Nixon Solar Powered ‘Volta’

Posted in fashion, solar by thuy | Tags: , , ,

There have been a few solar powered watches but Nixon recently launched its first. Nixon has released ‘Volta’ the first rechargeable solar powered watch.

This solar powered watch sports a semi-transparent dial that allows sunlight through to the solar panel below which charges the watch’s battery. If you are stuck in an office or if you stay indoors most of the time, the watch still works. In fact, any light source is enough to charge this watch, even the florescent lights in your office will suffice.

Here is the long awaited Maria Menounos story I styled for Coco Eco Magazine. There were so many good things about this shoot. Maria was an absolute sweetheart to work with and all of the amazing eco-lines we used fit her like a glove (a stylists dream). We shot in the beautiful, solar powered Marrakesh House and had an electric powered, bright orange Tesla delivered specifically for the shoot.

Happy 1st Anniversary Coco Eco mag!

Check out Cocoecomag.com for the rest of the shots and the inside scoop on TV’s green “it” girl.

This ‘do it yourself kit’ is a great beginners introduction to solar power technology and the end result is your very own little robot. There are 6 different ways to build the 6 in 1 Solar Robot Kit, so you could have a robot dog one minute, or a boat for your bath the next! If either of those don’t do anything for you then why not build your own little plane (moving or still), windmill or solar powered car!

I want one!

Solar Powered G-Spot Vibrator

The SolaVibe is compact, energy efficient and comes with its very own BRIGHT PINK solar panel! One of the commenters suggested leaving it on a windowsill to charge for a few hours- hahaha- holy shit! What if you forgot to put it away? How would you explain that one? Guess you could say it’s to charge your Hello Kitty travel toothbrush or something.

You’ll help save the environment by cutting out batteries, your lady bit will be safe because it’s phthalate-free and you get three uses in one- clitoral, internal vaginal or anal vibes. Sounds like my kinda party! Table for one please.

And the item below isn’t green. It’s white, like my old school first gen iPod. The OhMiBod plugs into any MP3 player and it vibrates to the music…Hello!! Hold up! MAXWELL! Wait, has Johnny Depp ever recorded anything? Google time!

Shape-Shifting Solar iChange Vehicle

Posted in auto/transportation, solar by thuy | Tags: , , , , ,

solarichange

Swiss automaker Rinspeed unveiled another quirky concept at the 2009 Geneva Auto Show: an electric sports car that grows. At the push of a button, the rear end of the iChange pops up to expand from a one-seater to accommodate two additional passengers.

When configured for just one occupant, the driver sits in the center of the car, and the exterior canopy forms an aerodynamic teardrop shape. Expanding the rear for more passengers creates seats on either side behind the driver. In this mode, optimum aerodynamics are sacrificed for increased interior space.

Power for the iChange comes from an electric motor producing 201 horsepower. The sprint to 60 mph comes in just over 4 seconds, and top speed is 137 mph. The car’s lithium-ion batteries are designed with two different configurations for long- and short-distance driving. To maximize range, weight is kept to just over 2,300 pounds.

There are no doors on the iChange. Instead, the entire roof canopy tilts forward using electric power. Solar panels on the roof drive fans that keep the interior comfortable in the summer and also charge the batteries. In place of the traditional car key, the iChange uses an Apple iPhone, which also controls many other vehicle functions. The navigation system also features the ability to calculate the route that requires the least energy.

Hey kids, I always throw up a picture or vid with my posts but something’s broke- it’s either wordpress or my brain- so I’m currently trying to fix that shit. And by “fix that shit” I mean having a noontime cocktail while staring at the screen and wondering why it’s being like that.

Be back soon. For now, please use your imagination- the picture I was going to use was the one of Obama and his fine self walking out of the ocean in Hawaii, dripping wet and..damn, I’ll stop here.

Louis Vuitton: Your Wish Is Their Command

Posted in Logistics, fashion, shopping, solar, tech/gadgets by thuy | Tags: ,

Louis Vuitton is happy to create almost any custom piece, if you’ve got the cash. Last year Karl Lagerfield bought a custom LV trunk to hold his 20 iPods. And now a Chinese gentleman has commissioned something a little more grandiose, and just a little more strange.

The client “wanted to be able to watch television and offer coffee to his friends wherever he traveled in the world, including the remotest desert,” Louis Vuitton’s Patrick-Louis Vuitton recounts. “We agreed to put two solar panels linked to a battery for the flat-screen TV and DVD player, two-way radio, tuner and coffee machine.”

The one-of-a-kind trunk, which is covered in the label’s iconic Damier canvas, took a year to complete and costs tens of thousands of dollars.

One person who probably won’t line up for an exclusive LV trunk is the brand’s creative director, Marc Jacobs. He commented at the recent Met Costume Institute Gala that he doubts trunks will ever make a comeback.

I don’t think there’s anything practical about traveling with a trunk,” he said. “Luxury travel is traveling with a toothbrush. That’s it, end of story. The people who really live luxurious lives don’t need to pack. They’ve got stuff wherever they go.”

I can’t knock anything with a solar cause but I’m totally laughing at the image of homeboy on a deserted island with this trunk. Seriously?

Pimp My Hollywood Sign

Posted in environment, los angeles, solar by thuy

Mike Bonifer (co-founder of Game Changers) has started a grassroots movement to put solar panels around the iconic Hollywood sign and he needs our help.

Mike has already met with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s green team as well as with the Hollywood Sign Trustees on Earth Day. Solar Panel the Hollywood Sign is a community of environmentally aware citizens originally connected via Facebook who advocate turning the world’s most recognizable entertainment landmark into a source of solar energy, making it one of the world’s most powerful symbols of sustainability.

Dildo’s, Solar Panels, Butt Plugs – Oh My!

