As increasing numbers of consumers and stakeholders are requesting evidence of environmental good practises before selecting suppliers or services, the need for a eco-sustainability recognition system is now vital.

In celebration of Earth Day, Fuel will be playing at the Fine Art Center in Beverly Hills. A must see documentary!

Description: Josh Tickell will be at the Fine Arts Theater of Beverly Hills showing FUEL and signing books. Josh will be participating in an open discussion with Rebecca Harell, producer of FUEL, and 10 year old UN Jr. Goodwill Ambassador Nikkos Hansen.

Director Josh Tickell takes us along for his 11 year journey around the world to find solutions to America’s addiction to oil. A shrinking economy, a failing auto industry, rampant unemployment, an out-of-control national debt, and an insatiable demand for energy weigh heavily on all of us. Fuel shows us the way out of the mess we’re in by explaining how to replace every drop of oil we now use, while creating green jobs and keeping our money here at home. The film never dwells on the negative, but instead shows us the easy solutions already within our reach.

Where: Fine Arts Center. 8556 Wilshire Ave. Beverly Hills, CA 90221

Coachella Ella Ella

Posts will be light until the beginning of next week. I’ve decided it’s going to be too difficult to drunk blog while basking under the sun at pool parties and going to see Public Enemy and The Cure. Party time! Excellent!

On a side note, please check out the Coachella website to read about the EnergyFACTory and TRASHed.

In an effort to cut back on plastic bottle waste, there will be 3 stations throughout the grounds offering the following:

  • Free drinking fountains – 3 locations throughout the venue, please see map
  • Bring your own container – it must be completely empty to enter the festival (from the main entrance or any camping areas). No glass, metal and no camel packs. You can fill up at the free drinking fountains or purchase cold filtered water for $1 per filling. 32oz maximum container allowed in.
  • Purchase a $10 plastic 24oz water container and receive free cold filtered water all weekend.
There are 3 refill locations located inside the venue, along with another in camping. You can purchase containers at each of these locations along with the merchandise tent and the general store in camping. Please see the map for locations or ask a festival staff member.
I don’t know why they changed it up but when my friend originally sent me this info, they were offering the metal Sigg-like containers. Now there is a note saying that they are not allowed to sell the metal water bottles. Boo. Plastic is plastic but I guess it’s better than hella thrown out water bottles.

Thanks Leilani!

It’s nice to see that even despite these times we’re in, people are still moving forward and dropping eco-friendly lines. But these aren’t just any ol’ people. Nope, it’s David Arquette, Ben Harper and David Bedwell (former Penguin vice president,) debuting their new line, Propr, their mostly organic new line for women and men.

I saw two dresses I would rock so that’s a good thing.

Here’s an invite for a viewing of the spring collection, this Friday night at My House. Enjoy!

Around The World For Earth Hour

Go to www.Boston.com to see the rest of the amazing shots from around the world.

And to all the haters that criticized Earth Hour, please stick a recycled dildo in your piehole.

Of course Earth Hour itself is not going to solve all of our environmental problems. But, it’s not supposed to solve all the problems. It was not an effort to conserve power for one hour. It was meant to be a symbolic event- not only to raise awareness – but to show the “powers that be” that there are hundreds of millions of individuals, and tens of thousands of communities, towns, cities, governments on this Planet Earth that are aware and are demanding that changes start NOW!

Every action taken, large or small, is the opposite of doing nothing.

Kip Fulbeck is a pioneering artist in identity politics. His mixed race ethnic background is Cantonese, English, Irish and Welsh. He is best known for his work addressing Hapa and multiracial identity, and as the creator of The Hapa Project. It features a foreword by Sean Lennon and an afterword by Paul Spickard.

Once a derogatory label derived from the Hawaiian word for “half,” Hapa has since been embraced as a term of pride by many whose mixed racial heritage includes Asian or Pacific Island descent. Kip Fulbeck began The Hapa Project as a forum for Hapas to answer the question “What are you?” in their own words and be pictured in simple head-on portraits.

