Recycle-A-Flask. Can I Get An AMEN!?!

Posted in food/drink, reduce/reuse/recycle by thuy | Tags: , ,

Recycle-A-Flask

When I first laid my hands on the solar powered G-spot vibrator, I was blinded by a thousand white glimmering lights that shined upon me from the skies above..and when I first tasted organic vodka bought from my local BevMo!, I felt blessed knowing I was sipping on bottled up tears from the angels up in heaven..but now I KNOW for a fact that baby jesus is answering my prayers one by one from that time my mom forced me to go to church 2 Easters ago because of this new find– Recycle-A-Flask!

Recycle-A-Flask is 100% recyclable, reusable, BPA-free and sexy as hell!  It carries 5 oz of gods nectar, comes with a funnel and has a clear window on the side so you don’t overfill and waste one drop of the precious juice.  That would be cardinal sin.  See, I learned something from all those years spent in catholic school.

These would make perfect gifts for groomsmen, lushy bachelorette participants or at company holiday parties.  You can even get custom logos or images put on them through Fun Flasks.  They’re also very affordable (under $5) and can be found at Hot Topic, Aahs!! and various liquor stores around town.

Recycle-a-flask_1

Now I’m a believer that miracles do happen!  I have a collection of flasks and I’ve always wanted a plastic one.  Yeah, yeah, I know, not very GG&S of me but the metal ones weigh heavily in my small hand clutch during a night of debauchery.  Plus, plastic goes undetected through those pesky metal detectors.  But the fact that these are recyclable and BPA-free clears my guilty conscious and the liquid gold that goes inside of them helps to clear the catholic guilt I was raised with most of my life.  Ok, it only clears it for one night but thats why I keep on drinking.  Chu’uch!

Welcome to the family Recyle-A-Flask!

The Story Of Bottled Water

Posted in food/drink, reduce/reuse/recycle, video/media by thuy | Tags: , , ,

I have to admit, I haven’t ditched plastic bottles completely.  I try to remember to fill up my reusable bottles for on-the-go purposes but sometimes I forget or don’t want to be hassled with carrying it everywhere with me.  Cut to this little animated video from the lady that brought us The Story of Stuff.  I think I’ll start trying a little harder to stop being so forgetful and lazy.

Annie Leonard, the activist filmmaker behind “The Story of Stuff” and the above short, “The Story of Bottled Water,” had this to say:

In the last few decades, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Nestle and other big beverage companies have spent untold millions making us afraid of tap water. They’ve told us that if we want to be sure what we drink is pure and clean — not to mention hip and fashionable — we should buy bottled water. After all, nobody cool or environmentally conscious drinks tap water, right?

The thing is, there are a lot of inconvenient truths the bottled water ads don’t mention:

• Bottled water is subject to fewer health regulations than tap water. In 2006, Fiji Water ran ads bragging that their product doesn’t come from Cleveland, only to have tests show a glass of Fiji water is lower quality than Cleveland tap. Oops!

• Up to 40% of bottled water is filtered tap water. In other words, if you’re concerned about what’s in your tap water, just cut out the middleman and buy a home water filter.

• Each year, according to the Pacific Institute’s Peter Gleick, making the plastic water bottles used in the U.S. takes enough oil and energy to fuel a million cars. And that doesn’t even include the fuel required to ship, fly or truck water across continents and state lines.

• Three-fourths of the half-billion plastic water bottles sold in the U.S. every week go to the landfill or to incinerators. It costs our cities more than $70 million to landfill water bottles alone each year, according to Corporate Accountability International.

Santa Monica Restaurant Closes Down After Being Caught Serving Whale Meat

hump_close1

Whoa!  That was quick.  After being busted a few weeks back for serving endangered whale meat, Hump restaurant has decided to close up shop.  From their website:

THE HUMP IS CLOSING ITS DOORS

After twelve years doing business in Santa Monica, The Hump will be closing its doors effective March 20th, 2010.

The Hump hopes that by closing its doors, it will help bring awareness to the detrimental effect that illegal whaling has on the preservation of our ocean ecosystems and species. Closing the restaurant is a self-imposed punishment on top of the fine that will be meted out by the court. The Owner of The Hump also will be taking additional action to save endangered species.

