Green Tip: Buy Organic

Posted in environment, food/drink, green tips, health, organic, veggie love by thuy | Tags: , , , ,

It’s common sense; organic food is good food. Good to eat, good for the environment, good for the small-scale farmers and farm workers who produce it. By the year 2000, the USDA estimates that half of all U.S. farm products will come from only 1% of the farms. The EPA says that agriculture is responsible for 70% of the pollution to the country’s rivers and streams caused by chemicals, erosion, and animal waste runoff. Organic farming may be one of the last ways to keep both ecosystems and rural communities healthy and alive.

Organic food doesn’t contain toxins like pesticides, heavy metals, dangerous industrial chemicals (for example, artificial flavors, colors or preservatives). And everything in it is natural: it’s real food, not “Frankenfood” created in a laboratory for profit regardless of the fact that genetically modified, synthetic foods have massive, well-known health hazards

Is Your Cleaner Really Greener?

Posted in green tips by jen | Tags: ,

We are increasingly seeing people turning to “organic” or “green” drycleaners, as consumers look for alternatives to traditional dry cleaning and its use of the solvent perchloroethylene.

Prolonged contact with this solvent, known as PCE or perc, has been linked in some studies to cancer and neurological troubles like vision problems, and its use is strictly regulated.

Unfortunately these so-called “green” cleaners are not regulated at all, and are often times using cleaning methods that are nearly as harmful as the conventional ones.

Given these misleading marketing claims, it would be wise to question your local “green” cleaner about the specific methods they use.

Breakin’ It Down: Greywater

Posted in environment, food/drink, green tips, health, home by thuy | Tags:

Greywater is water that flows down sink, shower, and washing machine drains–but not the toilet. Greywater may contain traces of dirt, food, grease, hair, and household cleaning products. While greywater may look “dirty,” it is a safe and even beneficial source of irrigation water. If released into rivers, lakes, or estuaries, the nutrients in greywater (mainly phosphate from detergent) become pollutants, but to garden plants, they are valuable fertilizer. Aside from the obvious benefits of saving water (and money on your water bill), reusing your greywater keeps it out of the sewer or septic system, thereby reducing the chance that it will pollute local water bodies Reusing greywater for irrigation reconnects urban residents and our backyard gardens to the natural water cycle.

Skip The Holiday Cards

Posted in environment, green tips by thuy | Tags: , ,

Well at least the paper kind. It’s an easy and simple step you can take to help save on waste and overall, the environment. I used to buy cards by the dozens and have them on back up for bdays, congrats, thank you’s, etc.

Those days are so over. I went through boxes of cards given to me over the years and got rid of most of them. I never look at them and they take up precious space.

It’s all about the e-cards. I made the one above a few years back. You pick a design, write your message, enter the email addy and press send. Ta-da. There are even funny videos, like the one below: You Can’t Wrap This- HAMMERTIME! Here’s a few sites that offer them. Find more by going to google.

And for all ya’ll asking, yes, that’s Bishop (king of all things green, literally) the P-I-M-P in that pic above and no I am not working for him. I know times are tough, but I’m not quite to that point. Although it’s nice to know I have friends in “high” places if shit ever hits the fan.
Look who I bumped into on the street the day after I wrote this post. Guess this will be my virtual 09 card. BTW…I inquired about any open positions. He’s cutting back on his “workforce” as well. Damn, scary times indeed!

Saving The Planet One Hole AT A Time

Posted in environment, green tips by jen

Wow… I just thought this was a dope ass font when I stumbled across it, but now I’m really feeling it. Dutch company SRANQ conceptualized a font that uses less font while maintaining readability in an effort to save ink.

With the Ecofont SPRANQ hopes to increase environmental awareness as well as increasing customer awareness about printing behavior. They recognize that printing is both a waste of ink and paper and their hope is to inspire software giants and printer manufacturers to innovate in an environmentally conscious manner.

They tried lots of possible ink-saving-options. From extra thin letters to letters with outlines only. They experimented with using various shapes: dashes, squares, triangles and even asterisks. In the end the circle was choosen as the best option.

You can download the ecofont into your font folder here for FREE!!

Note- The Ecofont works best when using font size 9 or 10. The results vary depending on your software.

Clear The Air

Posted in environment, green tips by jen | Tags: , ,

HERE’S SOME TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR INDOOR AIR QUALITY-

-If you have an air filter, keep it clean so that it removes the most air pollutants possible

-Carpets are commonly made with synthetic materials that off-gas toxic chemicals. These materials also make carpet hard to recycle (and therefore, most just go straight to the landfill). Carpets also can be home to pests and mildew.

-Look for pieces of furniture that are not coated in harmful, off-gassing chemicals.

-Buy a friendly plant. Some of the best plants for removing air pollutants such as formaldehyde and benzene include the peace lily, bamboo palm, English ivy, mums, and gerbera daisies.

Green Tip: Hang Dry Your Clothes

Posted in green tips by thuy | Tags: , , ,

Tumble drying your clothes consumes the most energy of all of your household appliances. Use nature’s dryer instead- air. Hang drying helps to prolong the life of your garments, as well as preventing shrinkage and fading.

Cutting your dryer use reduces your home’s emissions, and there’s strong evidence that human emissions, such as CO2, are changing the world’s climate.

If you have to use the dryer, keep the filter lint-free and run loads back to back while the drum is still hot. And to save energy with your washing machine, reserve hot water for very dirty loads, and always rinse in cold water.