Traveling throughout the country, he photographed over 1200 people from all walks of life – from babies to adults, construction workers to rock stars, gangbangers to pro surfers, schoolteachers to porn stars, engineers to comic book artists. The project now manifests as a book, Part Asian/100% Hapa traveling photographic exhibition, and online community.

Kip Fulbeck has been featured on CNN, MTV, and PBS and has exhibited his photography and films in over 20 countries. You may have seen the PBS Newshour feature on his Hapa Project which aired nationally last month.

Fulbeck’s new book project is MIXED KIDS- a photo portrait book about multiracial/multiethnic kids. It will be published by Chronicle Books in 2010 and features an introduction by Dr. Maya Soetoro-Ng, a nationally recognized educator, mixed race identity specialist, and sister of Barack Obama.

Ho’omaika’i ‘Ana To Sally & Gregory!!

Posted in charitable causes, events, girls we heart, reduce/reuse/recycle by thuy | Tags: , ,

The reason we were in Hawaii a few weeks back: Mr. and Mrs. McKnight.

This is what we were greeted with shortly after we landed in Maui. Mother nature at her finest.

It was a hike to get to this red sand beach but once we made it, we were in awe. Not without some LA whining along the way…how much farther? are we almost there yet? shit, I should have worn different shoes…

The crew with “Sally That Girl,” soon after she tied the knot. One down, the rest of us to go- who’s next???

Shout out to our hotel for using recycled toilet paper, recycled paper towels and for supplying our bathroom with natural products. Oh and for mahalo for our lovely beachfront view of heaven on earth.

Thanks to Sally and Gregory for giving the option of donating to their favorite charity, the California Shar-pei rescuse, in lieu of wedding gifts. Learning that several dogs were able to get medical attention and supplies, thanks to the couple and their loved ones, sure does beat receiving a new set of pots or a shiny gift from Tiffany’s in our book.

Congratulations Sally, we love you! Gregory, welcome to the fam. Thank you for having one of the most memorable and beautiful weddings ever.

Fairfax District Electronic Waste Recycling

Posted in environment, events, reduce/reuse/recycle, tech/gadgets by thuy | Tags: ,

Once again, I love my hood!! There will be a free electronic waste disposal at Fairfax highschool on the corner of Melrose and Fairfax this Saturday. If you can’t make it this weekend, you have two weekends per month during the month of March and April to start gathering up any broken or outdated ipods, cameras, shredders, tv’s, vcr’s and whatever other things you have sitting around collecting dust.

The processing of e-waste in developing countries causes serious health and pollution problems due to lack of containment, as do unprotected landfilling (due to leaching) and incineration. Reuse and recycling are promoted as alternatives to disposal as trash.

And feel free to stop by my place after doing your good deed. I’ll reward you with some organic moonshine and yummy vegan cookies.

Shepard Fairey For Earth Hour

Once again Shepard is lending his hand for another good cause. This time it’s for Earth Hour.

Earth Hour is an annual international event created by WWF (The World Wide Fund for Nature/World Wildlife Fund), held on the last Saturday of March, that asks households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change. It was pioneered by WWF Australia and the Sydney Morning Herald in 2007, and achieved worldwide participation in 2008.

Earth Hour will next take place on Saturday, March 28 2009 at 8:30pm, local time.

One hour, no lights, no electronics… let’s do it.

Happy New Year- Again!

Posted in events, holiday by thuy

Many people have heard of Chinese New Year but not Vietnamese Tet (Traditional New Year.) Tet falls sometime between the last ten days of January and the middle part of February. The year 2009 is the Chinese/Vietnamese Year of the Ox.