One such action will be to make a substantial contribution to one or more responsible organizations dedicated to the preservation of whales and other endangered species.

The Hump apologizes to our loyal customers, the community of Santa Monica, and the public at large for our illegal actions. While the current difficulties faced by The Hump overshadow the many friendships formed over the years, we want our customers and friends to know how much we thank you for your support.

Good riddance!

World Water Day: Clean Water For A Healthy World 3/22/10

Posted in environment, food/drink, health by thuy | Tags: , , , ,

Picture 17

Today is World Water Day so get ready for a flurry of water related posts.

Brita and Nalgene (the real BPA-free reusable bottle-cough*SIGG*cough) teamed up to create the FilteForGood pledge to reduce bottled water waste.  Together, filtered water and a reusable bottle are a solution for going green at home and on the go.

Take the pledge and fill your reusable bottle instead of the landfill.

About World Water Day

March 22 was first deemed World Water Day in 1993 by the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) as an international day of observance and action to draw attention to the role that freshwater plays in our world and lives. Today’s reality is that one in eight people in the world don’t have access to safe water, millions of women and children must still spend several hours a day collecting water from distant, often polluted sources, and 2.5 billion people live without a toilet.

To do something about that UN-Water has chosen Clean Water for a Healthy World as theme for World Water Day 2010. The overall goal of the World Water Day on 22 March 2010 campaign is to raise the profile of water quality at the political level so that water quality considerations are made alongside those of water quantity.

Santa Monica Restaurant Busted For Selling Endangered Whale Meat

Posted in food/drink, wild things by thuy | Tags: , , ,

typhoon_whalemeat

Typhoon Restaurant Inc., which owns The Hump restaurant, and 45-year-old Kiyoshiro Yamamoto of Culver City, were charged Wednesday with illegally selling an endangered species product.

Two undercover diners working with the producers from “The Cove” requested whale from the “chef’s choice” menu and were served 8 slices of it for $600.  Yes, six hundred mother effin’ dollars!  WTF?  The diners bagged a sample of the meal and testing confirmed it was indeed sei whale.

Under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, it is illegal to sell any kind of whale meat in the United States, and sei are listed as endangered. Sei whales are the third-largest baleen whale, behind the blue and finback whales.

Hooray for the Oscar winning doc, The Cove and BOO to Typhoon!

California Trans-Fat Ban Goes Into Effect January 1st

I’m not sure if that’s a good thing since that’s the day I’m going to be crawling to Canter’s for a greasy breakfast to cure my hangover.

On Friday, California will become the first state to ban restaurants from cooking with trans-fats which is the substance linked to clogged arteries, strokes and coronary heart disease..   The  ban on oils, margarines, and shortenings containing more than 0.5 grams of trans fat per serving will be monitored by restaurant inspections already conducted by local health departments. Violators can be fined up to $1,000.

CNN Heroes Of 2009

bio

Last night in an attempt to pull myself away from my own drunken pity party of downloading picture hell, I turned on the boob tube and stopped dead in my remote tracks once I caught glimpse of the hot piece above.  It was CNN Heroes of 2009 and I got a quick reality check of people with real issues and the ones that are doing something to help.

Bartender Doc Hendley is providing clean water to communities worldwide. Through creative fundraising, his nonprofit Wine To Water has brought sustainable water systems to 25,000 people in five countries.

Jordan Thomas, 20, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, lost both of his legs in a boating accident in 2005. Since then, his Jordan Thomas Foundation has raised more than $400,000 to provide prosthetics for children in need.

Efren Peñaflorida gives Filipino youth an alternative to gang membership through education. His Dynamic Teen Company‘s 10,000 members have taught basic reading and writing to 1,500 kids living in the slums.

Thowin’ in this clip of Maxwell performing just because..um..it’s Maxwell!  Swoon.

Todays theme in my posts: junk food. Bad for us, but we still eat them.

I check in with Terracycle from time to time to see what new recycled wrapper products they’ve come up with.

