Posted in auto/transportation, board/bikes, shopping, wtf by thuy | Tags: , , ,

We love two wheelers and we love shiny gold things but DAYUM- this 24ct gold Hutch Star is craze! Especially in these times. If you happen to have $12,378 saved up for a bike, mosie on over to this site to get your very own.

Whoever gets one of these better get the AVID Microchip Identification System for animals put somewhere up in that mug along with a LoJack system, The Club and about 20 Kryptonite bike locks for it, otherwise we’ll be seeing it in the next Cash4Gold commercial.

Vegan Condoms. Holler.

Posted in animal rights, sexy ting tings, shopping by jen | Tags: , ,

Locali, is a recently opened convenience store in Hollywood stocked with completely animal-free products.

Not only does Locali provide food products from local and sustainable suppliers, they also stock vegan condoms. Yes you heard right… VEGAN CONDOMS.

Normally when we start thinking condoms, we think meat… you know, hot beef injection, sausage, wiener…(but I digress).

Locali stocks the Glyde brand of condoms, which in the past consumers have purchased online via sites such as the Sensual Vegan,as the company is based out of Australia.

Lucky for us veggies on the hunt for animal-friendly sexcapades (ok, that came out wrong), we can now hit up our local convenience store, cop some eco-friendly cock socks and get busy!

Olsen Haus Shoes Rocks My Socks

Posted in animal rights, environment, fashion, shopping by thuy | Tags: , , ,

Been eyeing shoes from Olsen Haus for quite some time. I would like to tell ya’ll what this fine company represents in the shoe game in my own words but they put it down so beautifully on their website, I’m just gonna rip a small tidbit from their philosophy page and save myself some time. Sorry, but after a 14 hour workday my fingers are giving me the side eye and telling me to get my arse to bed.

Business as Usual? More like Business Unusual.

The philosophy of olsenHaus is anchored in the universal truth, respect for all beings, with a dedication to the expression of truth in the material world. We are committed to being 100% animal-free / cruelty-free, producing functional goods, with a high standard of ethical social responsibility in animal rights, human rights, and the environment. Products are made of non-animal materials, in sample rooms and factories that are personally checked for ethical practices & environmental impact.

While many shoes kill, pollute, and destroy lives and ecosystems on their journey to your feet, we recognize these destructive production practices and do not consider them ‘business as usual’. We at Olsenhaus believe these processes can evolve toward a respect for animals, ecosystems and people.

Damn, that was like reading a bedtime story. Off to sleepytime I go so I can dream of kick ass companies that actually care, thriving ecosystems and crystal blue, pollution-free skies. Oh and shoes. Lots of them.

Visit the fine peeps of Olsen Haus here.

Our Clothing Habits Are Hurting The Environment

Posted in Uncategorized, environment, fashion, sexy ting tings, shopping by thuy

The UK group More Than Pretty Nickers wants the fashion industry to take a stand against destruction to the environment for production of clothes. We are starting to see more lines made from organic textiles and designers coming out with eco-friendly lines, but it also comes down to the consumer.

Buy less and choose quality, classic pieces that will last a long time. Seems a bit unrealistic with the birth of fast fashion, trends changing every month and stores that sell disposable clothes such as Forever 21 and H&M.

It’s the big name fashion houses that should be paying attention to this. Stella McCartney is a great example. She refrains from using fur or leather in her line and uses some green practices for her business. Even the shopping bags used in her store are biodegradable. Small things like that can make a big difference in helping our precious environment.

MAC Cosmetics is apparently sympathizing with us beauty junkies during this time of recession and showing their love for the environment at the same time.

In exchange for the return of six pieces of the brand’s primary cosmetics packaging to a MAC store (or by mail), you will receive a free MAC lipstick of your choosing.

Hey, I’m not mad at FREE in exchange for trash. Now that’s a deal I can get down with!

While you’re in there pick up their VIVA GLAM lipstick or lip gloss and help a good cause. Every cent raised through the purchase of VIVA GLAM, goes to the M·A·C AIDS Fund to support the fight against HIV/AIDS. For more info about that program click here.

Green Plastic. Cha-Ching!

Posted in environment, shopping by jen | Tags: , , ,

“Put it on the credit card and worry ’bout it later”. This approach to spending sounds like a reasonable way to deal with this damn recession ( well at least that’s what I tell myself).

