Breakin’ It Down: Resin Identification Code
Posted in breakin' it down, reduce/reuse/recycle by thuy | Tags: plastic, recycling, reduce/reuse/recycle, resin identification codeThe SPI resin identification coding system is a set of symbols placed on plastics to identify the polymer type. It was developed by the Society of the Plastics Indsutry (SPI) in 1988, and used internationally.
Most plastics can be recycled, but they have to be separated into their different polymertypes. Because of the difficulty and expense of sorting, collecting, cleaning and reprocessing, at the moment it is only economically viable to recycle PETE and HDPE. Thermosplastics can be remelted, but thermosetting plastics can only be crushed and used as insulation.
The symbols used in the code consist of arrows that cycle clockwise to form a rounded triangle and enclosing a number, often with an acronym representing the plastic below the triangle. When the number is omitted, the symbol is known as the universal Recycling Symbol, indicating generic recyclable materials.
Click here for a breakdown of the 7 types of plastic packaging, what they’re used for and if they’re recyclable.

Tap The Bottle And Twist The Cap

Yoav Kotik is a jewelry designer who refuses to toe the line. He regards the taking of everyday raw materials and their molding into an item of artistic value as a challenge.
Kotik explains: “Gold and diamonds have their own intrinsic value as raw materials. But metal bottle caps, which are basically transparent and common, offer infinite possibilities to design beautiful jewelry.”

Eco-LogicalART is a non-profit sister company to Peter Schulberg’s personal recovered element studio, the DejaDesign Gallery. Both entities share his conviction that beautiful objects surround us and only need to be re-envisioned.
With Eco-LogicalART Schulberg takes his theory of creative recovery to ground braking—or rather ground liberating new heights. The gallery’s fine art line features original art painted on recycled billboard vinyl. Tossed into landfills by the ton weekly, this heavy, ink impregnated material is an environmental nightmare. But ECO-LA takes the indestructible nature of the advertising vinyl and turns it into an asset. In fact the art can even hang on an exterior wall.
At 14 by 48 feet it is estimated that over 250,000 people a day will see the free art month long drive-by “exhibit.” To put that in perspective the famed Getty Museum averages about 4000 visitors daily.
The next billboard drop is Saturday June 13th. Go to the site for more info.
Eco-LogicalART is located at 4829 W. Pico Blvd (just east of La Brea) LA, CA, 90019. 310-525-0676

Fairfax District Goodwill Grand Opening
Posted in los angeles, reduce/reuse/recycle, shopping, tech/gadgets by thuy | Tags: e-waste, fairfax district, goodwill, i love my hood, recycle clothes, reduce/reuse/recycleI’m so excited about the Goodwill that just opened up down the street. I dropped in on the morning of the grand opening and the place was bumping. Balloons, music, families, hipsters and contests.
One thing I noticed was there weren’t any tags on the clothes. Boo-ya! That means not wasting millions of paper price tags as well as the plastic tags they use to connect the price tags to the clothes. They have signs that feature a flat price for the different styles of clothing. Brilliant.
I talked to the manager on my way out and he informed me that they do free e-waste recycling too. You just pull up to their back parking lot and drop it off.
Guess what I did last night? Started going through my stuff to donate and all my dead electronics to recycle. Clearing clutter feels so good.
Once again, I love my hood!
It’s on Beverly/Hayworth. One block west of Fairfax.

Here’s what Iri5 has to say about her work:
- “I am an artist who specializes in using non traditional media… old books, cassettes, playing cards, magazines, credit cards… whatever I can find. It feels great to work with strange, older materials. Things that have a mind of their own. Most everything I use has been thrown away or donated at some point. Green Toys For Tots
Posted in baby/child, environment, reduce/reuse/recycle by thuy | Tags: california, green toys inc., local, recycled milk jugs, reduce/reuse/recycle, toysGreen Toys makes children’s toys out of recycled milk jugs. My first thought was, how could that be? Plastic is bad, especially for kids to stick in their mouths. But apparently it’s reprocessed into high-density polyethylene which is considered to be the safest and cleanest plastic available.
The products are manufactured right here in Cali, which is a plus for us. Less distance for production= less gas emissions.
Also, Green Toys uses less packaging. Big plus in my books. They use recycled corrugated boxes, no plastic, cellophane or zip ties and the box is 100% recyclable. Exactly how all packaging should be.
And of course the most important part- safety. The toys contain no traceable amounts of Phthalates or BPA. They are also designed without any external coatings, eliminating the fear of lead paint.
I know I’m too old for toys but something is making me want that sand play set!