I loved flying kites when I was a kid. And I also loved Oreo cookies dipped in milk. Now, not so much. But this kite made from recycled wrappers for the low price of $5.99 is pretty slick.

The holidays are less than 100 days away and although my Candy Spelling manic wrapping days are over, sometimes a bow on a plain box or bag adds just the right touch.

Go to Terracycle to find out which retail locations carry their products or join their online brigades to raise money from your wrappers to donate to a charity or your favorite school.

The videos are clear: if you want a healthier America, take action at onetray.org. Every child deserves the opportunity to eat food in school that ensures their health and well-being and Farm to School programs are one solution to incorporating healthier foods into school meals.

Korean Bibimbop Is The Bomb!

Posted in celeb, food/drink, veggie love, video/media by thuy | Tags: , , , ,

Here’s Gwenny giving a 7 minute video on how to cook this deliciousness without having to venture out to K-town.

Bibimbop literally means “mixed rice” or “mixed meal” in Korean. It’s a popular meal consisting of a bowl of steamed white rice topped with vegetables, a whole egg, and kochujang (Korean chili pepper paste).

Seems simple enough. I think I’ll give it a try but if I don’t succeed, I’ll have a nice big bowl of rice with kimchee and practice my julienne skillz.

Take Your Pre-2009 Sigg Bottles Back To Whole Foods NOW!!

Posted in food/drink, health, news, wtf by thuy | Tags: ,

Photobucket

Well ain’t this a bitch? We’ve touted and praised our beloved BPA-free Siggs several times on our blog, only to get hit below the skirt with the sad news that Sigg has indeed had BPA in their lining all along!

In a letter from the CEO, Steve Wasik, dated Sept. 1st, the company verified that the rumors that bottles manufactured prior to August of 2008 do in fact have liners containing bisphenol A – a chemical that may adversely affect human health.

Jen and I have spent a pretty penny on our Siggs. At $20+ for one container, we thought it was well worth the investment for our health and for the environment. We’ve given them out as gifts to several friends and have suggested them over any other brand over and over. Hell, we even mentioned them in a holiday gift list for Dame Magazine. FML!!

See links below for more on the big fib. For now, please note that Sigg is offering to replace your tainted bottle with a new one by sending it in to their headquarters. But eff that! That means you pay for shipping. It’s not stated on their website, but you can also take your Sigg back to any Whole Foods. Hurry up because it ends at the end of this month. No receipt necessary. Just walk on up to the customer service counter, tell them you got juked and would like to exchange yours for a new one.

Below is an example of the different linings. The bottom two with the bronze color lining are the older ones (with BPA.) The top two with the light greenish lining are the newer ones (w/out BPA.) If any of yours match the coloring of the bottom bottles, hightail it to your nearest Whole Foods immediately.

I’m guilty of being a Sigg whore. And I want to thank them for giving it to me in the back door with no lube. Now I gotta go down to the free clinic on Monday and make sure I don’t have BPA cooties. Damn you Sigg and damn your Keith Haring series that you got me hooked on like crack!

Monsanto= EVIL. And they’re not too happy about their portrayal in Food Inc. From their site:

Welcome to the Monsanto Fact site about the movie Food, Inc.

Food, Inc. is a one-sided, biased film that the creators claim will “lift the veil on our nation’s food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that’s been hidden from the American consumer.” Unfortunately, Food, Inc. is counter-productive to the serious dialogue surrounding the critical topic of our nation’s food supply.

And they even provide a fun lil’ quiz for you to take. It says I lost but I got every single one of those answers right.

Must See Movie: Food, Inc.

In Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation’s food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government’s regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation’s food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment.

We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, herbicide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won’t go bad, but we also have new strains of E. coli—the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults.

Featuring interviews with such experts as Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation), Michael Pollan (The Omnivore’s Dilemma, In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto) along with forward thinking social entrepreneurs like Stonyfield’s Gary Hirshberg and Polyface Farms’ Joel Salatin, Food, Inc. reveals surprising—and often shocking truths—about what we eat, how it’s produced, who we have become as a nation and where we are going from here.

Went to a herbal store in Chinatown (in LA, it’s more like Vietnam town) with my mom. I was expecting to see some ginseng, cinnamon & ginger. I was not prepared to see this.

