True Blue Love

One of the biggest challenges at the beginning of my green path was to figure out where to recycle. I live in an apartment complex near Weho and had never had anything but a dumpster in the alley. I used to save all my cans and bottles and take them to this place off of Santa Monica Blvd, but unfortunately that was all they accepted. What was I supposed to do with paper, cereal boxes, wire hangers, envelopes, styrofoam, shampoo bottles, yogurt containers, etc?

My prayers were answered last month. I’ll never forget the day I walked to the back of my building to throw out the trash and saw the brand new, sparkly blue bins. Upon that vision I saw golden rays of light and heard an orchestra of angels playing harps and flutes. Ok, I made that part up but it was kinda magical like that.

Back in 2007, Los Angeles started to offer multi-family residences free bins for recycling. You can go online here to read more about the program or call 1-800-773-CITY (2489). They make it super easy to order, you can do it as a tenant as long as you have your building or property managers approval to do so. Once the request is put in, you can expect the blue bin within 7-10 days. Look here to see all the things that can be recycled- its not just bottles, plastic and paper. Seriously I’ve cut my trash down in half by recycling. Now it’s your turn, pick up the phone and be the change.
