Take Your Pre-2009 Sigg Bottles Back To Whole Foods NOW!!
Posted in food/drink, health, news, wtf by thuy | Tags: bpa, siggWell ain’t this a bitch? We’ve touted and praised our beloved BPA-free Siggs several times on our blog, only to get hit below the skirt with the sad news that Sigg has indeed had BPA in their lining all along!
In a letter from the CEO, Steve Wasik, dated Sept. 1st, the company verified that the rumors that bottles manufactured prior to August of 2008 do in fact have liners containing bisphenol A – a chemical that may adversely affect human health.
Jen and I have spent a pretty penny on our Siggs. At $20+ for one container, we thought it was well worth the investment for our health and for the environment. We’ve given them out as gifts to several friends and have suggested them over any other brand over and over. Hell, we even mentioned them in a holiday gift list for Dame Magazine. FML!!
See links below for more on the big fib. For now, please note that Sigg is offering to replace your tainted bottle with a new one by sending it in to their headquarters. But eff that! That means you pay for shipping. It’s not stated on their website, but you can also take your Sigg back to any Whole Foods. Hurry up because it ends at the end of this month. No receipt necessary. Just walk on up to the customer service counter, tell them you got juked and would like to exchange yours for a new one.
Below is an example of the different linings. The bottom two with the bronze color lining are the older ones (with BPA.) The top two with the light greenish lining are the newer ones (w/out BPA.) If any of yours match the coloring of the bottom bottles, hightail it to your nearest Whole Foods immediately.
I’m guilty of being a Sigg whore. And I want to thank them for giving it to me in the back door with no lube. Now I gotta go down to the free clinic on Monday and make sure I don’t have BPA cooties. Damn you Sigg and damn your Keith Haring series that you got me hooked on like crack!

Dear Huffington Post, You’re Doing It Wrong
Posted in animal cruelty, animal rights, in the wild, news, politickin', wtf by thuy | Tags: ad sales, animal cruelty, huffington post, huffington post promoting animal cruelty, peta, ringling bros.I go to Huffington Post to get my daily dose of news and to source stories for my own blog in their “green” section. They posted the story about PETA busting Ringling Bros. in an undercover video beating elephants and tigers. HP normally posts about a range of animal issues, but what I didn’t expect to see was a front page ad for a discount on Ringling Bros. tickets.
C’mon Huffpo. I don’t want to be reminded of that video every time I go to your front page to read Buzzfeed. I know, I know, ad dollars, but seriously? Did you all not see what I saw in that 5 minute video below? Bull hooks being brought down repeatedly on those elephants? Looks like animal cruelty to me.
Please do not support the most horrible show on earth!

Billionaire Tamir Sapir Busted With Dead Exotic Animals
Posted in animal cruelty, animal rights, in the wild, news by thuy | Tags: exotic animals, hunting, tamir sapirA Florida federal judge has fined the owner of a luxury yacht $150,000 for decorating the big boat with allegedly smuggled exotic animal pelts, officials say.
The court also took away the pelts after the registered owner of the $26 million-dollar yacht, Ruzial Ltd., based in the Cayman Islands, pleaded guilty to violating the Endangered Species Act.
Federal court documents show Ruzial’s director is Tamir Sapir, a Russian billionaire and collector of European ivory, The Miami Herald said.
Federal agents, in a routine check of the yacht at at its Port Everglades berth, found the remains of such rarities as zebra, African lion, elephant (hide and tusks), python, jaguar and more.
The ruling by U.S. District Court Judge William Dimitrouleas this week marked the end of a 17-month-long U.S. investigation, officials said.
Hopefully one day my Indecent Proposal moment will come and when it does, I pray that my real life version of Robert Redford does not have disgusting taste in decor on his yacht like Sapir. If I came on board and saw a stuffed animal head on a mantel, I’d have to forego my million dollar deal and jump in a dingy and paddle my ass far, far away.
They should have made him pay Lorena Bobbit the $150,000 to do what she does best and show thus asshole what time it is.