Photobucket

Shark fins!!!! At $499 a lb? That’s like 10 fins for 5 bills! I had to ask my mom if that was in US or Vietnamese dollars. She gave me the “Girl are you stupid? We’re in America” side eye.

No wonder why it’s considered a delicacy.

“Finning” refers to the practice of cutting off only the shark fins and discarding the body. Sometimes sharks are dead when they’re pulled into the boats, but often, they’re still alive as their four fins are cut off with a knife. When they’re thrown back into the ocean the sharks either bleed to death, or they drown, because sharks can’t swim without fins, and they need to go forward to get oxygen.

It made me sad to see this. But then I saw something that always puts a smile on my face.

BOOOOOOZE! And then my eyeballs popped outta my head again. WTF?

The Cove Movie

Posted in animal rights, charitable causes, environment, film/tv/print, food/drink, in the wild, video/media by thuy | Tags: , , , ,

The Cove, which has won honors at many film festivals, including the Audience Award at January’s Sundance Film Festival, chronicles the efforts of Richard O’Barry and the Save Japan Dolphins Coalition to stop the brutal annual slaughter of thousands of dolphins in Japan. The Cove also won the Audience Award at the Toronto Film Festival and the Newport Beach Film Festival.

“The dolphin slaughter is scheduled to begin again on September 1st,” notes Richard O’Barry, Director of Save Japan Dolphins. “The world-wide exposure of the dolphin slaughter through The Cove movie is going to put a spot-light on this secret environmental disaster. It can’t happen too soon.”

“We believe The Cove will be a game-changer,” stated David Phillips, Director of Earth Island Institute’s International Marine Mammal Project, a members of the Save Japan Dolphins Coalition. “Japan’s flaunting of international agreements and international norms must end — the killing of dolphins and whales is no longer accepted by civilized society.”

It has been a natural progression to become a non-profit organization and the bracelets are a wonderful way to raise funds for schools or organizations along with your favorite charity.”

The m.a.m.a. e a r t h red carpet event takes place at Dakota Lounge located at 1026 Wilshire Blvd., Santa Monica on Thursday June 11th at 8pm. Presale tickets are available at www.dakotalounge.com. Bring a pair of new or used shoes for the m.a.m.a. e a r t h shoe drive, enjoy the show, silent auction and check out some amazing vendors and artists. Proceeds to benefit Nourish the Children and Shine on Sierra Leone.

Belgian City Goes Veggie Once A Week

Posted in environment, food/drink, health, veggie love by thuy | Tags: , , ,

Starting last month in Ghent, there have been regular weekly meatless days in which civil servants and elected councillors opt for vegetarian meals.

The UN says livestock is responsible for nearly one-fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions, hence Ghent’s declaration of a weekly “veggie day”.

Public officials and politicians were the first to give up meat for a day. Schoolchildren followed suit with their own veggiedag in September.

It is hoped the move will cut Ghent’s environmental footprint and help tackle obesity.

Around 90,000 so-called “veggie street maps” are now being printed to help people find the city’s vegetarian eateries.

The World According To Monsanto

worldmonsanto

The World According to Monsanto is an in-depth documentary that looks at the domination of the agricultural industry from one of the world’s most insidious and powerful companies.

This is one of the most powerful, must see films for anyone interested in the behind the scenes world of the food industry, and how just one world dominating corporation holds the keys and patents to much of the worlds food supply.

Monsanto, which started out as one of the planets largest chemical companies is also reposonsible for such chemical compounds as Agent Orange, Bovine Growth Hormone, PCBs and genetically-engineered crops.

Monsanto is scary shit and we eat their scary shit. Watch the entire document on Twilight Earth.

Eco-friendly Pizza Box

Posted in food/drink, reduce/reuse/recycle by thuy | Tags: , ,

Made out of 100% recycled cardboard. These boxes break down into self serving plates and folds up to become storage for the leftover pizza.

You can feel assured that any pizza joints that uses these boxes probably won’t have employees rubbing their ass juice or mocos in your slices.

Thanks Jesus!