Not all of us have the luxury of a house with a yard and clothesline, if this is your case, simply use any rods, racks or shelves in your apartment to hang dry your clothes. Bed Bath & Beyond & Target also carry retractable lines you can put up in your shower. Happy hanging.

Breakin’ It Down: Greenwashing

Posted in breakin' it down, green tips by jen | Tags:

Before you buy into the latest product craze (whether it be cleaning, beauty, clothing etc), because they claim to be going “green”, you need to understand the concept of the term “greenwashing”.

Greenwashing is defined as “disinformation disseminated by an organization so as to present an environmentally responsible public image.” The term is generally used when significantly more money or time has been spent advertising being green, rather than spending resources on environmentally sound practices.

Breakin’ It Down: E-Waste

Posted in environment, green tips, reduce/reuse/recycle, tech/gadgets by thuy | Tags: , , , , ,

Electronic waste, “e-waste” or “Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment” (“WEEE“) is a waste type consisting of any broken or unwanted electrical or electronic device. Recyclable electronic waste is sometimes further categorized as a “commodity” while e-waste which cannot be reused is distinguished as “waste”. Both types of e-waste have raised concern considering that many components of such equipment are considered toxic and are not biodegradable.

Electronic waste is of concern largely due to the toxicity and carcinogenicity of some of the substances if processed improperly. Toxic substances in electronic waste may include lead, mercury and cadium.

Every time we toss out our electronics, we’re dumping on the poor. Please make an effort to recycle your gadgets, computers, televisions, ipods, etc..

Sing It To Me Teddy

Posted in green tips by thuy

Green Tip: Turn off the lights. I hear that song in my head every time I catch myself walking out of a room and forgetting to flip the switch. If you’re at home and going to leave a room for more than 5 minutes, turn it off. On your way out of a public restroon, shut it down. Last to leave work or at a friends or family members that forgets to or chooses not to? You know what to do. I’m sure the only instance I don’t have to give you this tip is when you’re in between the sheets.

Bag The Bag

Posted in environment, green tips, reduce/reuse/recycle, reusable by jen

Green Tip: Use Reusable bags. I’ll say it again because it just can’t be said enough. One of the simplest things you can do on your journey to becoming green is to ditch plastic (and paper bags) and hop on the reusable bag bandwagon. There are so many cute, stylish options out there that there’s really no excuse for anyone to still be carrying armloads of non-biodegradable plastic bags. These bags wreak havoc on the environment as they pile up in landfills and seep into marine life.

Check out these super hip re-usable bag from Baggu. They have a dope interactive website that allows you to color customize your bags with everything from bold colors to stripes. Guys, don’t be afraid to rock them either. Girls heart guys who care about the environment!

Green Tip: Conserve Water. It’s a misconception that there is an endless supply of water available for our reckless consumption. On the contrary, in many countries there is a huge shortage, not to mention a drought in Los Angeles as we speak.

Here are some simple things you can do to preserve water-Turn the tap off while you brush your teeth. . Wait until you have a full load before you do laundry or run the dishwasher. Keep a pitcher of water in the refrigerator instead of running the tap for cold drinks. Take shorter showers (aka navy showers) or squeeze in a little ‘sexytime’ and shower with your boo. The list goes on but it’s pretty self-explanatory. Waste not, want not!!

Just Say No

Posted in environment, food/drink, green tips by thuy | Tags: , ,

Green Tip: Just say no to condiments, plastic cutlery and napkins. Because of my busy schedule, I order take out or delivery at least once a week, and with every order comes the usual suspects, ketchup, soy sauce, parmesan cheese, etc. Also included will be several napkins and disposable plastic cutlery. I have all these things in my own kitchen at home, there is no need for me to get them in single sized servings that will only create more waste. If you have a kitchen setup at your office, bring in full size bottles of your favorite (organic) sides and keep them in the fridge.

Going Green Gradually

Posted in environment, green tips, reduce/reuse/recycle by jen

Going green is not an overnight process… take it from someone who gets a little greener everyday. Oftentimes there is so much “green” information being thrown at us, we become overwhelmed and don’t know where to start. Thuy and I will be posting green tips whenever we can to get you started on your eco-friendly journey. Good luck!

Green Tip: Switch to paperless billing-This is as simple as contacting your monthly bill companies and requesting to be billed electronically (e-billing). In the United States, hard copy bills generate almost 700,000 tons of waste and almost two million tons of carbon dioxide. Not only will you save the environment but you’ll save on stamps too! (Btw, If you are still getting hard copies of your bills… Please RECYCLE!)

Do You Want To “Be Like Ed” (Begley Jr.)?

Posted in celeb, environment, film/tv/print, green tips by jen | Tags: , ,

Although many of you grew up wanting to “Be Like Mike“, this is the year 2008 and there’s a new sheriff in town . These days I’m trying to “Be Like Ed (Begley Jr.)” Although Ed may not have the flash and flair of Michael Jordan, his guide to living green will definitely make you feel like a superstar. For all of you out there looking to make some eco-friendly changes, a good place to start is with Ed Begley Jr.’s book Living Like Ed: A Guide to the Eco-Friendly Life.

A long time veteran actor, Ed, has been an environmental activist for over 30 years and lives by the motto that he “lives simply so others may simply live.” This book is an easy read filled with tips from Ed’s own firsthand experience. He breaks down what works and what doesn’t, as well as shows the reader ways to be green and save money at the same time. This book shows you that you don’t have to compromise comfort or aesthetic in an effort to go green. His wife Rachelle, a co-author to the book, believes in “style with a conscience,” and gives her tips on how to keep the chic in eco-chic… it’s a match made in green heaven!!
