, ED is a special day that celebrates the Earth. ED was born on April 22, 1970, in San Francisco, and is the annual U.S. celebration of the environment and a time for Americans to assess the work still needed to protect the natural gifts of our planet. Every year, America and over 100 different countries join together in the celebration of our Mother Earth. It’s the largest, most celebrated environmental event worldwide. On Earth Day, we remember to appreciate nature and learn ways to protect our environment. Find ways that you can help keep the planet clean and help protect our environment!

Watch the video above for a quick breakdown or visit Mashable for other inspirational Earth Day videos.

Thanks Ray!
