The shoes are recycled into Nike Grind, a material used to help build sports surfaces and playgrounds. Nike is also working to incorporate more Nike Grind and other environmentally preferred materials into consumer products like shoes and apparel.

Since 1990, they’ve collected more than 21 million pairs of athletic shoes and countless pounds of manufacturing scrap, giving new life to what is viewed as trash.
It’s all part of Nike’s journey toward a closed-loop business -– where waste at different stages of their operations, from their contract factories to transportation and eventually the product at the end of its life — can be recycled into new Nike products.