Posted in art, sexy ting tings, solar, tech/gadgets by thuy | Tags: , ,

Randy Polumbo‘s sculptural bouquets of cast glass dildos and butt plugs seduce the viewer visually, then surprise him/her once the content is clear. They bounce between beauty, absurdity and playfulness and at the same time address environmental issues, as many of these kinetic sculptures are solar powered.

Polumbo’s grotto, a 30 foot installation, has traveled across the US. It featured at the Burning Man Festival in the Black Rock desert of Nevada and at the Bakehouse Art Complex in Miami.

The stunning techno ‘flowers’ are created with illuminated sex toys. They bring to mind sea plants in a corral reef – underwater tubers or anemones. Viewers are drawn into a space where perception is altered in subtle ways. The proverbial doorway to the subconscious opens a little wider in Polumbo’s glowing garden.

There is also irony and humor at play – dildos that you might only think of in the context of a sex store, are no longer defined by their functionality. The eroticism becomes a celebration in a sense.

Escape To Alcatraz On The Hornblower Hybrid

Posted in auto/transportation, reduce/reuse/recycle, solar, tech/gadgets by thuy | Tags: , ,

The Hornblower Hybrid uses power generated by two ten-foot-tall wind turbines and a photovoltaic solar array covering the awning on the top deck. That power is converted and stored in battery banks that power the navigation tools, lighting and other electronics on board the vessel.

The HH also has Tier 2 marine diesel engines. These cleaner, fuel-efficient engines reduce the amount of diesel fuel used, emissions and overall carbon footprint.

The vessel also contains a number of other environmentally friendly materials. The carpeting contains post consumer recycled materials and is recyclable. The countertops are made from recycled vodka bottles- HOLD UP! Did I just read that correctly? RECYCLED VODKA BOTTLES? Who is the genius man behind this and where has he been all my adult drinking life?

Oh snap, ya’ll are gonna have to go to the site to read what else this modern day Love Boat is all about. You know the drill.. I got some research to do.

Google search gods don’t fail me now.. please let him be single..and tall.

Green Hotel California

Posted in Logistics, architecture, environment, solar, sustainability by jen | Tags:

“America’s greenest hotel” has officially arrived and has landed in downtown Yountville, CA. The Bardessono is a 62-room luxury hotel, featuring a 92-seat restaurant and spa.

Bardessono has many environmental and sustainable features, all designed to lessen its impact and beautify the property. A partial list includes:

• 940 solar panels on the buildings’ flat roofs, hidden from view by parapets, that produce 200 KW of power;

• Exterior Venetian blinds, automatically controlled to let the sun and heat in early in the day and out later in the day;

• Dual-pane glass, designed to take advantage of natural light;

• Fluorescent bulbs and light-emitting diodes. Everything electric in the rooms are on motion-detectors that shut them off when a guest leaves. When they return and put their key in the door, the lights, television go back on;

• Dual-flush toilets, low-flow fixtures and water filtration, which takes the place of bottled water;

• Drought-resistant landscaping and underground emitters for outdoor watering;

• Re-use and treatment of gray and black water for irrigation through Yountville’s water system; and

• Organically-sourced linens and cleaning supplies.

Boys We Heart: Van Jones

Posted in boys we heart, environment, home, solar, sustainability by thuy | Tags: , , ,

Van Jones is an activist working to combine solutions to social inequality and environmental destruction. He founded the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, which promotes alternatives to violence and incarceration, in 1996. He has won many honors including a Reebok Human Rights Award and an Ashoka Fellowship, and has served on the boards of many groups, including: the National Apollo Alliance, Social Ventures Network, Rainforest Action Network and Bioneers. The City of Oakland has adopted the Ella Baker Center’s “Green Jobs Corps” proposal, and Van is pushing to create the first-ever Green Enterprise Zone in Oakland.

Excuse me, I have some googling to do..gotta find out if Mr. Jones is married.

*UPDATE: Damnit, he’s married! I was ready to pack my bags and head back to my old stomping grounds in Oakland. Why are all the good ones taken???

Prisons Go Green & I’m On The Hunt For A New Penpal.

Posted in environment, everybody's doing it, reduce/reuse/recycle, solar by thuy | Tags: , ,

As around-the-clock operations, prisons are voracious resource hogs, and administrators are under increasing pressure to reduce waste and conserve energy and water.

To keep costs down, the Indiana Department of Corrections installed water boilers that run on waste wood chips, and built a wind turbine at one prison that generates about 10 kilowatts an hour and saves $2,280 a year.

At Ironwood State Prison in Blythe, Calif., 6,200 solar panels send energy back to the grid, enough to power 4,100 homes a year. The prison was trying to meet an executive order requiring state agencies to reduce energy use by 20 percent by 2015, said a spokeswoman, Lt. Sue Smith.

Organic farming, recycling and solar in the prison system? Ok ma, forget about that nice dentist man I mentioned earlier. As Jody Watley would say: I’M LOOKING FOR A NEW LOVE.

Don’t worry, I won’t go for the Richard Ramirez type. Maybe one with just a misdemeanor offense. Heck, it doesn’t matter, as long as he can build me my dream apartment dweller compost bin or take care of my window plants that keep dying, it will be a match made in heaven.

But for now, inmate # 2478932, where ever you are, please write me soon with all your green credentials. Oh and pretty please decorate my envelope like the one below. Perhaps with a dope chola chic recycle symbol, sad clowns tree’s and graffiti hearts. I love prison art!

And what are you all looking at? Don’t tell me none of you don’t have any friends behind bars! No? Um..well lucky you. Thanks to computers, writing a good old fashion letter in cursive really sucks a big one nowadays.

Anyway, I guess I can go remove myself from inmateconnection.com and writeaprisoner.com. Hey, don’t judge!!!