That being said, it looks like the credit card companies are giving you an excuse to feel less guilty about putting the latest Marc Jacobs handbag or Christian Louboutin pumps on that lil’ piece of plastic.

Discover launched their biodegradable credit card “in response to greater consumer interest in green products, and they are hoping this will appeal to those interested in living a greener life.”

“The biodegradable Discover Card is another way for environmentally conscious consumers to do their part to help protect our planet.”

“The card itself is made of biodegradable PVC, which breaks down 99% in nine months to five years in soil, water, compost, or whatever microorganisms are present (e.g. landfills or composts). Plus, the card leaves no toxic effect on the environment.”

This seems like a good start, but I would have to agree with the the lovely ladies over at Ladies Lotto,”it can’t possibly be all that good for the environment when it encourages unnecessary consumerism.”

Ponder that for a minute cuz this is one of dem things that make you go “hmmmm.”

Pharrell Goes Bionic

Posted in celeb, environment, shopping by jen | Tags: , ,

Ok… I don’t think Pharrell even needs to be promoting something eco-friendly for me to have mad love for his swagger, but him being on the green tip just adds to his ridiculous sex appeal.

Pharrell has teamed up with the folks over at Bionic Yarn, “a textile firm based in New York dedicated to developing environmentally sustainable fabrics. They engineer, market and manufacture premium yarns and fabrics using fibers comprised of recycled plastic bottles.

The fabrics then can be used to make backpacks, luggage, handbags, clothing items and home furnishings.” Look for Pharrell to be incorporating this eco-friendly material into his clothing labels.

Interesting fact- An average pair of jeans made of the bionic yarn fabric contains seven recycled plastic beverage bottles. If adopted by today’s clothing designers, this type of manufacturing could potentially reduce plastic landfills that are already overcrowded.

Donna Karan Label Goes Fur-Free!!

Posted in animal cruelty, animal rights, celeb, fashion, shopping by thuy | Tags: , , , ,

This is amazing to hear. PETA has tried for years to get Donna Karan amongst other designers to ditch fur. Some successfully and others not. Well days after PETA launched their (now disabled) DonnaKaranBunnyButcher.com site, DK has announced that starting with the fall 2009 line, the fashion house will no longer use fur. Tim Gunn of Project Runway narrated a video that was sent to DK, breaking down the cruel world of fur in the fashion industry.

Thank you to PETA for fighting the fight and to Donna Karan for doing the right thing. Chalk one up for the furry ones thanks to Tim Gunn!

What Would Jesus Buy?

Synopsis: From producer Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me) and director Rob VanAlkemade, “What Would Jesus Buy?” examines the commercialization of Christmas in America while following Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping Gospel Choir on a cross-country mission to save Christmas from the Shopocalypse (the end of humankind from consumerism, over-consumption and the fires of eternal debt.) Stop Shopping mission reminds us that even though we may be “hypnotized and consumerized,” we still have a chance to save ourselves this Christmas.

In an effort to be more eco-conscious H&M is aiming to increase the use of organic cotton by 50% in 2009 as compared to its useage in 2008.

You can always count on H&M for reasonably priced but well made interpretations of current runway trends. It’s my go-to spot if I’m in a clothing dilemma or on a budget.

I’m particularly a fan of the organic cotton line, not only for its environmentally friendly properties, but the cotton is super soft.

The Spring 2009 organic collection will include garments made from recycled materials such as PET bottles and textile remnants, wool from worn-out woolen garments and remnants of fabric, as well as recycled cotton which is recycled from fabric remnants in production.

Clorox = Green?

Posted in shopping by jen | Tags: , , , ,

Clorox is staking its place in the environmentally-friendly product marketplace. Traditionally Clorox has been perceived as the antithesis of all things green, but not for long.

Launched in January 2008, Clorox Green Works eco-friendly cleaning products are on track to sell $40 million worth of its new line in the U.S, surpassing well known green companies such as Method and Seventh Generation.

Not only are Clorox Green Works products endorsed by conservation group Sierra Club, but they are now one of the few companies who have created cleaning products without the cancer-causing chemical 1,4-dioxane.

Eco-conscious companies such as Method and Seventh Generation are still creating products with this deadly ingredient.

Definitely something to consider on your next trip to Target to pick up your cleaning supplies.
