LA Will Ban Plastic Bags- FINALLY

Posted in environment, everybody's doing it, reduce/reuse/recycle, reusable, shopping by thuy | Tags: , , , , , ,

The City Council voted to ban plastic bags from stores, beginning July 1, 2010. Shoppers will be given the choice of bringing in their own or pay a 25-cent fee for paper or biodegradable bags. It is estimated that LA consumers use 2.3 billion bags every year. Only an estimated 5% of plastic bags are recycled statewide, according to the city’s Bureau of Sanitation.

The ban was proposed by Councilman Ed Reyes, who called plastic bags “the graffiti of the L.A. River,” which passes through his district. The Los Angeles council also voted to end official city purchases of polystyrene containers (styrofoam) for takeaway food, beginning next year.

Might as well start with getting your practice on now. It took us months to get into the habit of bringing the bags out of our trunks and into the stores with us. Once you’ve done your shopping and get to the cashier, the last thing you want to do, whether it be out of laziness or being in a rush, is leave your cart and walk back out to get them. After a while, it will become second nature, going against the phrase, “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.”