Tet is a time for family reunions, exchanging gifts, best wishes, forgiving others, paying debts; in short, to start the new year with a clean slate, or else a bad luck curse will remain with you for the coming year. One traditional practice during Tet is the distribution of red envelopes filled with “lucky”

money, with the red envelopes symbolizing wealth and fortune. Children pay respects to their elders by wishing them good luck with crossed arms in exchange for li xi (red envelopes.)

Literally, Tet Nguyen Dan means the first morning of the first day of the new period. Officially, it marks the beginning of a new year on the lunar calendar. In reality, it is a friendly, festive, family holiday. Painstaking care is given to starting the year out right, since it is believed the first day and the first week of the new year will determine the fortunes or misfortunes for the rest of the year.

You can wish Chúc Mừng Năm Mới (Greet New Year to You) to the Vietnamese, or Phat Tai (Wealth) to the Chinese.

Wishing you all good fortune for the new year. Lawd knows we all need it!

130 Tons Of Inauguration Litter

Posted in environment, events, politickin', reduce/reuse/recycle, reusable by thuy | Tags: , , ,

Damn! I guess that’s expected for the turnout of the inauguration. Unfortunately most of it ended up on the ground because many trash cans were removed for security reasons.

I can understand the usual suspects..fliers, drink/food containers and trash in general but what’s up with the blankets, sleeping bags, foldout chairs, pillows, coolers, gloves, and personal items that were left behind? Lazy ass mother #@*%*’s. You got the shit there, you couldn’t take it back with you? And this is the meaning of a “throw-away society.” Short-lived and disposable. I’m sure there are a lot of shelters or homeless people that could have used that stuff.

Other litter that was left behind came from vendors hawking Obama souvenirs including chairs, tables and bags full of unsold merchandise.

At least some people listened to what Obama said that day and stayed behind to pick up after others.

Just came across this blog called Litter Free Inauguration. Check them out on CBS News.

Go to the MLK or Renew America sites to find out how and where you can give back to your community in honor of this holiday.

Thanks to Melissa and my other Capricorn sisters for throwing & sharing the fabulous Studio 54 bday party and to everyone that came, dj’d and sauced me up. I had a blast. Mad love to all my friends & fam for the calls, texts & emails.

I also want to thank my parents for bumpin’ skin many moons ago and creating me. I guess good things did come from the Vietnam war.

Serve In Honor Of MLK Day

Posted in charitable causes, events, politickin' by thuy | Tags: , , , ,

Gen. Colin Powell, a Republican who endorsed President-elect Barack Obama before the November election, has together with the Presidential Inaugural Committee announced the “Renew America Together” initiative, which will kick off on Jan. 19th, the day before Mr. Obama is sworn in as president.

The initiative, which will begin on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, is a call to “all Americans to make an ongoing commitment to serve their communities and their country,” according to a release.

“At this moment of great purpose and great promise, President-elect Obama is calling on all Americans to make an ongoing commitment to serve their communities and their country,” said Powell, an honorary co-chair of the inauguration. “We’re not just asking the American people for one day of service. We are asking you to make an ongoing commitment of your time – an hour, a weekend, whatever you can spare. Because that’s how we’re going to rebuild this country and meet our great challenges –

together.”

To kick off the initiative on the 19th, Mr. Obama, Vice President-elect Joe Biden and their families will participate in community service projects in the D.C. area.

As times are tough right now and many are out of work, this would be the perfect time for us all to give back to our communities. It could be for one day, one week or ongoing.

Gobble Give Give Give

Posted in charitable causes, events, food/drink by thuy

Gobble Gobble Give started with one person and a group of friends that have been getting together for the past 10 years to help cook and deliver meals. The first year, 28 homeless were fed. The next year more people showed up to help and over fifty meals went out. The following year, they reached the 100 mark and last year they were able to feed almost 950 homeless as well as donate clothing, grooming kits and other basic neccessities.

The formula= show up to the Echo with food to contribute (potatoes, beans, pie, etc.) Choose to either be a food server/preparer or choose to be a driver with a team to head out into the streets looking for homeless to hand food to.