Recycled Skateboards For Furniture
Posted in auto/transportation, board/bikes, home, office, reduce/reuse/recycle by thuy | Tags: contemporary design, eames lounge, nelson bench, noguchi, skate study house, skateboardNewport Beach-based design firm Skate Study House takes its inspiration from contemporary design, California living and most importantly- skate board culture. Works like the Noguchi coffee table, the Nelson bench, the Eames Lounge and more are reproduced with the features of a classic skateboard deck. The “Jet Set Lounge” shown above, is a skateboard-inspired take on the original Le Corbusier Lounge. This version uses neoprene wetsuit material used by surfers and 8 skateboard decks as support.
A GearCrave favorite, the Noguchi coffee table inspired the skate style version by Skate Study House, theTokyo Lounge Table. Where the original employed dark, smooth, geometric wood as its base, the Tokyo table uses a split skateboard deck in the same fashion. The template for this skateboard deck is from the Jim Gray Pro Model, well known in the 80s.
Another all-time GearCrave favorite, the Eames Lounge and Ottoman are reproduced here with skateboard vision. The Godfather Lounge and Ottoman uses 7 walnut laminated skate decks with cushions on the metal frame.
Last, the classic, oft-copied Nelson wall clock has found its own inspiration from the half-pipe. The Skate Study House version, shown here as the Astro Clock, uses flourescent skate wheels and bearings in place of the bright painted wood pieces on the Nelson version.
More info and ordering details are available on the Skate Study House website.

This is what we were greeted with shortly after we landed in Maui. Mother nature at her finest.
It was a hike to get to this red sand beach but once we made it, we were in awe. Not without some LA whining along the way…how much farther? are we almost there yet? shit, I should have worn different shoes…
The crew with “Sally That Girl,” soon after she tied the knot. One down, the rest of us to go- who’s next???
Shout out to our hotel for using recycled toilet paper, recycled paper towels and for supplying our bathroom with natural products. Oh and for mahalo for our lovely beachfront view of heaven on earth.
Thanks to Sally and Gregory for giving the option of donating to their favorite charity, the California Shar-pei rescuse, in lieu of wedding gifts. Learning that several dogs were able to get medical attention and supplies, thanks to the couple and their loved ones, sure does beat receiving a new set of pots or a shiny gift from Tiffany’s in our book.
Congratulations Sally, we love you! Gregory, welcome to the fam. Thank you for having one of the most memorable and beautiful weddings ever.

12 Year Old Wins 10 G’s, Designs For Homeless By Using Trash
Posted in baby/child, environment, home, reduce/reuse/recycle by thuy | Tags: contest, homeless, kid, shelter, talent, trashWhen 12-year-old Max Wallack of Natick heard of WGBH’s Design Squad “Trash to Treasure” design contest, he was ready to give his best shot. The kid stole the show with his “Home Dome” innovation, which is primarily a shelter for the homeless made from plastic, wire and packing peanuts. With his project, he has shown his care for the people in need of shelter and on the other hand, it deals with the problem of increasing landfills. The makeshift dwelling is in the form of a Mongolian yurt and features a built-in bed. For this innovative design, Max won $10,000, a Dell laptop powered by Intel and a trip to Boston to see his design meet realism.

Terracycle
Posted in baby/child, charitable causes, environment, reduce/reuse/recycle by thuy | Tags: reduce/reuse/recycle, terracycleTerracycle creates amazing products from recycled goods. Terracycle began in 2001. Two Princeton University students (now co-founders of Terracycle) Tom Szaky and Jon Beyer, inspired by a worm box, set out to prove that a business could financially succeed while being ecologically and socially responsible. So far, so good.
The Terracycle Company first began the company selling eco-lawn and gardening products. The products were created out of recycled soda bottles, yogurts cups etc. The company continued by producing all natural cleaners in upcycled soda bottles. Naturally, the natural cleaning ingredients have never been tested on animals and are biodegradable.
But, if you think the Terracycle Company is the only ones that benefits financially from this environmental thinking and production, think again. Terracycle provides fundraising opportunities for schools, churches, charities and other organizations. Schools can collect recyclable material Terracylce needs and in return Terracycle pays a percentage for these materials to the school or organization.
Today the Terracycle Company has taken one more step in the green direction. It has created a line of eco-friendly school and office supplies. Believe it or not you can find them at Office Max. Some of the new products consist of: paper made from banana peels, pencil cases made from recycled juice pouches, colored pencils made from used newspapers, notebook made of recycled paper, metal ring and waste wrappers, binders made of recycled papers. Many of these products are made in the U.S. Some of these products, such as the binders, once worn and torn, can be returned to Terracycle to be upcycled again.

