Walmart To Reduce Plastic Bags
Posted in environment, reusable, shopping by jen | Tags: 11th hour, EDF, leonardo dicaprio, walmartThe last time I was in a Walmart was to pick up a couple copies of the Leonardo Dicaprio narrated DVD, The 11th Hour. Having grown up in Canada, Walmart stores are a dime a dozen, while they are few and far between in Los Angeles.
All that aside, Walmart is looking to eliminate 9 million plastic shopping bags per year by the year 2013. Walmart will team up with the Environmental Defense Fund (EFD) to develop strategies to reduce, reuse and recycle an average of one-third of their plastic bags from 2008 levels. This will result in the elimination of an estimated 290,000 tonnes of carbon emissions and energy consumption equal to 678,000 barrels of oil.