I arrived with my caravan (Tammie, Ken & Kobe) a bit past 10 am. We couldn’t believe the line up of cars in idle just waiting to load up with food to deliver. The line to help prep the food was incredible too.

Inside the Echo, the energy was amazing. It didn’t hurt that there was a DJ dropping beats as everyone hustled to to put the individual meals together. They had to do shifts of an hour or so, so that the people in line outside could also participate. There were hundreds of people that helped throughout the day and it was truly inspiring to witness it all.

They say you will be done by 1pm but by noon they had run out of food and clothing donations. It took us forever to find the last 10 people to hand the food out to because everyone we pulled up to already had one. We decided to head back over to our hood (Weho) where we were finally able to find some thankful people who had not been given meals yet.

Seriously, next year, if you don’t have to cook your own Thanksgiving meal or be a guest at one before 1 p.m., I highly suggest you participate in this. Go to their website and check out the video and pics.

Thanks to Amy and Claudio for giving me the heads up on this gratifying event.

Today Is National Recycle Day

It’s pretty convieneint that it falls on a Saturday. Take an hour out of your day to go through your garage, a drunk (typo and I’m keeping it) drawer or closets and find some stuff to recycle. Go here and here to see what events are going on in your area.

Laughs For Obama

Thuy and I were honored to be a part of the Comedy Store benefit to raise money for Obama’s campaign. It took us awhile to get around to posting the pics but better late than never!!

We had a great time with our friends Carl (Her) and Eddie (G1) and met some great people from the Good Life.

Pauly Shore and a whole gang of other comedians had us cracking up. A great time for a great cause!!

P.S- Thanks for the drinks guys!!

Pink Cloud Does It Again With Opportunity Green

Sarah (Pink Cloud Events) and GG&S locking down the Olan Mills prom pose.

Party people.

Organic beats provided by Dublab.

Opportunity Green held it’s two day conference at UCLA over the weekend and on Saturday night we got to be a part of the after party thrown by, none other than the event queen herself, Sarah Shewey of Pink Cloud Events.

There were yummy treats provided by some of our favorite eateries such as Leaf Cuisine, Tender Greens and Ciudad. Bevearges full of goodness were served by my friends new company, Barbelles. Hot chicks serving up canned heat is always a nice addition to any soiree. We loved the various stations that were set up for recycling and composting. No forks, plates, cups, or food bits went to waste. This was a party for the conscious.

Afterwards, a handful of peeps headed to Ecco in Hollywood, where they had a special table reserved for Ms. Shewey and her entourage. Environmentally friendly 360 vodka makes dirty dancing and innocent debauchery a lot more fun.

If you watch Planet Green’s Alter Eco show, keep your eye out for Sarah, she’s appeared in a few recent episodes.

GG&S x Pure/Roker Election Night

The boy we ♥. What now Raymond?

Michael Abbott and Timothy Linh Bui. Michael produced the Declare Yourself with Jessica Alba PSA campaign/spot, which prompted over 500,000 people to register to vote. Nice job! www.unitedfrontfilms.com

The most memorable shot of the evening. Raymond and his mom Darlene, watching Obama’s speech on the big screen.

The night that we had all been waiting for was finally upon us. We decided to have our own pre-election party at Raymond’s before heading out to the after party. The guests were arriving, the food was lined up, the drinks were flowing, and of course CNN was in the background. Just as it was about to get really good… snap-crackle-pop! The electricity went out. WTF? Apparently a transformer blew from the windy weather.

We rallied over to the Declare Yourself party at Zune Space. Words cannot explain the energy we felt the second we walked in the door or all the emotional outpour that came after hearing those words. “He did it. He’s the President.”

The end. But thankfully, it’s really a new beginning.

*Let the record show that Raymond is eating a 100% veggie hot dog in the picture below.

We now re-direct you to our normal broadcast system…green business as usual, but with a dose of political flavor.