Around The World For Earth Hour

And to all the haters that criticized Earth Hour, please stick a recycled dildo in your piehole.
Of course Earth Hour itself is not going to solve all of our environmental problems. But, it’s not supposed to solve all the problems. It was not an effort to conserve power for one hour. It was meant to be a symbolic event- not only to raise awareness – but to show the “powers that be” that there are hundreds of millions of individuals, and tens of thousands of communities, towns, cities, governments on this Planet Earth that are aware and are demanding that changes start NOW!
Every action taken, large or small, is the opposite of doing nothing.

Ode For Intelligent Optimists
Posted in charitable causes, environment, film/tv/print, food/drink, health, news, sustainability by thuy | Tags: news, ode magazine, positive newsOde is an independent magazine about the people and ideas that are changing the world.
Sometimes it’s difficult to see beyond the war, poverty, exploitation and pollution that the mainstream media use to fill our view of the world. But there is more to life. There are other stories to report. Stories of countless initiatives being launched around the globe by people devoted to justice, respect and equality. Stories that bridge the gap between thinking and doing, between rage and hope, and the painful gap between the rich and poor – and thus build peace and sustainability.
That is the news that Ode promises to deliver. By reading Ode you connect to a network of positive change and inspiration. Ode points the way to knowing better, doing better and feeling better.
Ode publishes ‘the stories that are different from the ones we are brainwashed to believe’ (Arundhati Roy). Ode challenges us and invites us to change. We realise that change starts with information. We can only make a choice to change things for the better when we learn how it can be done. Similarly, we can only change our behaviour when we understand the harmful effects of what we do.
Ode teaches and inspires us, helps us see how every one of us can contribute to a more just and sustainable world.
Ode is printed on recycled paper or you can do your “green” civil duty and receive the digital version. Subscribe here and you’ll get the first issue free and then the one year subscription will be $19.95. They’ll also plant a tree for joining as well as send you a Thich Nhat Hanh meditation CD.

Van Jones Pops His Green Collar For Obama
Posted in boys we heart, environment, news, politickin' by thuy | Tags: environment, green collar economy, green for all, green jobs, jobs, obama, van jonesI was totally doing the YES dance after learning that one of the “boys we heart” has made it into Obama’s camp!
Author and activist Van Jones will be a special adviser for green jobs, enterprise and innovation in the Obama administration.
Nancy Sutley, chairwoman of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, said in a release Monday that Jones will start work next week to help direct the administration’s efforts to create jobs and help the environment. Sutley said Jones will work on “vulnerable communities.”
Jones founded Green for All, a national organization that promises environmentally friendly jobs to help lift people out of poverty. He wrote the New York Times best-seller “The Green Collar Economy.”
Where can I apply to become Van’s “Tool Time” girl?? That position has my name written all over it. I have references.

Pretty In Pink
Posted in in the wild, news by thuy | Tags: albino, bottle neck dolphinThe world’s only pink Bottlenose dolphin which was discovered in an inland lake in Louisiana, USA, has become such an attraction that conservationists have warned tourists to leave it alone.
Charter boat captain Erik Rue, 42, photographed the animal, which is actually an albino, when he began studying it after the mammal first surfaced in Lake Calcasieu, an inland saltwater estuary, north of the Gulf of Mexico in southwestern USA.
Regina Asmutis-Silvia, senior biologist with the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, said: “I have never seen a dolphin coloured in this way in all my career.”
“It is a truly beautiful dolphin but people should be careful, as with any dolphins, to respect it – observe from a distance, limit their time watching, don’t chase or harass it.”

Pet Chimp Killed After Attack
Posted in animal cruelty, news, pets by thuy | Tags: attack, killed, pet chimpA 200-pound chimpanzee kept as a pet and once used in commercials was shot and killed by police after it mauled a woman visiting its owner and later cornered an officer in his cruiser, authorities said. Stamford police Lt. Richard Conklin said the injured woman was hospitalized late Monday in “very serious” condition at Stamford Hospital.
The 15-year-old chimpanzee’s owner and two officers also were hurt. Police said they had no idea why the chimpanzee, named Travis, attacked the woman as she got out of her car to visit the animal’s owner, Sandra Herold. Conklin said Herold wrestled with the animal, then ran inside to call 911.
“She retrieved a large butcher knife and stabbed her longtime pet numerous times in an effort to save her friend, who was really being brutally attacked,” Conklin said.
When will people learn that wild animals cannot be domesticated? It’s like Chris Rock said when one of Siegfried and Roy’s tiger mauled Roy. ‘Everybody’s mad at the tiger. “That tiger went crazy!” That tiger didn’t go crazy…that tiger went TIGER.’