Posted in auto/transportation, reduce/reuse/recycle, solar, tech/gadgets by thuy | Tags: alcatraz, hornblower hybrid, solarThe Hornblower Hybrid uses power generated by two ten-foot-tall wind turbines and a photovoltaic solar array covering the awning on the top deck. That power is converted and stored in battery banks that power the navigation tools, lighting and other electronics on board the vessel.
The HH also has Tier 2 marine diesel engines. These cleaner, fuel-efficient engines reduce the amount of diesel fuel used, emissions and overall carbon footprint.
The vessel also contains a number of other environmentally friendly materials. The carpeting contains post consumer recycled materials and is recyclable. The countertops are made from recycled vodka bottles- HOLD UP! Did I just read that correctly? RECYCLED VODKA BOTTLES? Who is the genius man behind this and where has he been all my adult drinking life?
Oh snap, ya’ll are gonna have to go to the site to read what else this modern day Love Boat is all about. You know the drill.. I got some research to do.
Google search gods don’t fail me now.. please let him be single..and tall.

Fairfax District Electronic Waste Recycling
Posted in environment, events, reduce/reuse/recycle, tech/gadgets by thuy | Tags: disposal, electronic wasteOnce again, I love my hood!! There will be a free electronic waste disposal at Fairfax highschool on the corner of Melrose and Fairfax this Saturday. If you can’t make it this weekend, you have two weekends per month during the month of March and April to start gathering up any broken or outdated ipods, cameras, shredders, tv’s, vcr’s and whatever other things you have sitting around collecting dust.
The processing of e-waste in developing countries causes serious health and pollution problems due to lack of containment, as do unprotected landfilling (due to leaching) and incineration. Reuse and recycling are promoted as alternatives to disposal as trash.
And feel free to stop by my place after doing your good deed. I’ll reward you with some organic moonshine and yummy vegan cookies.

Donate Your Jeans For Homeless Teens
Posted in charitable causes, fashion, reduce/reuse/recycle by thuy | Tags: aerostaple, denim, donate, homeless teens, jeansDoSomething.org has teamed up with teen casual wear retailer Aeropostale to round up jeans for homeless teenagers. The campaign, which runs until February 22, is trying to collect 200,000 pairs of jeans this year to beat last year’s record of 125,000.
To donate, bring in any brand of gently worn jeans to any Aeropostale store in the U.S. or Canada. Aeropostale and DoSomething.org will ensure the jeans are donated to one of the 500 youth shelters across North America that have been selected as partners. As an incentive, Aeropostale is offering an additional 25 percent off coupon for those who donate.

130 Tons Of Inauguration Litter
Posted in environment, events, politickin', reduce/reuse/recycle, reusable by thuy | Tags: inauguration, litter, trash, washingtonDamn! I guess that’s expected for the turnout of the inauguration. Unfortunately most of it ended up on the ground because many trash cans were removed for security reasons.
I can understand the usual suspects..fliers, drink/food containers and trash in general but what’s up with the blankets, sleeping bags, foldout chairs, pillows, coolers, gloves, and personal items that were left behind? Lazy ass mother #@*%*’s. You got the shit there, you couldn’t take it back with you? And this is the meaning of a “throw-away society.” Short-lived and disposable. I’m sure there are a lot of shelters or homeless people that could have used that stuff.
Other litter that was left behind came from vendors hawking Obama souvenirs including chairs, tables and bags full of unsold merchandise.
At least some people listened to what Obama said that day and stayed behind to pick up after others.
Just came across this blog called Litter Free Inauguration. Check them out on CBS News.