My Google Search Is Hurting The Environment?
Posted in environment, news, tech/gadgets by thuy | Tags: carbon emissions, environment, google searchSo according to some smart Harvard physicist dude, my two google searches above used the same amount of energy as boiling water for a cup of tea. 7 grams of CO2 to be exact.
Normally this might be something that would give me “green” guilt but hey, at least we’re not all polluting the air by driving to the library to do research. Damn, remember those days?
A single cheeseburger has a carbon footprint of around 3,600 grams – over 500 times larger than a Google search. Excuse me while I go Google how many grams my veggie burger generates.
Update: Google has responded
to The Times article, stating that a single search is actually equivalent to a mere 0.2 grams of CO2. The blog post also details some of Google’s efforts to further green technology as well as the energy efficiency of its own data centers.

Another Undercover Video Of Turkey Abuse
Posted in animal cruelty, animal rights, food/drink, health, news by thuyThis will be my first Thanksgiving sans turkey. Thinking about it, I’ve been kinda feeling sorry for myself. Envisioning my plate consisting of just the fixings, I thought, it’s not going to be the same without it. And to all my veggie friends, yes, I know about Tofurky, but ya’ll know I’m still not big on the whole fake meat thing just yet.
After watching this video I busted in on my own pity party and was reminded once again, exactly why I gave up meat in the beginning of the year.
LEWISBURG, W.Va. (AP) _ Global poultry grower Aviagen Inc. said Wednesday it has suspended a supervisor and would investigate a video released by an animal rights group that appears to show horrific abuse of turkeys at the company’s West Virginia farms.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said the video, which includes workers stomping on turkeys’ heads and twisting their necks to kill them, was shot by an undercover investigator who worked on the companies’ farms for more than two months.
Some wannabe smart lady of the National Turkey Federation in Washington, D.C., questioned the timing of PETA’s sting, saying that the turkey industry takes pride in the health and well being of its flocks and this was an isolated event. She said some other stuff but I’m too annoyed to type it all out. Just watch the video.
I want to ask Mrs. Fur-Trim Wearing Smartypants if she’s personally been to ALL of the thousands of farms across the U.S. on a daily basis to confirm her statement. Farm abuse happens all the time and there is no way to regulate it. I don’t care when or how the hell this video was shot. It shows us, the consumers, the truth. Thank you Peta! And back to her isolated comment, does that include the previous account of the Butterball factory farm getting busted for animal abuse too? Isolated my ass.
By all means, enjoy your turkey this year but please at least look into getting an organic, free-range turkey with no antibiotics, hormones or preservatives. You can pre-order them at Whole Foods.
Oh yea, duh *warning* the video has graphic content. You can thank the fine, educated, compassionate, hard working employees of the AVIAGEN farm for that.
If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be a vegetarian. ~Paul McCartney

Cellphone, Computer, Printer, TV, Ipod..
Posted in environment, health, news, reduce/reuse/recycle, tech/gadgets by thuy | Tags: e-waste, pollution, recyclingIf you own any of those things mentioned above or any other type of electronic in your office or household, watch this video. So that means each and every one of you reading this right now should be pressing play.
Electronic waste is no joke. Most of the e-waste from the states is shipped illegally to Asia where labor workers (including women and children) disassemble the pieces for gold and metals. Field sized piles of monitors and scrap pieces are burned daily and the fumes from the chemicals that are released through the process are toxic, polluting the air, soil and eventually getting into the water stream.
Women that work in the field have the highest level of miscarriages and birth defects. Cancer is also a high probability. Much of the work is carried out by children, commonly using only rudimentary tools and with no protective equipment.
I’ve donated appliances to E-waste recycling events with the belief that they were not being shipped overseas and were being recycled safely here in the United States. I feel bamboozled. It’s sad and disturbing that people are capitalizing on the green movement.
Props to the 60 Minutes reporters for fighting back against the Chinese gangsta’s. Read what the accused recycling company (Executive Recycling) had to say about the allegations here.
